Albert A. "Sonny" McRoberts
Dover Plains — Albert A. "Sonny" McRoberts, 65, of
Dover Plains, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Vassar Brothers
Hospital in Poughkeepsie. He was born Dec. 11, 1934 in Dannemora, the
son of Albert and Thelma (Watson) McRoberts.
He was a lontime resident of Dover Plains and worked for 35 years
for Local 201 Plumber & Steam Fitters Union in Hyde Park, retiring
in 1995. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He enjoyed hunting, golf and training beagles and was a member of
the Poughkeepsie Elks Club, the Harlem Valley Golf Club and the
Millbrook Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He married Barbara Tedford on Oct. 12. 1955; she died in February,
1986.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Terri
McRoberts of Wassaic; a daughter, Donna McRoberts of Amenia; one
brother, Russell McRoberts and family of Dover Plains; a companion,
Connie Davis of Dover Plains; three grandchildren, Scottie, Melissa
and Jennifer; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, Jean Hart and
Joan Tabor.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at
the Hufcut Funeral Home, Main Street, Dover Plains, N.Y. A funeral
service will be held on Monday, March 13, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the
funeral home. Interment will be at the Valley View Cemetery in Dover
Plains.

Agnes Ann LaFontaine Frennier
Plattsburgh — Agnes Ann LaFontaine Frennier, 66, of Joyce Court,
died Thursday March 9, 2000, at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in
Burlington, Vt.
She was born on June 5, 1933, in Plattsburgh, the daughter of
George Joseph LaFontaine and Ruth Bernice (Asselin) Ashline of
Champlain.
Agnes was a member of St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. She
graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Champlain in 1950 and from the
Champlain Valley Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. She obtained her
bachelor of science in school nurse-teacher education in 1956 and an
masters degree in the same major in 1960 from Plattsburgh State. She
was also certified to teach health education. Agnes worked as an
registered nurse in the local hospitals for three years and as a
school nurse-teacher and health educator from 1956 in the Plattsburgh
City School District until she retired in 1976.
She was a lifetime member of the State University Alumni
Association, a member of the New York State United Teachers and
American Federation of Teachers and a lifetime member of the New York
State Retired Teachers Association She was also a member of the
Champlain Valley Council of Retirees, the New York State School
Nurse-Teacher Organization, the CVPH Nurses Alumni Association, the
Plattsburgh Aero Club, a charter member of the Northern Sams Chapter
50 of the Good Sam Club International and a member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Agnes was a former member of the Civil Air
Patrol.
Agnes is survived by her husband, Lt. Col. Clarence Merritt
Frennier, USAF, retired after over 45 years; two daughters and
sons-in-law and grandchildren, Beth Ann and Steven Joseph Morrissey of
Vergennes, Vt and Mary Margaret and Philippe Jean-Luc Santi Furlan and
their children, Stephanie Elisa-Marie Furlan and Nicolas Jean-Philippe
Furlan of Nepean, Ontario; three brothers and four sisters-in-law,
Carl and Jeannine LaFontaine of Champlain, Reginald and Elizabeth
LaFontaine of Champlain, Michael and Patricia LaFontaine of Champlain
and Maurade LaFontaine of Hicksville; two sisters and brothers-in-law,
Mary and Jack Martens of Salem, Ore., Beatrice LaFontaine of San
Diego, Calif. and Fred Grace of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and several nieces
and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Ernest and a sister Pearl.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at
the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian
burial will be celebrated on Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Peter's Church in
Plattsburgh. Burial will be in St. Edmund's Cemetery in the spring.

Frennier Memorial Scholarship for Nursing and Health Education.
Ernest D. Barcomb
Mooers Forks — Ernest D. Barcomb, 76, died Thursday, March 9,
2000, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
He was born in Mooers Forks on Dec. 12, 1923, the son of Delor and
Yvonne (Poissant) Barcomb.
He was a dairy farmer for over 40 years, retiring in 1986. He was a
member of St. Ann's Church in Mooers Forks.
He is survived by his wife, the former Regina Roberts of Mooers
Forks; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Martine Barcomb of Mooers
Forks; five daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Stephen Argilan of
Altona, Alice and Bill Wrye of Mooers Forks, Karen and Paul Poissant
of Champlain and Janet and Murray Weir of Mooers Forks; a brother and
sister-in law, Casper and Doris Barcomb of Altona; a sister, Clarice
Raymond of Champlain; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Betty Barcomb; and two brothers, Leo and Roland
Barcomb, died before him.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the
E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Mooers. A Mass of Christian burial will
be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Ann's Church in Mooers
Forks. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or
the Mooers Rescue Squad.
Carrie E. Rock
Plattsburgh — Carrie E. Rock, 82, of Plattsburgh, died Thursday,
March 9, 2000, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
She was born in Peru, Oct. 20, 1917, the daughter of James and
Ethel (Defoe) Annis.
She was a home healthcare aid for several area people. She enjoyed
playing bingo and sewing.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Jr. and Rita
Rock and Clayton Rock Sr. and Beverly Rock, all of Peru; three
brothers and two sisters-in-law, Clayton and Jean Annis of
Schenectady, Roy and Gloria Annis of Virginia Beach and James Annis
and his companion, Margaret, of Peru; two sisters and one
brother-in-law, Ella Parent of Florida and Evangeline and Harold Macy
of Peru; one brother-in-law, Hanford Blanchard of Peru; seven
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Rock Sr. in 1981; two
brothers, Raymond and Franklin Aimis; and one sister, Ethel Bert
Blanchard.
There will be no public calling hours. A memorial Mass will be
celebrated Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at 1 p.m. at St. Augustine's
Church in Peru. Burial will be in the spring in the parish cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to a fund in her memory.

