Frances R. Brown

PLATTSBURGH -- Frances R. Brown, 86, of Pellerin Road and formerly of 1652 Military Turnpike, died following a battle with Parkinson's disease on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at the CVPH Medical Center.

She was born in Plattsburgh on April 11, 1919, the daughter of William and Jennie (Guyette) Darrah. She married James E. Brown in Plattsburgh on Feb. 26, 1936; he died in 2002.

Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Peter's Church.

She loved hunting, fishing and camping with her husband, and also enjoyed crossword puzzles.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Caska of Plattsburgh; one daughter-in-law, Marcia Brown of Clearwater, Fla.; one brother, Edward Darrah and his wife, Edna, of Plattsburgh; two sisters, Genevieve Hart of Beacon, N.Y., and Shirley St. Louis and her husband, Stanley, of Plattsburgh; seven grandchildren, Beverly Brown, Bryan Brown, Gloria St. John, James R. Brown, Timothy Brown, Amy Brown and Julie Burnah; several great and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her son, James W. Brown; a brother, Ralph Darrah; and three sisters, Marion Darrah, Gladys Manor and Dorothy Cook, all died earlier.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Church followed by entombment in Whispering Maples Mausoleum in Plattsburgh. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Association.

Lawrence Whalen Sr.

PLATTSBURGH -- Mr. Lawrence Leslie Whalen Sr., 78, of Oak Street, Plattsburgh, passed away Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Utica, N.Y., on July 8, 1927, the son of Richard Roy and Edith Elizabeth (Bush) Whalen.

Lawrence served in the U.S. Army for 10 years where he served in Korea from 1951 to 1952 and 10 years with the U.S. Air Force, retiring from the Air Force in 1966 after a combined 21 years of service. He then worked for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 20 years of service. Lawrence enjoyed gardening and fixing old broken things. He was a member of St. Peter's Church. Lawrence was predeceased by his parents Richard and Edith Whalen.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lena (LaBarre) Whalen of Plattsburgh; a son, Lawrence Whalen Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Schuyler Falls; three daughters, Carolyn Robinson and her husband, Syrell "Alec," of Wappinger Falls, N.Y., Lauren Lloyd and her husband, David, of Glens Falls, and Gena LaPointe and her husband, Timothy, of Chazy; his grandchildren, Matthew Whalen, Christopher LaPointe, Patrick Whalen and Susan Whalen; a brother, Carlton Whalen of Orangevale, Calif.; two sisters, Margreta Pugh and her husband, Beryl, of Holland Patten, N.Y.; Regina Dumond of Watertown; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Church. Interment will be at a later date at St. Peter's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Hospice of the North Country or the Emmaus Room at St. Peter's Church.

John Allen Childs

MINEVILLE -- John Allen Childs, 60, of Mineville died at Elizabethtown Community Hospital Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006.

He was born in Port Henry on Jan. 21, 1946, the son of Sherman and Marjorie (Grover) Childs of Port Henry.

John attended Port Henry High School and then proudly served as a member of the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade during the Vietnam War. He also served in the Army National Guard, retiring after 21 years of service to his country.

He worked as a truck driver and then worked at ARC until February 2005. He enjoyed woodworking and working on cars at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Donna (Forgett) Childs; his son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Lisa Childs of Port Henry; his daughter, Tiana Childs; and son, John Childs Jr. of Mineville; his grandchildren, Victoria and Anthony (AJ) Childs of Port Henry; his sisters, Linda Busier and her husband, Philip, of Weybridge, Vt., and Susan Childs of Port Henry; also several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. He will have a full military service in the spring and burial will be at Union Cemetery in Port Henry.

Memorial donations may be made to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad or a charity of one's choice.

Deaths:

ROBERT B. BROWN, 73, of 10 Strang Drive, Malone, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at his home.

Born in Malone on Feb. 24, 1933, he was the son of the late Merril and Aldora (Lavarnway) Brown.

Calling hours will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in the spring.

Arrangements are through Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service, Inc. in Malone.

ETHEL IDA DARRAH, 103, of Beekman Towers died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006 at the CVPH Medical Center.

Calling hours and funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.
