Elsie E. Crabtree Smith
Potsdam — Mrs. Elsie E. Crabtree Smith died Feb. 24, 2000, at the
United Helpers Nursing Home in Ogdensburg where she had been a
resident since 1991. She had lived in Potsdam prior to entering the
nursing home.
Born Sept. 26, 1900, in Belleville, N.J., she was the daughter of
Louis and Lilly Crabtree. She married Charles T. Smith on Aug. 21,
1921. Mr. Smith died July 4, 1977.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the United Methodist Church in Potsdam.
She was a past Matron of Mexico Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, a
member of St. Lawrence Chapter of AARP and a member of Potsdam
Sandstone Senior Citizens. Mrs. Smith worked for Diamond National
Company in Plattsburgh for many years as a payroll clerk, before
moving to Potsdam.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, Mr. Charles L. Smith of Potsdam
and Mr. David B. Smith of Plattsburgh; one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Smith
Bergmann of Plattsburgh; seven grandchildren, Ruth Anne Bergmann of
Plattsburgh, Sigmund Charles Bergmann III of Indianapolis, Ind., Sarah
(Jo Smith) Cullen of Boston, Mass., Frederick B. Smith of New York
City, Dr. Shayn S. Smith of Boulder, Colo., Michael George Turner of
Atlanta, Ga., and Pamela Ann Turner of Fairlee, Vt.; and 12
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held Sunday, Feb. 27, at 2
p.m. at the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam. Rev. Samuel Davis and
Rev. Russell Clark will co-officiate the service. A spring burial will
be in the Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam. Friends may call at the Seymour
Funeral Home in Potsdam Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening.
Richard L. Millen, 55, of Fletcher Farm Road, Bloomingdale,
died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his home. He was born April 28, 1944,
in Suffern.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and
from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac
Lake.
A prayer will follow the calling hours on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Cremation will follow.
DAVID ARTHUR MITCHELL, 36, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the
Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston Massachusetts.
Calling hours will he held on Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, from 2-4 and
7-9 p.m. at the Richer Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A funeral mass
will be held on Tues. Feb. 29, 2000, at 10 a.m. at Holy Name Church in
Tupper Lake with Rev. Robert Shurtleff officiating.
JUDITH GAIL BREWSTER WOODRUFF, 52, of Saranac Lake, died
Thursday, February 24, 2000, at the Adirondack Medical Center in
Saranac Lake. She was born May 24, 1947, in Saranac Lake. Calling
hours will be held Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service
will. be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Interment will be
in St. Bernards Cemetery in May.

