Glenda J.
Sturgen Gore-Savard
TUPPER
LAKE- Glenda J. Sturgen Gore-Savard, 63, of Tupper Lake,
died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at her home following a
long illness.
She
was born on May 27, 1938, in Moira, the daughter of
Frank and Anna (Atwood) Sturgen.
Glenda
graduated from Moira High in 1958 and from the Parisian
Beauty School in Hackensack, N.J. in 1962.
She
was employed as a beautician at the Rockland State
Hospital.
In
1970 she graduated from Rockland Community College and
continued working at Rockland State Hospital as a
Registered Nurse.
She
moved to Tupper Lake in 1980 and was employed by
Sunmount DDS0 until retiring in 1995.
Glenda
was a member of the Women of the Moose and a High Peaks
Hospice Volunteer.
She
loved the outdoors, enjoyed working with stained glass
and gardening.
She
is survived by one daughter, Catherine Gore of Tupper
Lake; four brothers, Stewart of Moira, Roger of
Ellenburg Ctr., Charles of Tully, Olin of Riverton,
Neb.; three sisters, Gay Disco of Ellenburg Ctr.,
Patricia Baker of Ellenburg Ctr., Judith Savage of
Canastota; and several nieces and nephews.
She
was predeceased by her parents and one brother, Richard
in 1944.
Calling
hours will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, from 6 to 8
p.m. at the Fortune - Keough - Rennell Funeral Home. A
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 11
a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church, with the Rev. Donald
Kramberg celebrant. Burial will follow in the family
plot at Sand Bill cemetery in Dickinson.
Memorial

Oncology unit at the Adirondack Medical Center.

Brady
CHATEAUGAY
— Nora English Brady, 93, formerly of Chateaugay and
currently was making her home with her daughter, Noreen
Brady of Morrisonville, N.Y., died Oct. 5, 2001, at CVPH
Skilled Nursing Facility.
She
was born on April 20, 1908, in Chateaugay, N.Y., the
daughter of William and Nora (Campbell) English.
She
was married to William John Brady on April 26, 1943, in
St. Patrick’s Church in Chateaugay. He predeceased her
on Dec. 8, 1998.
Mrs.
Brady is survived by a daughter, Noreen Brady of
Morrisonville; a son, John Brady of Clinton, N.Y.; and
two grandchildren Joanne E. Brady of Cambridge, Mass.,
and John L. Brady of Allston, Mass.; along with several
nieces and nephews.
Those
who predeceased besides her parents and husband are a
daughter-in-law, Anne Marie Lochner Brady; five
brothers, James, William, Ross, Edward and Gerald
English; and three sisters, Mary English, Sister Irene
English, OSU and Mother Bernadette, OSU.
She
graduated from Chateaugay High School in 1926 and from
the College of New Rochelle in 1930 with a major in
French, taking several courses at Plattsburgh State and
received her master from McGill in Montreal, Que.
Teaching at Chateaugay her whole career with the
subjects French, English, U.S. History and Jr. High
Social Studies, retiring in 1968 after 30 years of
service.
Her
enjoyments included baking, cooking, reading, gardening,
her family and doing the family genealogy.
She
was always interested and kind to her students and young
people.
Mrs.
Brady was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, NYS
Retired Teacher Assoc., St. Patrick’s Altar &
Rosary Society and The Catholic Daughters, Court of St.
Helen’s and Chateaugay Grange.
Calling
hours will be Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, from 3 to 6 p.m. at
the Chateaugay Funeral Home with a vigil service at 5:30
p.m., with Sister Mary Hallahan. Mass of Christian
burial will be on Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. in
St. Patrick’s Church in Chateaugay, with Rev. William
Reamer officiating. Burial will follow in the parish
cemetery.

78, of Factory Street in North Lawrence, N.Y., died
Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital,
in Potsdam, N.Y. She had been a patient there since
October 2.
She
was born in Canton, N.Y., on Sept. 8, 1923, the daughter
of the late Alfred and Hilda (Barker) Cornell.

hours will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday 2 to 4
and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in North
Lawrence. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10

62, of Kent Falls Road in Morrisonville, died Thursday,

He
was born in Plattsburgh on July 30, 1939, the son of Roy
and Beulah (Sumner) Bates.