Joseph Herbert Gray
CANFIELD — Joseph Herbert Gray, 81, who was known as
"Bert," was born Sept. 2,1918, in Pittsburgh, a son of
Joseph H. and Kathryn Preston Gray. He lived in this area for several
years, moved to River Hills, S.C., and then returned here four years
ago.
He was a graduate of Langley High School, Pittsburgh, and had
attended Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. He was
assistant to the president of Harbison-Walker Refractories, a division
of Dresser Industries and retired in 1982, after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the church, Lions Club International, Dormont
Lodge F&A.M. in Pittsburgh, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He served
in the Army during World War II.
Besides his wife, the former Bettie Arnold, whom he married Dec.
20, 1940, he leaves two daughters, Sharon Berlin of Poland and
Jennifer Booth of Plattsburgh; three grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. A son, Richard P. and a brother, William. T. are
deceased.
Friends may call for one hour before services in the church.
Memorial services will be at 11 p.m. Monday in Canfield Presbyterian
Church.

Elizabeth L. (Betty) Gauthier
Black Brook— Elizabeth L. ( Betty) Gauthier, 74, of the Silver
Lake Rd. , Black Brook, died Thursday, March 9, at the CVPH Medical
Center, Plattsburgh. She was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Morrisonville,
the daughter of Joseph and Irene "Marcoux" Liberty Sr.
Betty was a member of St. Matthew’s Church in Black Brook serving
as Eucharistic Minister and also belonged to a small parish prayer
group. She also belonged to the former Altar Rosary Society. She and
her family designed and stitched the Pall used at all funerals at St.
Matthew’s Church. She also was her husband’s partner running
Gauthiers Store in Black Brook. She was an avid baker and enjoyed
being with her family.
Survived by her husband, Haven Gauthier of Black Brook, who she
married March 2, 1957. They just celebrated their 43rd anniversary. A
daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Bob Lintner of Vermontville; three
sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Gauthier of Portland Ore, Thomas
Gauthier of San Diego, Calif., Marc and Lisa Gauthier of Greensboro,
N.C.; A brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Phyllis Liberty of
Saranac. Her mother and father predeceased her.
Calling hours will be Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer
Sprague Funeral Home with a Prayer Vigil Service at 8:30 p.m. A
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s
Church and burial will be at a later date in Holy Name Cemetery.

the Perpetual Care Fund for Holy Name or St Matthew’s Cemeteries.
William H. Hathaway
JAY— William H. Hathaway JR., 63, of Route 9n died Thursday,
March 9, 2000, at the CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh as the result
of an Mo-ped- car accident. He was born April 24, 1936, in Jay, the
son of William and Elizabeth "Thwaits" Hathaway Sr.
Bud was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the U.S.
Marine Corps from Sept. 10, 1953 to Sept. 9, 1956. He was a
correctional officer at the Clinton Correctional Facility, Dannemora
for 25 years retiring in 1985. Bud was also an avid sportsman.
He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in- law, Billie and
Thomas Yando of Jay, Bonnie Hathaway of Md, and Torrie and Todd DeMar
of Watertown; a son, William D. Hathaway III of Lake Placid; a
step-daughter and a step-son-in-law, Gail and Richard Shehorn of
Delaware; seven grandchildren and a dear friend Ramona Thwaits. His
wife, Lorrie Hathaway died June 17, 1996, and his brother, Ashley
Hathaway died August 1999.
There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Family and
friends will gather Sunday at 2 p.m. at his residence in Jay.

Aldea S. Henderson, 91, of Fort Covington, died March 9, 2000,
at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone. She was born in Ste. Agnes
de Dundee, Quebec, on June 16, 2000, the daughter of the late Louis
and Delima (Latour) Hainault.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 and 7 to 9 p.m. at
the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home in Fort Covington. A
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at

Timothy J. Gould, 42 , of Margaret Street died Thursday, March
2, 2000. at his home. He was born on March 16, 1957, son of the late
John T. and Barbara (Farlinger) Gould.