Harrison R.
"Sparkie" Alger
Plattsburgh
— Harrison R. "Sparkie" Alger, 81, of Plattsburgh, died
Wednesday morning, Feb. 23, 2000 at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in
Burlington, Vt.
He was born
in Mooers, the son of Harry and Bertha (Curtis) Alger, on May 24,
1918.
He attended
Mooers Central School. He served in the U.S. Army, 1st Calvary
Division in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He
was blinded in combat in the Philippines in 1945 and was awarded the
Purple Heart.
Sparkie was a
communicant of St. John's Church in Plattsburgh and a member and past
commander of Post 538 Mooers American Legion. He was Legionnaire of
the Year in 1970.
Sparkie was
best known for his sense of humor and willingness to lend a helping
hand. He was a skilled carpenter and mechanic.
He married
the former Ruth Leahy on Oct. 25, 1952, in St. Anicet, Quebec, with
the Rev. Paul Deguire celebrating the Mass. He has one son, Terrance,
of Plattsburgh; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and William
Mayer of Latham, Nancy and Rick Strack of Plattsburgh and Janice and
Mark Linnan of Rye; six grandchildren, Shawn and Timothy Strack,
Christopher and Daniel Mayer and Grace and Harrison Linnan; two
sisters, Hazel Dickinson of Massena and Alberta Nolette of Rouses
Point; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours
will be at the Brown Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 25, from 2 to 4 and
7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. John’s Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will
be later in the year at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Paul F. Maicus
AUSABLE FORKS
— Paul F. Maicus, 75, passed away in the arms of his wife at their
home on Wednesday, February 23, 2000.
He was born
in AuSable Forks on August 6, 1924, the son of Anthony and Jennie
Belle (Towner) Maicus, one of ten children.
He graduated
from AuSable Forks High School at the age of 18 and went on to be a
teacher of sheet metal skills to 25 girls at the airport depot in
Rome. From there, he was drafted into the Air Force where he hold the
rank of T/Sgt. He was "top turret gunner" and engineer on a
B-25 from 1944-45 and flew 54 missions from bases in Africa, Italy,
and Corsica (WWII).
He received
many service awards during his stint in the Air Force and was
fortunate to receive one of the awards from bomb wing's commander,
Gen. Robert D. Knapp.
On June 14,
1947, Paul married Pearl Legge in Houston, Texas -- the beginning of a
beautiful life together.
Paul was
employed by the Great A & P Tea Company in the meat department as
manager/meat cutter for 23 years.
Paul and
Pearl owned and operated the Rex Theater for 10 years in Keeseville.
Paul was lay
leader and conference lay speaker for many years at the United
Methodist Church. Also a member of the Masonic Lodge F&AM and
Order of the Eastern Star.
He is a life
time member of American Legion Post #504. He was a photographer for
the Adirondack Record, the local newspaper in AuSable Forks, for many
years then at Denton Publication in Elizabethtown. In 1979 he became a
free lance photographer work with the Press Republician. During this
time he received several state awards including the NYS Spot News
Story Award in March 1986 which ran in the Adirondack Record. In
1997-98, he had the winning entry in the Distinguished Feature
Photography category in The New York State Newspaper Publishers
Association contest. Paul truly enjoyed taking pictures and was able
to display his work at showings at various Galleries and Centers for
the Arts.
Paul enjoyed
being with his family above all else. He loved fishing in the brook on
the family farm, walking through the woods, and telling stories about
his adventures. He loved listening to Paul Harvey daily, sitting on
the front porch, and enjoying his cigar.
He is
survived of his bride of 52 years, Pearl (Legge) Maicus, six children,
Stanley and Robbin Maicus of Merritt Island, Fla, Carol and
"Mickey" Crowningshield of Port Kent, Steven and Carolyn
Maicus of Peru, Lori and Andre Bridge of Pasadena, M.d., Robin and
Todd Osborne of AuSable Forks, and Earl and Nicole Maicus of AuSable
Forks. He is survived by 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and
many nieces and nephews. He is survived by four brothers and two
sisters, Carl and Gayle Maicus, William Maicus, Irene LaBombard,
Sidney and Donna Maicus, Eva Barton, and Gordon Maicus and one
brother-in-law, Hollis Merrifield of Plattsburgh. He was predeceased
by one brother, Raymond, and two sisters, Doris Merrifield and
Virginia Martin. He is survived by one aunt, Clavera Vanderwall of
Muskegon, MI.
Calling hours
will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2000,
at the United Methodist Church in AuSable Forks. A luncheon will be
served following the services in the church dining room downstairs.
Theresa M. Bushey
LYON MOUNTAIN
— Theresa M. Bushey, 72, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at the CVPH
Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
She was born
in Faust on May 1, 1927, the daughter of Eugene and Stella (Perry)
LaFountain.
She was
attended Tupper Lake High School and was a waitress for several years.
She was also employed by Oval Wood Dish in Tupper Lake and the dress
factory in Malone. She was a member of the Court Our Lady of the Snows
Catholic daughters in Lyon Mountain and St. Bernard's Church. She was
a former member of the Lyon Mountain Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Theresa was a charter member of the Sorrell-Woodward American Legion
Ladies Auxillary.
She is
survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Brian and Tammy Bushey of
Lyon Mountain, David Bushey of Lyon Mountain; two brothers and a
sister-in-law, Roy and Geraldine LaFountain of Tupper Lake, Harold
LaFountain of Tupper Lake; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Pearl
Arnold of Tupper Lake, Arila and Benoit Morin of Tupper Lake, Helen
Reandeau of Tupper Lake; two granddaughters, Jennifer Sue Bushey and
Jessica Mary Bushey, both of Lyon Mountain, and several nieces and
nephews.
Her husband,
Gordon Bushey died on October 17,1991. A son, Michael died in 1955. A
brother, Francis died while serving in WWII.
Calling hours
will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lyon
Mountain Funeral Rome. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated
at 10 a.m. Friday from St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain. Burial

ELLENBURG
DEPOT — Anna M. Handschuh, 72, of Route 374, died Wednesday, Feb.
23, 2000, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Brooklyn on Feb.
28, 1927, the daughter of August and Maria Theresa (Parker) Peters.
She was born
and raised in Brooklyn, moving to Durham in 1956 and later to Chazy
Lake in 1991. Ama was a member of the Pioneer Club and Merry
Mountaineers. She taught religious education classes at St. Edmund’s
Church, sang in the choir, volunteered at the Nutrition Site in
Ellenburg and at the Northern Adirondack Central Elementary School.
Survivors
include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Beatrice Handschuh of
Deer Isle, Maine; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Brian Boyea
of Ellenburg Depot; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Calling hours
will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker
Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Wake service will be held at 8 p.m.
Friday evening. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday
at 11 a.m. at St. Edmund’s Church in Ellenburg. Burial will be in
Pine Lawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island.

