George I. Haselton
Homestead,
Fla. — George I. Haselton was born in Wilmington, on June 14,
1914, the youngest of five children of Halsey and Gladys (Hardy)
Haselton. He passed away on June 11, 2000, at his home in
Homestead. Fla., following a long illness. His early schooling was
in the one-room schoolhouse next door to home in Haselton and
graduated from AuSable Forks High School. He worked in logging
camps for some time, then joined the U.S. Navy and served six
years in a submarine stationed at Peal Harbor.
In 1939
he married Bernice Cooper--they celebrated their 61st anniversary
on May 13, 2000. He worked at G.E. in Schenectady for several
years. While there he and his wife were instrumental in organizing
a Church of the Nazarene. Their home was a haven for several folks
who went to the Schenectady area in search of employment. In 1945
he returned to Wilmington and owned and operated a garage and
service station until his retirement in 1970. He dispensed not
only gas and oil and used cars but humor, wit and neighborliness.
The garage was the community meeting place where friends and
tourists alike found a warm and friendly welcome.
He served
as supervisor of the town for 12 years and also served as chairman
of the Essex County Board of Supervisors. Many community projects
were completed during his tenure, including extensive expansion of
the town water district. During his retirement years he worked in
building construction with son-in-law, Clif Patnode and later was
mechanic at a plant nursery. He enjoyed tending the many fruit
trees and shrubs at his home in Florida.
His
parents were charter members of the Church of the Nazarene in
Wilmington. He became a member in 1939 and was a faithful member
until death. He served as S.S. teacher, trustee, youth worker and
always supporter and encourager. After retiring to Florida, he
attended the Homestead Church of the Nazarene and the Redland
Church of the Nazarene.
For 37
years he was president of the Wilmington Camp Meeting and attended
and supported for 80 years. He enjoyed telling that his first
visit to camp meeting was at the age of two weeks and was wearing
a long dress. Until his health deteriorated, he served in many
capacities, including chef. He and his wife were famous for
old-fashioned home cooked meals; one specialty being blueberry
pancakes. He supported with time, talent and funds all his life
and leaves a legacy of devotion and commitment.
He had
many interests: cars of all types and vintage, hunting and
fishing, boating and music. He was adept with several instruments
including piano, trumpet, bariton and violin. He organized and
directed a church band and up until his last days played and sang
favorite tunes and hymns especially for grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He will long be remembered as a devoted and
caring husband, father and friend. His sense of humor was unique
and he always had a story to tell. His Christian influence will
live on in all those who remember him.
He was
lovingly cared for at his home during several years of declining
health. Survivors include his wife, Bernice; his children, Helen
(and husband Clif) Patnode of Homestead and Halsey (and wife Rose)
of Knoxville, Tenn; a sister, Martha Savage of Homestead;
grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews,
cousins and countless friends.
Services
and committal were held at Palms Woodlawn in Naranja, Fla., on
June 14 (his 86th birthday) with Rev. Deane Hardy (cousin)
officiating, assisted by Rev. Darin Pound and Rev. William
Chambers Jr. The service was a time of celebration of his life. It
included many of George’s favorite songs and stories.
Any who
wish can send a memorial to Wilmington Camp Meeting Assn., c/o
Mrs. Dana Peck, HC 2, Box 135, Wilmington, NY 12997.