HELEN ALYS McKEE, 74, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., died March 10,
2000, at Cape Canaveral Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles

Hazel Oliver Beaudreau
PLATTSBURGH
— Hazel Oliver Beaudreau, 76, of Oak Street, died Thursday, March 9,
2000, at her home. She was born in Indian Lake, on June 30, 1923, the
daughter of Charles and Ruby (Benton) LaVergne.
Hazel was a
long time member of the Church of Nazarene, serving as Missionary
Society President, Sunday School Teacher and Church Board Member. Mrs.
Beaudreau operated Oliver's Service Station with her first husband,
Harry Oliver for 20 years. Harry died July 31, 1966. She married her
second husband, Wilbert Beaudreau in Plattsburgh in 1969. Hazel then
worked for 21 years at J.C. Penney Company retiring as Personnel
Supervisor in 1985. Hazel and Wilbert spent the last 14 winters in
Orange City, Fla. Her interests include ceramics, crocheting and
reading.
Survivors
include her husband, Wilbert Beaudreau of Plattsburgh; two sons, Harry
Oliver and his wife Darlene of Plattsburgh and Stanley Oliver and his
wife Linda of Plattsburgh; one step-daughter, Mrs. Roger (Maureen)
Guitar of Chateaugay, Quebec; two brothers, Thomas LaVergne and Martha
of Indian Lake and Robert LaVergne and Donna of Johnsburg; two
sisters, Mrs. Rudolph (Muriel) Goodspeed of North Creek, and Mrs.
William (Dorothy) Durkin of North Creek; one sister-in-law, Mona
LaVergne of Plattsburgh; one brother-in-law, George Oliver of Altona;
four grandchildren, Paul Oliver, Lorie Oliver, Joseph Guitard and
Nancy Fisher and several nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by
one son, Paul D. Oliver, two brothers, Louis LaVergne and Donald
LaVergne and two sisters, Virginia Lewis and Christine LaVergne.

Raymond C. Rabideau
Mooers Forks
— Raymond C. Rabideau, 80, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the CVPH
Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
He was born
in Mooers Forks on December 7, 1919, the son of Alexander and Lelah
(Poissant) Rabideau.
Mr. Rabideau
was a dairy farmer all of his life and was a milk hauler for 11 years.
He received the Dairy of Distinction Award and served on a local dairy
committee board. He played the fiddle with the Allen Ryan Band for
many years at many different celebrations. He was a country music
lover and enjoyed his four wheeler and spending time with his
grandchildren. He was a member of St. Ann's Church in Mooers Forks.
He is
survived by his wife, the former Clara LaValley whom he married in
1953; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven C. and Sharon Rabideau of
Rutland, Vt; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy (Rabideau) and
Thomas Garrand of Mooers Forks, Carol Rabideau of Mooers Forks,
Caroline (Rabideau) and David Cayea of Mooers Forks; four brothers and
three sisters-in-law, Eugene Rabideau of Rouses Point, Rene and
Marcella Rabideau of Mooers, Gilbert and Shirley Rabideau of Mooers
Forks, Donald and Norma Rabideau of Mooers; three sisters and two
brothers-in- law, Irene Premo of Troy, CeCile and Donald LaPierre of
Mooers, Beatrice and Emile Tetreault of Syracuse; a sister-in-law,
Theresa Rabideau of Champlain; five grandchildren, Dana M. Garrand,

Marie V. LaValley
PLATTSBURGH
— Marie V. LaValley, 84, of 6681 Route 22 died Thursday, March 9,
2000, at the CVPH Medical Center. Marie was born in Mooers Forks on
October 14, 1915, the daughter of Benjamin Nephew, Sr. and Flanda
Peetes .
She married
Amos J. LaValley on October 7, 1940, at St. Joseph's Church in West
Chazy. Amos died May 3, 1999. Mrs. LaValley was a cafeteria worker at
the Clinton County Nursing Home in East Beekmantown and then in the
Beekmantown Central District for many years until retiring in 1978.
She also helped her husband run the family farm.
Survivors
include three sons, Richard LaValley and his wife, Agnes and Ernest
LaValley and his wife, Catherine both of Beekmantown and Donald
LaValley and his wife, Huguette of Mt. Juliet, Tenn; one brother,
Robert Nephew and his wife, Helena of W. Chazy; five sisters, Nellie
Burdo, Margaret LaValley and Bertha Trombley all of Plattsburgh, Mrs.
Harold (Irene) McComb and Mrs. Robert (Theresa) LaRochelle both of
Mooers Forks; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 10
greatgrandchildren; 16 stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews. Three brothers, Arthur Nephew, Alex Nephew and Benjamin
Nephew, Jr. and two sisters, Rita Miller, and Rose Garrand all died
earlier.