She was born

Depot — Helen L. Sunderland, 57, formerly of Ellenburg Depot, died
Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, in Phoenixville, Pa.
She was born
in Malone on March 19, 1942, the daughter of Edgar and Anita
(Perreault) Lagree.
She was a
1960 graduate of Ellenburg Central School. She was a secretary at
Northern Adirondack Elementary School for over 20 years and was later
employed as a teller for the Benchmark Federal Credit Union of
Wyeth-Ayerst Labs for nine years.
She is
survived by her husband, Phillip Sunderland, of Phoenixville, Pa.; a
daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Edward Yarnell of Cranford, N.J.;
two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Robyn Sunderland of Bellevue,
Wash. and John and Bethany Sunderland of Nelliston; and her mother,
Anita Lagree.
Two brothers,
Richard and Donald Lagree, died earlier.
Calling hours
will be held on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral
Service in Ellenburg Depot. A Mass of Christian burial will be

— Eva Maria McIntyre, 67, of Union Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 22,
2000, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born Dec. 3,
1932, in Stuttgart, Germany, the daughter of Christain and Barbara
(Lauth) Rapp.
Eva was a
member and lector at St. Matthew’s Church in Blackbrook for several
years and also a volunteer at the AuSable Valley Elementary School in
AuSable Forks. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Eva is
survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Randy Haner of
Troy; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Wanda McIntyre of Union
Falls; two grandchildren, Breanna and Nicole McIntyre of Union Falls;
three sisters, Tia of Germany and Dagmar and Susanne of Tulsa, Okla.
There will be
no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St.
Matthew’s Church in Blackbrook. Burial will be at a later date in
St. Matthew’s Cemetery in Blackbrook.

Irwin J. Lucia
PLATTSBURGH
— Irwin J. Lucia, 34, of the Blake Road, died Saturday, Feb. 19,
2000, as the result of a snowmobile accident on the Military Turnpike
Extension. He was born in Plattsburgh on October 19, 1965, son of
Edward R. and Pauline T. (Jarvis) Lucia.
Irwin
attended Peru Central School. He was the manager of Edward Lucia’s
Used Cars in Plattsburgh. Irwin enjoyed snow-mobiling and sea-dooing.
He enjoyed the lake and camping.
Irwin is
survived by his wife, the former Lisa A. Rivers of Plattsburgh, they
were married on August 10, 1991; one son, Nicholas E. Lucia of
Plattsburgh, one daughter, Brittany E. Lucia of Plattsburgh; his
mother, Pauline T. Lucia of Plattsburgh; one brother and
sister-in-law, Kevin and Emily Lucia of Plattsburgh; one sister and
brother-in-law, Crystal and Steven "Beaver" Simpson of
Plattsburgh; his paternal grandmother, Sadie Lucia of Altona, several
aunts and uncles, several nieces and nephews and several cousins.

Herbert P. Sheffler, 80, of the Hazen Road, died Monday, Feb. 21,
2000, at the CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh. He was born March 26,
1919, in Hamden, Conn., the son of Henry and Sarah
"Parmalee" Sheffler,
Mr. and Mrs.
Sheffler moved from Chester, Conn. to Jay in 1969. He was the employed
by Carl Ortloff of Lake Placid as a TV Repairman. This was later known
as R.G.M. Electronics of Lake Placid. Herbert enjoyed hunting, fishing
and attending horse racing. He was in charge for some time in stocking
the East Branch of the Au Sable River with trout.
He is
survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Sheffler of
Quakertown, Pa; two granddaughters, Laura of Brattleboro, Vt. and
Karen of Boston Mass; one great-grandson, River Kuhn of Vermont.
His wife of
45 years, Aileen Sheffler, died June 17, 1985.
There will be
no calling hours. A memorial service will be held, Friday at 3 p.m. at
the United Methodist Church, Au Sable Forks.
Burial will
be at a later date in Fountain Hill Cemetery, Deep River Conn.