FORKS — Alice Craig, 87, of route 9 N, died Oct. 4,
2001, at the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown.
She
was born Oct. 29, 1913, in Whallonsburg, the daughter of
Wesley and Elizabeth (Tetro) MacDougal.
She
was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She
is survived by three sons, James and Frances Craig of
Zephyer Hills, Fla., Wayne and MaryAnne Craig of
Amsterdam, N.Y., and Harold and Patricia Craig of
Ballston Lake, N.Y.; one daughter, Alice and Patrick
Santa Maria of AuSable Forks, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren;
several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.
She
is predeceased by her husband, James on Jan. 4, 1993.
She is also predeceased by several sisters and brothers.

the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks,

Jean Russell
CROWN
POINT — Jean Russell, 72, died Wednesday Oct. 3, 2001,
in a fire that consumed her home on Russell Street in
the Town of Crown Point.
Jean
was born at the Russell Farm, where she lived all her
life, on Nov. 5, 1928, the daughter of Frank C. and
Gertrude (Breed) Russell.
She
graduated from the State University of New York at
Cobleskill, with a degree in Agriculture. She was active
in the 4H for many years.
She
is survived by two brothers, Bruce Russell and James
Russell both of Crown Point; two sisters, Lorraine
Laphan of Port Kent and Aileen Laquidara of Balston Spa;
two aunts, Louise Russell and Helen Russell of Silver
Spring, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
There
will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be
conducted Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at the
White Church Cemetery in Crown Point.

Oct. 4, 2001, at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid
where he resided since March of 1998.
He
was born in Lake Placid Nov. 9, 1916, the son of Daniel
and Ruth (Pratt) Frayne.
Visitation
will be held Saturday afternoon at the Clark Funeral
Home in Lake Placid from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. There will be
an American Legion prayer service at 3:20 p.m. followed
by a funeral service at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home,

— Mrs. Sandra L. "Sandy" Rinn, 55, of Wall
Street, died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the
CVPH Medical Center.
She
was born in Ogdensburg, N.Y., on July 29, 1946, the
daughter of the late Ernest and Dorothy (Cameron)
Chisamore.
Sandy
had worked as a teacher assistant at Momot Elementary
for 18 years.
She
enjoyed crafts, crocheting, camping and just spending
time with her family.
She
is survived by her husband of 36 years, Richard F.
"Dick" Rinn of Plattsburgh; one son and
daughter-in-law, Dereck and Toni Rinn of Peru; a
daughter and son-in-law, Lahoma and John Mangum Jr. of
Plattsburgh; her mother-in-law, Blanche Rinn of
Plattsburgh; 10 grandchildren, Dereck II, Ashley,
Dustin, Andrea, Kayla, Mandy, Kristie, Krista, Montana
and Kelsey; one brother, Gary Chisamore of Ottawa,
Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Chisamore.

FORKS — Bernard A. Garrand, 80, died Wednesday, Oct.
3, 2001, at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in
Plattsburgh.
He
was born in Mooers on Feb. 13, 1921, the son of Frank
and Delia (Arquet) Garrand.
He
married Geraldine Morrison on Nov. 7, 1945, at St. Ann’s
Church in Mooers Forks.
Mr.
Garrand was a member of St. Ann’s Church. He was an
avid gardener.
Bernard
was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force. He
served in the Normandy Campaign, Rome-Arno Campaign,
Northern France Campaign, Germany Campaign and the
Southern France Campaign.
Survivors
include his wife, Geraldine of Plattsburgh; three sons
and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Lona Garrand of
Plattsburgh, Michael Garrand of Rouses Point, Steven
Garrand of Plattsburgh and Tammie Garrand of Chazy; six
daughters, Bernadette and Garth Blow of Champlain,
Barbara Garrand of Hemmingford, Rita and James Nichols
of Burlington, Vt., Norma Garrand of Plattsburgh, Brenda
and Gary Luther of Syracuse and Joan Garrand of
Michigan; one brother, Roger and Evelyn Garrand of
Mooers Forks; one sister, Catherine Rabideau of Mooers
Forks; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
He
was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph, Merritt, Leo
and Ernest Garrand ; three sisters, Adele Miller,