Funeral Home. A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of
Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St.

SMITH, 72, of State Route 37, Westville, died March 9, 2000, at
the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone.
He was born
in Cobleskill on Sept. 24, 1927, the son of the late Henry and Esther
(Chapman) Smith.

2000, at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown. She was born in
Witherbee, June 11, 1909, daughter of the late William and Mary
(Ambrucio) Versocki. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of
Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday March 14, 2000, at 11 a.m.
at The Church of all Saints in Mineville with Rev. Michael Toth
officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Moriah in

Edmund (Chief) Morette
Ticonderoga
— Edmund (Chief) Morette, 86, of the Portage, a long time fish and
wildlife activist, passed away Monday, March 6, 2000, at the
Moses-Ludington Hospital of Ticonderoga.
Born in
Ticonderoga on Dec. 30, 1913, he was the son of the late John and Anna
(DiFebbo) Morette, both immigrants from Italy.
Mr. Morette
was a life-long resident of Ticonderoga. He was a graduate of
Ticonderoga High School, Class of 1932. He was a veteran of the U. S.
Army, having served during World War II as a corporal in the Army Tank
Corps. During the Depression, he served in the Civilian Conservation
Corp in Idaho.
Mr. Morette
held numerous positions in New York State conservation and civic
organizations. Known to most of us as "Undy", he played a
strong role in regional conservation activities and politics for over
50 years.
For three
years, beginning in 1966, Mr. Morette was president of the New York
State Conservation Council, a statewide conservation and environmental
organization composed of 350,000 members. He later served as Chairman
of the Board of Directors from 1971-1975 and again in 1978; he was the
Region Five director from 1969 until 1991. The counties of Essex,
Clinton, Franklin, Hamilton, Saratoga, Warren and Washington comprise
Region Five. Mr. Morette was also vice-president of the Council from
1962 to his election as president in 1966. In 1968, he was named New
York State Conservationist of the Year. Prior to his roles with the
Council, Mr. Morette headed the local Ticonderoga Fish and Game Club
and also the Essex County organization as well.
He served on
the New York State Fish and Wildlife Management Board from 1977 until
his death. Initially, he served as the Conservation Council
representative and from 1979 on, he served as the sportsmen's delegate
from Region Five, representing the Adirondacks and North Country
counties.
In addition
to his activities with the Conservation Council, Mr. Morette played a
number of additional environmental and conservation roles. He was a
member of the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics environmental
committee. Until 1999, and for over 20 years, Mr. Morette was
president of the Adirondack Conservation Council, a coalition of area
conservation and wildlife organizations. Mr. Morette also served as
liaison to the Quebec Wildlife Federation, which named him a lifetime
member.
In addition,
Mr. Morette co-chaired Ticonderoga's Bicentennial celebration in 1964
and was chairman emeritus of Ticonderoga's 400th Celebration
Champlain, to be held in 2009. He was an active member and leader of a
number of fraternal organizations, including the American Legion, the
Knights of Columbus and the Elks.
From 1946
until his retirement in 1974, Mr. Morette was a dairy and food
inspector for the New York State Department of Agriculture and
Markets. From 1976, until a disabling stroke in November of 1999, Mr.
Morette managed the activities of Green Thumb Environmental
Beautification in Essex County. Green Thumb is an organization that
employs senior citizens to maintain parks, roadside amenities and
recreation sites.
Mr. Morette
married Marion Elizabeth Forcier in 1939. She died in 1995. He was
also predeceased by two brothers, Edward Morette and Joseph J.
Morette.
He is
survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Ron Schubin of
Colonie; two sons and daughters-in-law, John E. and Kay Morette of
Melbourne, Fla. and Bob and Jeanne Morette of Glencoe, Ill.; one
brother, Louis J. Morette of Ticonderoga; and two sisters, Ida Morette
and Antoinette O'Bryan, both of Ticonderoga. He is also survived by
eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and
nephews; and a dear friend, Stephanie Dechame.
Relatives and
friends may call Friday from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wilcox
& Regan Funeral Home, 33 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. The
Ticonderoga Elks will conduct a Lodge of Sorrow at 8 p.m. Friday
evening at the funeral home. The Knights of Columbus will gather for a
Catholic Wake Service at 8:30 p.m.
A funeral
Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's
Catholic Church of Ticonderoga. The Rev. William G. Muench, pastor,
will officiate.
The Rite of
Committal will take place at the family plot of St. Mary's Parish
Cemetery of Ticonderoga in the spring.