Arthur C. St. Germaine
MORRISONVILLE
— Arthur C. St. Germaine, 86, of Morrisonville, passed away Sunday,
Feb. 20, 2000, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born
in West Plattsburgh on Aug. 10, 1913, son of Frank and Mary Jane
(Gebo) St. Germaine. Arthur was a graduate of Morrisonville High
School. He had been employed by CCC and Pal Blade in Plattsburgh. In
1941, Arthur joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater
during World War II. After the war, he joined the New York State
Department of Corrections where he worked for 35 years, retiring in
1981. Arthur was the Town of Plattsburgh Assessor for eight years and
the Plattsburgh Town Clerk for 20 years. Arthur was a member of St.
Alexander’s Church in Morrisonville, a member of the Republican
Party where he served as a town committeeman. Arthur was a member of
the American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh, a member of the
Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post #309 in Peru and a member of CSEA. He
participated in the prison golf league. Arthur enjoyed golfing,
boating, bowling and camping. Arthur is survived by his wife of 48
years, they were married on Aug. 20, 1952 in Cadyville, the former
Irene V. Frederick of Morrisonville; one daughter, Shirley MacGregor
of Portsmouth, N.H.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David St.
Germaine of Slate Hill, Earl and JoAnn Moore of Morrisonville; 14
grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, six great- great-grandchildren,
a sister, Marion Williams of Syracuse and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 from the Brown
Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Members of the American Legion and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet Wednesday evening at 7:30 for
services. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday
morning at 10 a.m. from St. Alexander’s Church in Morrisonville.
Burial will be later in the year in St. Alexander’s Cemetery in
Morrisonville. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Alexander’s
Church in Morrisonville.
Francis W. Corcoran
BRUNSWICK —
Francis W. Corcoran, 75, of Brunswick, died Friday Feb. 18, 2000, at
Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a long illness.
He was born
in Beekmantown. he had resided in Plattsburgh area for many years and
in the Capital Region for the past 25 years. He was a WWII Army
veteran having served in the European Theatre.
He was the
son of the late John E. and Margaret Dowd Corcoran.
Mr. Corcoran
was a truck driver with Red Star Express for 37 years, retiring in
1986. He was a former communicant and Holy Name member of St. Joseph’s
Church in West Chazy. He was the former Tax Receiver for the Town of
Beekmantown. He was a past member of VFW and American Legion Posts in
Plattsburgh and the Beekmantown Volunteer Fire Company.
He is
survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Maxwell Corcoran; the father of
John Corcoran of Camillus, Cheryl Seeberger of Fast Greenbush and
Kevin Corcoran of Glenville; the brother of Florence Tusa of Florida
and the late Mary Corcoran and Ruth Martin. Also survived by six
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services will be private at the convenience of the family. Intermentis
at Memory’s Garden, Colonie. Memorial contributions may be made to
Alzheimer’s Association, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206 in
memory of Mr. Corcoran.
Floyd L. LaClair
PLATTSBURGH
— Floyd L. LaClair, 77, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at the
Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.
He was born
in Ellenburg on June 30, 1922, the son of Peter H. and Cora
(Trombly)LaClair.
Mr. LaClair
was employed at Republic Steel in Lyon Mountain until 1967 when he
worked at the Mineville location. He also was employed by American
Bridge and later worked for J.C.E.O. until his disability.
He married
the former Irma Ann LaBarge on Aug. 8, 1944, at Holy Angels Church in
Altona with Rev. Alfred Boulerice celebrating the Mass.
He is
survived by his wife Irma Ann LaClair of Plattsburgh; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Dale and Denise LaClair of Morrisonville, Darrell
and Janet LaClair of Morrisonville; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry
and Veronica LaClair of Utica; three sisters and two brothers-in-law,
Helen and Ted Kruk of Clinton, Ada LaClair of Vernon, Kay and Noble
Kivett of New Port Richey, Fla.; seven grandchildren, a
great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
A daughter,
Sherry LaClair Gregory died in 1993. Two brothers, Harold and Jim
LaClair also died earlier.
There will be
no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10
a.m. Thursday from St. Peter’s Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will
follow in Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Ellenburg
Depot. Memorial donations may be made to the Meadowbrook Nursing Home
Activities Fund.

