ESSEX
JUNCTION — Orville E. (Goody) Goodrow, 81, of Essex Junction died
Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, with his
loving family by his side.
Goody was
born Aug. 1, 1918, at home in Rouses Point, the son of Harry and
Bertha (Seymour) Goodrow. At birth, he weighed less than two pounds,
and was cared for by his mother, who kept him warm in a shoe box she
placed on the oven door, and fed him through a medicine dropper.
On July 20,
1953, he married the love of his life, Mary (Gould) Goodrow, at the
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington, Vt.
Goody
graduated from Rouses Point High School in 1936, and attended St.
Bernard’s and Wadhams Hall Seminary in Ogdensburg. During World War
II, he proudly served in the United States Navy at Pearl Harbor,
Hawaii, where he was an electrician. Following his military service,
he attended and graduated near the top of his class at St. Michael’s
College in 1947. After graduation, he taught Latin and Greek at St.
Michael’s. He was proud when St. Michael’s honored him as a Golden
Knight on the 50th anniversary of his graduation in 1997.
Goody was a
gifted musician, mastering the piano and the Hammond Organ. He was
recently honored by the Musicians Union in Vermont as a charter
member, a membership he maintained for over 50 years.
During his
service in the Navy, Goody played piano for Big Band Leader Artie Shaw’s
U.S. Navy Jazz Band. In Vermont, he was one of the state’s best
known musicians for several years, performing on board the Steamship
Ticonderoga as it navigated Lake Champlain, and at night spots
including the Hotel Vermont and The Black Cat. In the 1950’s he was
featured on programs on WCAX television and WJOY radio. For several
years, Goody entertained in front of the grandstand at the Champlain
Valley Fair. He was proudest of his career playing the organ and piano
in the dining room at the Holiday Inn in South Burlington, Vt. where
in 1965 he was hired to perform for six weeks, but remained until his
retirement in 1995. At the Holiday Inn, he developed a loyal following
of listeners, including many tourists from around the country who
often wrote asking for tapes of his music, and planned their Vermont
vacations so that they could hear him perform. He began his
performances with his signature song, "Moonlight In
Vermont," and closed each night with "Goodnight Sweet
Jesus." Goody also worked for many years in the music department
of Abernethy’s Department Store in downtown Burlington.
Goody was a
devout Catholic, and shared his faith through his God given gift of
music, by serving over the years as organist at several local Catholic
Churches. He loved hymns, and played an especially beautiful Ave
Maria.
From 1965 to
1980, Goody served as a Guidance Counselor and Director of Guidance in
the Winooski School District, and was a member of the Vermont Chapter
of the National Education Association. He also worked in Guidance at
St. Francis Xavier School in Winooski, Vt. Goody made many lifelong
friends among students with whom he worked, and was devoted to the
well-being of the children of Winooski.
He leaves his
wife of over 46 years, Mary; a brother, Lloyd S. Goodrow of Stratford,
Conn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Margo Goodrow of Essex

Ben Morse, whom he often referred to as a son; and Rachel and Leighton
Walker and their family.
Goody will be
remembered by his family for his love and kindness, his faith in God,
his sense of humor and enjoyment of puns, love of photography, model
railroading, aviation, and for being a constant source of support to
all of us. Thank you Dad, for always knowing the right thing to say to
us at a difficult time, for sacrificing to send us to Catholic
schools, for always making yourself available to drive us where we
needed to go or to help us with our homework, and for your prayers and
blessings when you tucked us in each night. We love you.