Daytona
Beach, Fla. — Rudolph C. Poselovic, of Daytona Beach, Fla. died
March 3, 2000, at Memorial Hospital Peninsula, Ormond Beach, Fla.
He was born
in Newburg on Jan. 11, 1916.
A former
industrial engineer for General Electric Company, he started working
at G.E. in Schenectady and later was transferred to Daytona Beach
Fla., Oklahoma City, Okla. and Erie Pa., assigned to work on numerous
NASA (Apollo Support Department), National Defense (Minuteman Missile
System), and the Amtrak Transportation System contracts. He retired in
1978 after 43 years of service, and returned to the Daytona Beach
area.
He was an
avid bowler and golfer, winning many amateur tournaments in both
sports for the Scotia and General Electric leagues. He truly loved the
game of golf, teaching and encouraging all that knew him to take up
this wonderful sport. He was the "golf pro" and President of
the Board in 1963 at the Stadium Golf and Country Club in Schenectady.
He was an
associate member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, a
former member of the Elks Clubs in Oklahoma City and Erie, Pa. and
also a former member of the Pelican Bay Country Club, Daytona Beach,
Fla.
He is
survived by his wife, Betty (Lacy) Poselovic of Daytona Beach; a son,
Rudolph C. (Chuck) Poselovic Jr. of Oklahoma City, Okla.; five
daughters, Mrs. Walter (Linda) Kruszewski, Erie, Pa., Mrs. Chris
(Nikki) Hawkins, Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Chris (Carole) Girman,
Ormond Beach, Fla., Mrs. Sylvia Poggi, Scotia and Mrs. Judy Longo,
Rotterdam; a sister, Mrs. Tom (Mary) Huey, Tampa, Fla.; 14
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, John and Aplonia; his brother, John;
a sister, Ann; and an infant son.
A private
service was held on Monday, March 6, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Epiphany
Catholic Church, Port Orange, Fla.

She was born

(Donaldson) McLean.
Survivors
include two daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and Fred Gonyea,
Cynthia Chase and Rupert Chase, all of Plattsburgh; one son, Reginald
McLean of Plattsburgh; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Elsie and
Lloyd McKee, and Etta Decelle, all of Plattsburgh; several
grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was
predeceased by her first husband, Raymond McLean; her second husband;
and two sons, Charles Raymond McLean and Francis McLean.

Bernice Beardsley Van Der Volgen, 89, of Barthol Street, Colonie, died
Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.
Born in
Willsboro, she had lived on Barthol Street for 58 years. Mrs. Van Der
Volgen was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Colonie and
an avid bingo player. She was the wife of the late Howard A. Van Der
Volgen.
Survivors
include three daughters, Joyce Van Der Volgen Maynard of Guilderland,
Mrs. George (Elizabeth) Fitzgerald of Colonie and Mrs. Anthony (Carol)
Ridolfo of Schenectady; a brother, Rudolph G. Beardsley of Toms River,
N.J.; a sister, Lida Sloper Martin of Willsboro; ten grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Mrs. Penders
was born Dec. 19, 1904, in Cohoes, the daughter of George T. and
Catherine (Horan) Munckton.
She was a
communicant of St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls and a member of the
Court McDermott 188 Catholic Daughters of America.
Mrs. Penders
enjoyed reading and sewing.
Survivors
include two sons, William J. Penders of Plattsburgh and James Penders
of Glens Falls; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Penders of Colorado, Laurie
Pellerin of Plattsburgh, Thomas Penders of Queensbury, Christopher
Penders of Rochester, Caroline Keating of Glens Falls and Brian
Penders of Waterbury, Vt.; and six great-grandchildren.
She was
predeceased by her husband, William J. Penders, who died Feb. 19,
1992; and five sisters, Margaret Jones, Ella Munckton, Catherine
Munckton, Grace Farrar and Laura Hayes.

11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls.

Harold W. Gillings III
Schroon Lake
— Harold W. Gillings III, 61, of Nokomis, Fla. and Schroon Lake,
died Sunday, March 5, 2000.
He was born
June 4, 1938, in Schroon Lake, son of Harold Wilbur Jr. and Ruth P.
Gillings and spent most of his life in that area.
Mr. Gillings
graduated from State University of New York at Oswego and earned his
masters degree in industrial arts and was a teacher for many years at
Schroon Lake Central School, where he taught industrial arts and was
very active in extracurricular activities. He was also owner/operator
of the Elm Tree Motel in Schroon Lake.
In addition
to his years of teaching service, Mr. Gillings was a member of the
Schroon Lake Lions Club for more than 25 years. He had held the
position of president and director of the Schroon Lake Chamber of
Commerce and was a past president of the Schroon Lake Teacher’s
Association. He had been a commissioner on the Schroon Lake Board of
Fire Commissioners, had served as the fire chief and was a major
influence in the planning and building of their new fire house. He was
a member of the Schroon Lake Community Church and past president of
the Schroon Lake Snowmobile Club. He was Citizen of the Year in 1992
for the town of Schroon Lake.
Survivors
include his wife, Gwendolyn Gillings of Nokomis, Fla. and Schroon
Lake; a daughter, Karen Christine Harvey of Greenwich; a son, Andrew
Floyd Gillings of Schroon Lake; a grandson, J. Richmond Harvey of
Greenwich; a niece, Melanie L. Hirsch; and grandnieces Emily and Katie
Hirsch.
A memorial
service will be held at 4 p.m. on March 9, 2000, at the Farley Funeral

