Charles A. SpringTWO RIVERS, Wis. -- Charles A. Spring, Two Rivers, Wis., died peacefully at home Feb. 27, 2006. Associated with the Two Rivers school system for 30 years before retiring in 1976, he taught courses such as Problems in American Democracy, economics and American history. After retirement, he continued to be interested in these issues as well as in enlarging consciousness about preserving and promoting the prudent use of the natural environment, caring for the homestead, reading, politics, economics and visiting with friends. Charles was born in Buskirk, N.Y., on Dec. 13, 1914, the son of George H. and Edna (Shedd) Spring. He attended the Port Henry, N.Y., public schools; Green Mountain Junior College in Poultney, Vt.; North Central College in Naperville, Ill.; the University of Buffalo, Buffalo, N.Y.; and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He and Winifred Ahrens were married on Dec. 25, 1942, in Nashville, Tenn., at the First Congregational Church by the Rev. Malcolm White. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor and served as a PFC combat correspondent and night fighter in New Guinea, Philippines, with Company I, 152nd Infantry, 38th Division, until the end of the war. He was involved in savage fighting to liberate the Philippines and to avenge Bataan. After World War II, he returned to Two Rivers. He is survived by his wife, Winifred and son, Shedd, who resides at home with her; son Mark and daughter-in-law Nancy of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren Soibian Huntsman (mother Chesley Spring, husband Brian), Mammoth Lakes, Calif.; Charles R. Spring (mother Carolyn Kott Washburne), Shorewood, Wis.; Alex and Sara Spring, Madison, Wis.; and great-grandchildren Aero and Oliver Huntsman. Other survivors include James Murray and family, Corinth, N.Y.; Robert Murray and family, Milton, Vt.; Merton Spring, Aurora, Ill.; Charles and Jean Ahrens, Roseburg, Ore.; John and Barbara Pappas, Seabrook Island, S.C.; cousins Marilyn Pfeffer, Lorraine Leider and Vivian Jaklin; Dennis Rocheleau; and of course, Slam the cat. Special thanks to Drs. Roy Ozanne and Robert Barylak; home care providers Tammy Pelner, Kathie Leslie, Angie Eis, Tammy Muck and Louise Wagner; and special friends Judy Goldsmith, Carol Wergin and Connie Hendricks. A memorial service for later in the year will be planned. Donations in Charles' memory may be made to Lakeshore Peacemakers, Wisconsin Public Radio, Woodland Dunes, and other like-minded organizations. BeroMASSENA -- Memorial services for Elizabeth C. Bero, 89, formerly of E. Hatfield St., Massena, N.Y., will be Friday, March 17, 2006, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Massena with the Rev. J. Michael Gaffney presiding. There will be no public calling hours. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Bombay, N.Y. Mrs. Bero died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena, N.Y. She is survived by her daughter and son, Mrs. Derry (Katherine) O'Connell of Cadyville, N.Y., and David E. and Diane Bero of Frankfort, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Born on April 7, 1916, in Bombay, N.Y., the daughter of David and Annie (Connelly) Cavanaugh. She graduated from Bombay High School and Potsdam Normal School with a bachelor's degree in education. She married Daniel E. Bero on March 29, 1948, at St. Joseph's Church in Bombay. Mr. Bero predeceased her on June 23, 1999. Mrs. Bero was an elementary teacher, teaching at Washington School, Nightengale and later at Madison Elementary School in Massena. She was a member of NYS Retired Teachers Association. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are being handled by Phillips Memorial Home, Inc., 64 Andrews St., Massena, N.Y. Carl A. BruceSARANAC -- Carl A. Bruce, 64, of Bucks Corners Road, Saranac, N.Y., died at home on March 8, 2006, surrounded by his family. He was born at Physician's Hospital in Plattsburgh on March 1, 1942, the son of the late Albert and Cecile (Seney) Bruce. He married Shirley Drollette on June 13, 1964. He served three years in the U.S. Army at Ft. Bliss, Texas, as a track vehicle mechanic (1962-1965). He worked for George Moore Truck & Equipment for 37 years, retiring on Feb. 28, 2004. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, bee keeping and puttering. He is survived by his wife Shirley (Drollette) Bruce of 41 years; their son, Charles and his companion Amy Luebbers of Chazy Lake; daughters Lisa and her husband Ken Desotell of Morrisonville, Sheila and her husband Donald Lord Jr. of Saranac, Sherry and her husband Eric Laundry of Morrisonville; grandchildren Charles Jr. and Lindsay Bruce, Joshua and Stephanie Desotell, Donald III and Kristina Lord, Tyler and Troy Laundry; sister Loraine and husband Jim Collins of Loris, S.C., brother Fred and wife Shirley Bruce of Schuyler Falls, N.Y., sister Lena and husband Ford Balch of North Carolina, brother Allen and wife Tina Bruce of Saranac, N.Y., brother Loren and wife Pam of Saranac, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews and spouses. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O'Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday from St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Saranac Fire Department. Franklin B. WarrenBEEKMANTOWN -- Mr. Franklin B. Warren, 84, of the Duquette Road, Beekmantown, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Burlington, Vt., on May 8, 1921, the son of Franklin and Leah (Brean) Warren. Franklin was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125, Plattsburgh. Franklin was a welder for General Electric, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. Franklin was predeceased by his parents, Franklin and Leah Warren; his brothers, Theodore, Herman, Carl and Earl; his sisters, Mary and Emma. He is survived by a daughter, Sandra Harris and her husband Robert of West Chazy; a sister, Viola Lucia of Altona; his grandchildren, Tara and Steven Fuller; and great-grandchildren Rayne and Brenna Fuller; several nieces and nephews also survive him. Calling hours will be Friday, March 10, 2006, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Altona. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Brown Funeral Home, Altona, with the Rev. Howard McCasland officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held Monday, March 13, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon - Saratoga National Cemetery.

ARMOND H. FREDERICK SR., 88, formerly of Pine Street, Plattsburgh, died March 9, 2006, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on May 13, 1917, the son of Herbert and Lenore (Giroux) Frederick. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church. Entombment will follow at the Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on the Tom Miller Road in Plattsburgh. A full obituary will appear in the Friday Press-Republican.