Bertha E. Wiley
CARTHAGE —
Bertha E. Wiley, 95, died early Saturday at the Hallmark Nursing
Centre, Carthage, where she had been a resident for the past five
years.
During the
1920’s, Mrs. Wiley taught for two years in one-room schoolhouses in
Cannons Corners and Ellenburg Center. She also worked for Robinson’s
in the Arcade in Watertown for several years, and as an employee for
the Jefferson County Department of Social Services. She retired in the
early 1950’s as a senior case worker following 12 years of service.
Mrs. Wiley
was born on Dec. 11, 1904, in Ellenburg Depot, a daughter of Robert
and Rachel Brisbin Colgan. She was a graduate and the Valedictorian of
Ellenburg High School’s class of 1922. She later was graduated from
Chateaugay Teacher’s Training School and took additional courses at
Potsdam and Plattsburgh Normal Schools.
She married
Harold T. Wiley, a native of Ellenburg Depot and graduate of St.
Lawrence University, in 1927, in Ogdensburg. They lived for three
years in Highland, where Mr. Wiley was a teacher for the Highland
Central School. In 1930, they moved to Watertown where Mr. Wiley
became a longtime educator, retiring as superintendent of schools in
1968. Mr. Wiley died in 1982.
Mrs. Wiley
had been a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Watertown
since 1931, where she belonged to the Philathea Class and taught
Sunday school. She was active in the Girl Scout Organization and was
Commissioner of the Jefferson County Girl Scouts at the time that Camp
Trefoil, the council’s resident camp, was purchased.
She also did
volunteer work for the House of the Good Samaritan Auxilliary and was
a member of the New York State Retired Teacher’s Association, The
North Country Bird Club and the Four River Valleys Historical Society.
She is
survived by two sons, Dr. William D. Wiley, Pleasant Lake, and Harold
R. Wiley, Lowville; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Marjorie E.)
Cleveland, Montgomery Village, Maryland, and Mrs. James (Mary Ellen)
Ormiston, Venice Center, NY; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren,
one great-great grandson, and many nieces and nephews.
She is
predeceased by her granddaughter, Kathy Wiley Zeosky; five brothers,
Eldon, Merritt, Ellsworth, Wellington and Charles; and two sisters,
Edith McDonough and Elsie Hesseltine.
A memorial
service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Asbury
United Methodist Church, 327 Franklin Street, Watertown, with the Rev.
Catherine E. Salisbury, former Assistant Pastor of Asbury United
Methodist, officiating. A committal service will be held in spring at
the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Ellenburg Depot, followed by the
burial of her cremains in the Sheldon Hill Cemetery, also in Ellenburg
Depot.
Memorial

Robert N. LaPointe
MALONE —
Robert N. LaPointe, 64, of Constable St., Malone died Monday Feb. 21,
2000, at Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone.
Born in Lyon
Mountain, on Jan. 9, 1936, he was the son of Howard and Bernice
(LaFlesh) LaPoint.
Mr.LaPointe
is survived by six sisters and four brothers-in-law, Barbara and
Donald Collins of Lyon Mountain, Jeannette Dubray of Lyon Mountain,
Sally Kline of Lyon Mountain, Mary and John Cayea of Lyon Mountain,
Genevieve and John Mailloux of Brainardsville, Diane and Bruce Shutts
of Merrill; five brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Judy LaPoint
of Chazy Lake, William and Judy LaPoint of Bethel, Conn., Francis and
Jackie LaPoint of Merrill, Albert and Betty(Charland) LaPoint of
Merrill, Tommy and Peggy LaPoint of Chazy Lake; many nieces and

Those that
preceded in death were his parents and two brothers, Phillip LaPoint
and Howard LaPoint Jr.
Mr. LaPointe
served in the US Marines from January 1954 until January 1957 when he
was honorably discharged. He enjoyed all outdoor sports including
hunting and fishing. He was employed by Camp Jeanne D’Arc in Merrill
for several years as groundskeeper and maintenance man.
Visitation
will be at Chateaugay Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 2-4 and
7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24,
2000, in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will take place at
Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens, Ellenburgh Depot.
DOROTHY LYONS, 85, of
Phoenix, Ariz., died Jan. 18, 2000, after a long illness.
She was born
on Aug. 2, 1914, the daughter of the late Arthur and Esther (Callaway)
Guyette.
A Memorial
Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at 9 a.m. from St.
Joseph’ss Church in Treadwell Mill. Burial will be later in the year
in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Plattsburgh.