She was born
in Saranac Lake on Sept. 24, 1909, daughter of Howard and Katherine
(Keese) Melius.
Alice was a
1936 graduate of the Champlain Valley School of Nursing. She later
served that institution as an instructor. She was the head nurse of
the Emergency Room at Champlain Valley Hospital and later at CVPH
Medical Center. Alice was a member of the Champlain Valley School of
Nursing Alumni and was a member of St. John's parish in Plattsburgh.
She was a member of the Monday Bridge Club.
Alice is
survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Sue Ellen Coste of
Plattsburgh; a daughter, Caroline Sener of Mountain Home, Idaho; a
sister, Evelyn Bickford of Plattsburgh; four grandchildren, Jay,
Debbie, Kris and Jackie; a great-grandson, Brad; and several nieces
and nephews.
Her husbands,
Francis Henry Coste and J.F. Bothwell Schurr and a brother, Myron
Melius, died previously.

She had made
her home in West Chazy until moving to Plattsburgh in 1986. Lyn had

1973, when she became disabled. She enjoyed playing bingo, bowling and
was an avid reader.
She is
survived by her husband, whom she married Aug. 25, 1945, Melvin E.
"Mel" Bennett Sr. of Plattsburgh; eight children and their
spouses, Helen and Robert Bodnar of Plattsburgh, Lynne and James Lowe
of Williamsport, Pa., Melvin and Carol Bennett of Cedar Hills, Texas,
Janet and John Stahl of Milton, Pa., Janice and Thomas Butler of
Beekmantown, Gail and Donald Soldato of Eagle River, Alaska, Guy and
Cathy Bennett of Jersey Shore, Pa. and Warren and Kathy Bennett of

New Milford,
Conn. — Marshall E. Miner, 56, of New Milford, Conn. died Monday,
March 6, 2000, at New Milford Hospital.
Mr. Miner was
born in Malone on Nov. 24, 1943, a son of Lillian Miner of Chateaugay
and the late William Miner.
He was raised
in New York and was a graduate of Chateaugay High School. In 1963, he
moved to Connecticut and worked at the Kimberly-Stevens Corporation
until the company closed. Mr. Miner worked as a custodian for the New
Milford Board of Education from 1986 until the time of his death. He
was a member of the Local Teamsters Union 677.
Besides his
mother, Mr. Miner is survived by his children, Thomas Miner of
Gaylordsville, Conn., Michael Miner of Thomaston, Conn., Jason Miner
and Pamela Murphy, both of New Milford, Conn.; two brothers, Lloyd
Miner of New Milford, Conn. and Gerard Miner of Ellenburg Depot; a
sister, Josephine M. Langevin of Chazy; and six grandchildren. He is
also survived by his former wife, Joyce A. Miner.
The family

Elizabeth Ostrander Eells

— Elizabeth Ostrander Eells, 94, of Plattsburgh, died Monday, March
6, 2000, at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.
She was born
in Morrisonville on Jan. 17, 1906, daughter of Leslie and Delia
(Sullivan) Ostrander.
Elizabeth was
a 1924 graduate of Port Henry High School. Following graduation, she
was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers at the Plattsburgh Army
Post and then the Department of Motor Vehicles. On Nov. 20, 1929, she
married Curtis H. Eells.
In 1946, she
and her husband founded Eells Motors, a Nash dealership that
subsequently became Rambler and then American Motors. In 1970, the
Eells took on the Datsun franchise. Both Mr. and Mrs. Eells retired in
1978.
Mrs. Eells is
survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Rose Eells of
Albany; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Clement Jackson of
Plattsburgh; a son-in-law, Albert Otto of Fountain Valley, Calif.; six
grandchildren, John Eells, Peter Eells, Susan Moore, Christopher
Jackson, Elizabeth Stoffel and Richard Otto; ten great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Eells
was predeceased by her husband of fifty-six years in 1985; a daughter,
Elizabeth Otto in 1978; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Jackson, in
1974.
A Mass of
Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St.
John's Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be later in the year in Old
Peru Cemetery in Peru.

employed for many years as a quality control representative for the
U.S. Department of Defense in Stratford, Conn.