daughter of John and Marie (Wodica) Varecka.
She
was a past member of St. Margarets Church in Wilmington
and a present member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Au
Sable Forks.
Mildred
was also a resident in AuSable Acres for several years.
She
is survived by her husband, Herman Walter of Jay; a son
and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Elaine Schwetz of
Williston Park, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara
and Leonard LaFrisco of Queensbury; four grandsons,
Raymond W. Schwetz, William Schwetz, Daniel Schwetz and
Richard Schwetz; three granddaughters, Barbara
LaFrisco-Walker, Geraldine Satterfield and Jeanette
Brintol; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Brintol
and Danielle Schwetz; and a sister-in-law, Gertrude

— Francis G. Barber, 83, of Rt. 22 in the Town of
Putnam, died unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, Oct. 3,
2001.
He
was born in Dresden on May 11, 1918, the son of Glennis
and Aletta (Beebe) Barber.
Mr.
Barber was a lifelong dairy farmer in the Town of
Putnam. Besides his devotion to family and his farm, he
enjoyed observing and caring for animals of all kinds.
He was a member of the Ticonderoga High School
graduating Class of 1938.
He
is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Norma
Nadeau; and one son, Keith F. Barber of Ticonderoga. He
is also survived by two grandsons, Kyle A. Barber and
his wife, Sally of Winston, N.C. and Keith M. Barber of
Raynham, Mass.; one granddaughter, Aletta and her
husband, Graig Sanders of Hingham, Mass.; three
great-grandchildren, Chandra R. Sanders, Michael A.

PARK — Florence Catherine Baker, 95, formerly of
Cornelia Street in Plattsburgh, died peacefully on
Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Schuyler Ridge Residential
Center in Clifton Park, N.Y.
Florence
was born in Plattsburgh on Aug. 23, 1906, the daughter
of Charles P. and Mary E. (Lawliss) Carpenter.
She
married Elric Baker at St. John’s Church in
Plattsburgh on Christmas Day in 1933. Mr. Baker died in
1972.
Florence
was a member of St. John’s Church and a long standing
member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Catholic
Daughters of America.
She
graduated from St. John’s High School in 1914 and
worked as a clerk at The Children's Shop in Plattsburgh,
which was once located at the corner of Cornelia and
Montcalm Streets, for over 30 years.
Florence
was a beloved mother and grandmother and is survived by
three daughters, Gloria and her husband, Elio Bueno of
Westerly, R.I., June and her husband, Dr. Ronald
Armstrong of South Glens Falls and Elizabeth and her
husband, Dr. Milton Olf of Clifton Park; two sons, James
Baker and his wife, Barbara of South Glens Falls and
Robert Baker and his wife, Carol of Brant Lake; ten
loving grandchildren, Steven, Daniel, Anthony and David
Bueno, Monica, Di Iorio, Mark and Michael Armstrong,
Lynn Armstrong Mulderry, Amy Baker Rees and Karen Baker;
eight great-grand- children and one niece, Mary Stewart

— Ruth Margaret Lender, 83, of Tiroga Beach Lane,
passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at the Moses-Ludington
Nursing Home of Ticonderoga.
She
was born in Jersey City, N.J., Oct. 11, 1917, the
daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Barr)
Wachendorf.
Mrs.
Lender has summered in Ticonderoga since the 1920’s
until becoming a permanent resident in 1976. She owned
and operated the Montcalm Liquor Store of Ticonderoga
for the past 11 years.
She
was a member of the Eastern Star in New Jersey and
served as past matron. She served on the vestry of the
Episcopal Church of the Cross of Ticonderoga and was a
member of the New Horizons Literary Club of Ticonderoga.
Survivors
include her husband of 53 years, Walter Joseph Lender;
one son, Charles Walter Lender and his wife, Jane of
Ticonderoga; and one brother, Robert H. Wachendorf and
his wife, Violet of White House Station, N.J.; and
numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends

a long illness.
Mr.
Monkofsky was born in Dubois, Pa., on Aug. 30, 1909, to
Stanley and Maria Monkofsky.
He
was raised in Europe and moved to Brazil as a young man,
where he became a demolition’s expert. He returned to
the United States in the late 1930’s.
He
served during World War II in the U.S. Army, 29th
Infantry Division. He was part of the first wave assault
on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy. He later
fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
After
the war Joe settled in Essex County and was the owner of
the Crown Point Trading Post from 1952 until his
retirement in 1979.
Mr.
Monkofsky was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
post 5802A Ticonderoga, Lodge 1494 order of the Elk and
the Association of Lithuanian Workers.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph Monkofsky Jr., MD,
M.P.H., his daughter-in-law, Andrea Klein Monkofsky and
his grandson, Joseph Charles Monkofsky, all of Syracuse,
N.Y.
He
was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Dame
(Zelinskas) Monkofsky in 1979.
Calling
hours will be Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, from 9 to 11 a.m.
at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry, N.Y. A
memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. from the funeral
home. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery in
Moriah, N.Y.

LaFountain
KEESEVILLE
- Sidney M. "Sid" LaFountain, age 63, a
long-time resident of Jordanville Road, Town of
Columbia, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, in Utica,
N.Y., following an extended illness.
Sid
was born November 4, 1937, in Keeseville, N.Y., son of
Fred and Helen (martin) LaFountain. He attended
Keeseville Schools. On June 6, 1959, Sid was united in
marriage to Shirley L. Barringer in Mohawk. Mrs.
LaFountain passed away January 28, 2001.
Survivors
include his seven children and their spouses, 11
cherished grandchildren, Sid’s brothers and sisters
and their spouses; Norman and Kacky LaFountain, Shirley
and Leo Kusalouis, Sharon and Howard Welch, Nickie and
Anne LaFountain, all of Keeseville, Stanley and June
LaFountain of Ilion, Sherwood "Woody" and Mary
LaFountain of Mohawk, and several extended family
members.
He
was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley, his
parents and his brother, Sherman LaFountain.
Sid’s
funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3,
commencing at 10 a.m. at the Applegate and Day Funeral
Home, 102 West St., Ilion.
Family
and friends are invited to visitation Tuesday from 2 to
4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Applegate and day Funeral Home,
Ilion.

Stephen G.
"Joe" Burdo
Elizabethtown
— Mr. Stephen G. "Joe" Burdo, 53, of Water
Street in Elizabethtown, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001,
at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
He
was born on July 27, 1948, the son of Lindsley L. and
Shirley (Nelson) Burdo - Carter.
Stephen
was a proud veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during the
Vietnam War. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and
golfer. He loved his grandchildren, who lovingly called
him "Papa."
He
is survived by his wife, the former Sally Valentine, of
Elizabethtown; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and
Arin Burdo of Elizabethtown; three daughters, April
Burdo of Elizabethtown, Korin Burdo of Elizabethtown and
Heather Burdo of Elizabethtown; three sisters and two
brothers-in-law, Linda and Jim Heidl of Sandusky, Ohio,
Cynthia Burdo of Plattsburgh and Venus and Gary Wood of
Saranac; his mother of Saranac; five grandchildren,
Katelyn, Paul, Abigail, Keturah and Gavin; and several
nieces and nephews.
The
family will be receiving visitors at the W.M. Marvin and
Son Funeral Home in Elizabethtown on Sunday from 6 to 8
p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001,
at 11 a.m. from St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh.
Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.
Donations
in his memory may be made to the American Lung
Association or to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements
are with the Brown Funeral Home Inc. in Plattsburgh.
James
J. Morgan Jr.,
52, of North Hudson, died Sept. 22, 2001, at home.
He
was born on Sept. 15, 1949, the son of the late James J.
and Eleanor Morgan.
Services
were held on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001. Arrangements were
with the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis, N.Y.