E.F. "Peter" Drown
PLATTSBURGH
— E.F. "Peter" Drown, 70, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 at
the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
He was born
March 28, 1929, the son of Stephen and Clara (Colgan) Drown, in
Ellenburg Depot.
Peter
graduated from Ellenburg Central and the Simmons School of Embalming.
With his fathers and brothers, he owned and operated S.L. Drown and
Son’s and the Ellenburg Credit Corporation for many years. Peter
served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Peter was a
member of several fraternal and service organizations. He was a
founding member of the Ellenburg Depot Volunteer Fire Department. For
many years active in the Kiwanis Club, Peter was a past president of
the Ellenburg Kiwanis Club, and in 1966 served as lieutenant governor
for the New York State Kiwanis. Peter was a member of the Mount Hermon
Masonic Lodge in Ellenburg and a former Shriner. He was a lifetime
member of both Sorrell-Woodward Post 1619 American Legion in Lyon
Mountain and the Northern Lights V.F.W. in Ellenburg. Peter was a
former member of the Board of Directors of Keeseville National Bank.
Peter
co-founded Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens of Plattsburgh and
Ellenburg Depot, serving as president since its inception. He founded
Drownwood Forest National Pet Cemetery in Altona circa 1981, and at
his death, was a member and the Executive Director of the
International Association of Pet Cemeteries.
The
consummate businessman, Peter, both singly and with family members or
associates, founded and operated many North Country businesses in his
life. Among them are E.F. Drown Funeral Service of Ellenburg Depot,
Mooers and Champlain; O’Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home of
Plattsburgh; Drown Brothers Monument Company; Curtis Vault Company;
Chateaugay Funeral Home; Lyon Mountain Funeral Home; Paul and Hogan
Insurance Agency of Ellenburg Depot; Drown Ambulance Service; Blue
Haven Campground; Lake Roxanne; Peter’s Market and deli of Ellenburg
Depot; Continental Monitoring; Peter Drown Travel; Ace in the Hole;
and Pete Drown, Incorporated.
A member of
the local Adirondack Wanderers and the America Volkssport Association,
in the 1980s Peter walked (and sometimes swam and bicycled) at volks
march events and locales in all fifty of the United States. An
associate member of the Century Club, Peter visited some 65 countries
around the globe. He traveled extensively in Europe, and touched down
on six of the world’s continents, crossing the Equator, both
Tropics, the Arctic and Antarctic Circles as well as the International
Dateline. Two weeks ago, he returned from Antarctica, having
successfully completed one of his lifelong dreams. Whether treated as
a diplomat in Russia or sleeping on a train station bench in Belgium,
Peter loved the opportunities he had to enjoy the various cultures and
cuisine offered throughout the world. At his death he was
contemplating trips to Australia or the North Pole.
An avid
collector, particularly of antique toys, coins and dictionaries, Peter
devoted much of his time in the nineties to research and writing. An
aficionado of the crossword puzzle, Peter authored two books on the
subject and also wrote a book on mythological characters.
Peter is
survived by his wife, Lucy Morrow Drown of Plattsburgh; a daughter and
son in law, Roxanne Drown and Robert Vergara of Nyack, N.Y.; two sons
and daughters in law, Curtis and Andrea Drown of Plattsburgh, and
Stephen and Brenda Drown of West Chazy; two stepsons, Elliot Luke
Morrow and Simeon Paul Morrow, both of Plattsburgh; one sister and
brother in law, Pearl and Lee Smith of Mooers; four grandchildren,
Alyssa Drown of Plattsburgh, Dylan Vergara of Nyack, Dana Vergara of
Nyack, and Chelsea Drown of Plattsburgh; and several nieces and
nephews. Two brothers and a sister, Alton and Martin Drown and Lyda
Brooks, and a granddaughter, Whitney Drown, predeceased him.
Visiting
hours will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Neill-Redden-Drown
Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Funeral services will be held on
Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Beekman Street United Methodist Church
in Plattsburgh. Entombment will follow in the Drown vestibule at
Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Ellenburg Depot. In

Irwin J. Lucia
PLATTSBURGH
— Irwin J. Lucia, 34, of Black Road, Plattsburgh, died Saturday,
Feb. 19, 2000 in a snowmobile accident on Military Turnpike Extension.
He was born
in Plattsburgh on Oct. 19, 1965, the son of Edward R. and Pauline T.
(Jarvis) Lucia.
He attended
Peru Central School and was the manager of Edward Lucia’s Used Cars
in Plattsburgh. He enjoyed snowmobiling, sea-dooing, the lake and
camping.
He married
Lisa A. Rivers on August 10, 1991.
Survivors
include his wife, Lisa; a son Nicholas E.; a daughter, Brittany E.
Lucia; his mother, Pauline Lucia; one brother and sister-in-law, Kevin
and Emily Lucia, all of Plattsburgh; a paternal grandmother, Sadie
Lucia of Altona; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Brown Funeral Home in

2000, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