His wife,
Rose Mary (Dubinskas) Prunier, died earlier. A brother, Henry Prunier

She married
Nelson Savage in 1935. He died October 25, 1982.
Clara was a
communicant of St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville, and an
associate member of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis. She enjoyed
sewing.
She is
survived by three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Ilene and
Walter Jaje of Buffalo, Ethel and Sherman Martin of Peasleeville and
Marjorie Savage of Black Brook; and several nieces and nephews.
She was
predeceased by two sisters, Renee Brousseau and Lila Bashaw; and four
brothers, Raymond, Edgar, Edward and Orel. Orel died while on active
duty during World War II.

Born in
Ticonderoga on Jan. 18, 1924, she was the daughter of Leo and Anna
(Wisell) Aunchman
Leona was a
resident of Ticonderoga for most of her life. She was a veteran of the
U.S. Navy, having served during World War II in the American Theater
of Operations and received the Good Conduct medal. She was a member of
American Legion Post 224 of Ticonderoga
She was a
communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Ticonderoga and was a
member of the church choir for many years. She was also a member of
the Catholic Daughters of America, Court of St. Mary's 794 of
Ticonderoga. She was employed by Fort Ticonderoga for many years and
had a great love for the Ticonderoga area and its history. Earlier in
her life, she was a tennis and golf enthusiast.
She is
survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Ann and Reginald Curtis
of Ticonderoga; one sister, Mary Allen of Crown Point; eight
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Her son,
James L. Cooke, died before her in 1989.

— Clayton P. Poitras, 76, of Dublin Avenue, Nashua, N.H., died
Saturday morning, March 4, 2000, at Catholic Medical Center in
Manchester, N.H.
Mr. Poitras
was born in Plattsburgh on June 7, 1923, son of the late George H. and
Corinne (Passino) Poitras.
A resident of
Nashua, N.H. since 1977, Mr. Poitras had previously resided in Grand
Isle, Vt., from 1964 to 1977 and in Springfield, Mass. from 1947 to
1964.
He is the
husband of Alice A. (Dowd) Poitras of Nashua, with whom he would have
celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 16, 2000.
Mr. Poitras
had been employed in the building construction business for a number
of years. He was general superintendent and field manager for the Leo
Spear Construction Company of Burlington, Vt. Mr. Poitras began his
working career as a carpenter with his father, George H. Poitras, in
Plattsburgh.
For many
years, he was a member and officer of the United Brotherhood of
Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 96 of Springfield, Mass. and
served as the recording secretary for the Carpenter's District Council
of Western Massachusetts. He was a communicant of the Parish of the
Resurrection in Nashua.
Educated in
Plattsburgh, Mr. Poitras attended Mount Assumption Institute in
Plattsburgh. A Navy veteran, he served during World War II as a Seaman
Flrst Class. His tours of duty included the American Campaign, the
European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and
the Philippine Liberation.
Besides his
wife, survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Clayton P.
Jr. and Gail I. Poitras of Montpelier, Vt., Jeffrey D. and Angela D.
Poitras of Hooksett, N.H. and James D. and Sandra C. Poitras of
Litchfield, N.H.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cheryl A. Poitras of
Phoenix, Ariz. and Sara Davis-Pagan and Ernest Pagan of Nashua, N.H.;
a brother and sister-in-law, George H. Jr. and Elizabeth Poitras of
Plattsburgh; nine grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew Poitras, Nicole

Mrs. Florence Mary Tavernia, 77, of the Coveytown Road, Constable,
died on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at her home, while under the loving
care of her family and Hospice of the North Country.
Born in Burke
on Nov. 9, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ida May
(Spinner) Rouselle. She attended local schools.
On Oct. 14,
1942, she was united in marriage to Bernard R. Tavernia, at St.
Francis of Assisi Church in Constable. Mr. Tavernia predeceased her on
Feb. 11, 1998.
She had been
employed at Tru-Stitch Footwear in Malone several years ago and was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Tavernia
was a communicant of St. George's Church in Burke, a member of the
Constable Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a past member of the St.
Francis of Assisi Altar Rosary Society in Constable, a member of the
Board of Directors of the Constable Adult Center, a member of R.S.V.P
and an avid bingo player.
Survivors
include two sons and their wives, Bernard and Sandra Tavernia of
Morrisonville and Kenneth and Heather Tavernia of Sicklerville, N.J.;
two daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Daniel Fleury of
Constable and Deborah and Palmer Foote of Massena; a daughter-in-law,

Alexys
Rose LaFountain died March 4, 2000, (stillborn) at the CVPH
Medical Center. She is survived by her parents, Clay and Michelle

William M. Meader
PLATTSBURGH
— Lt. Col. William M. Meader, 82, of Rugar Street, passed away
Saturday, March 4, 2000 at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He
was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on Nov. 3, 1917, son of Frank Robert
and Blanche (Mandel) Meader.
Bill was a
graduate of State University of New York, College of Arts and Science
at Plattsburgh. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1936. Bill
enlisted ini the United States Army Air Corps as a pilot and was a
founding member of the Strategic Air Command. He served during World
War II and Korea. Bill was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air
Medal with four bronze oak leaf clusters, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign
Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service
Medal, Japanese Occupation, Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit
Citation, Distinguished Unit Citation with two oak leaf clusters, Air
Force Outstanding Unit Award with one bronze oak leaf cluster and the
Air Force Longevity Service Award with four bronze oak leaf clusters.
Bill worked
in Civil Service in the engineering department on Plattsburgh Air
Force Base for thirteen years after he retired from the Air Force. He
was past president of the Retired Officers Association for the states
of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Northeast New York. He was
involved with Senior Citizen’s Council of Clinton County, providing
tax preparation services, as a driver for the elderly and with
Literacy Volunteers. He was an active member of the American Legion
Post #20 in Plattsburgh and a life-time member of the Plattsburgh Elks
Lodge. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Plattsburgh
and was a choir member for over thirty years.
Bill is
survived by his wife, the former Helen T. Quattrini of Plattsburgh;
one son, William M. Meader Jr., of Pasadena, Calif.; one daughter and
son in law, Sheryl and H. Theodore Doll of Euless, Texas; a grandson,
David Andrew Doll; three step sons and three step daughters in law,
Ronald and Carol Rash of Lake Forest, Calif., Michael and Tamara Rash
of Israel, Gregory and Shana Rash of Squim, Wash.; one step daughter
and step son in law, Kathleen and Peter Nelson of Snoqualme, Wash.,
and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation
will be Tuesday evening, March 7, 2000 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday
morning from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in
Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00
a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be
in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
Donations may
be made in his memory to the First Presbyterian Church in Plattsburgh.
Florence Mary Tavernia
CONSTABLE —
Mrs. Florence Mary Tavernia, 77, of the Coveytown Road, Constable,
N.Y., died on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at her home, while under the
loving care of her family and hospice of the North Country.
Born in
Burke, N.Y., on Nov. 9, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Charles
and Ida May Spinner Rouselle. She attended local schools.
On October
14, 1942, she was united in marriage to Bernard R. Tavernia, at St.
Francis of Assisi Church in Constable. Mr. Tavernia predeceased her on
Feb. 11, 1998.
She had been
employed at Tru-Stitch Footwear in Malone several years ago, and was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Tavernia
was a communicant of St. George’s Church in Burke, a member of the
Constable Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a past member of the St.
Francis of Assisi Altar Rosary Society in Constable, a member of the
Board of Directors of the Constable Adult Center, a member of R.S.V.P
and an avid bingo player.
Survivors
include two sons and their wives, Bernard and Sandra Tavernia of
Morrisonville, N.Y., and Kenneth and Heather Tavernia of Sicklerville,
N.J.; two daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Daniel Fleury of
Constable, and Deborah and Palmer Foote of Massena; a daughter-in-law,
Susan Tavernia of Malone; eight grandchildren, six great
grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her

Donna M. Longtin
WEST CHAZY
— Donna M. Longtin, 41, of the Spellman Road, died Sunday, March 5,
2000 at her home after a short battle with cancer. Donna was born in
Plattsburgh on August 6, 1958, daughter of Donald C. and Violet
(Jette) Marcoux.
Donna was a
1976 graduate of Northern Adirondack Central School. She had been
employed by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department for 23 years as
a Senior Clerk. She enjoyed bike riding, exercising, antique
collecting and loved the outdoors.
Donna is
survived by her husband, Michael A. Longtin of West Chazy; one brother
and sister in law, David M. and Jill Marcoux of Plattsburgh; two
sisters and a brother in law, Debra and Andrew Peda of Plattsburgh,
and Diane Marcoux of Plattsburgh; a nephew, Michael D. Marcoux; and
two aunts.

will be Monday, March 6, 2000 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown

ORLANDO, FLA.
— Mrs. Donna Lee (Champagne) Rahn, 58, of Lake Mary, Fla., died
Friday, March 3, 2000 at the Orlando Regional Medical Center. She was
born in Plattsburgh, N.Y. on June 3, 1941, the daughter of Dennis and
Moina (Dewey) Champagne.
She was a
graduate of Plattsburgh High School and Our Lady of Victory
Secretarial School. She was a member of St. Peter’s Church in
Plattsburgh. She is survived by two daughters and a son in law, Lori
A. Rahn, of Lake Mary, Fla.; Amy L. Padis and her husband Scott, of
Suwanee, Ga., and two grandchildren, Erik S. Brown and Sara A. Brown,
of Lake Mary, Fla.

H. and Corinne (Passino) Poitras.
