Joseph Porter SharpPIKE, Calif. -- Joseph Porter Sharp, 76, of Pike, Calif., went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 2, 2006. He was born on Sept. 13, 1929, in Altamont, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Clarabelle Sharp. He worked in civil service for 24 years; was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and past commander and an ambulance driver for the Pike City Fire Department. He also was a writer for the "Pike Poll" for the Mountain Messenger. He served on the U.S.S. Midway from 1946 to 1951. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan Marie, whom he married on Dec. 10, 1950; his daughters, Deborah Patterson and son-in-law Louis of Carmichael, Calif., Linda Sharp of North San Juan, Calif., Marian Flowers and son-in-law David of Grass Valley, Calif., Joann Cartoscelli of Grass Valley and Nancy Glover of North San Juan; his only sister, Eileen Bacon and nephew Joseph of Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Jessie Sharp. Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made the local cancer society. Arrangements are with the Hooper and Weaver Mortuary, Inc., Grass Valley, Calif. Hilda I. ChiltonELLENBURG -- Hilda I. Chilton, 82, formerly of Ellenburg, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at the Brooke Grove Nursing Center in Sandy Spring, Md. She was born in Cannonsville, N.Y., Jan. 26, 1924, the daughter of Coburn and Viola (Currier) Young. She graduated from Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, N.Y., the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and the SUNY Teachers College at Plattsburgh, where she received her masters's degree in elementary education. Hilda was a music teacher at Ellenburg and Northern Adirondack Central School for 33 years. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and a former member of the United Methodist Church of Ellenburg, where she was organist for several years. She was a veteran of the armed forces, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. Hilda married James W. Chilton in Ellenburg, June 29, 1949. He predeceased her in 1995. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James Y. and Barbara Chilton of Grayslake, Ill.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary and Barry Miller of Olney, Md., Ruth and Larry Sanders of Mendham, N.J., and Sarah Chilton of Washington, DC; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Dane McGregor of Johnson City, N.Y.; two brothers and six sisters-in-law, Nathan Young of Berkshire, N.Y., Donald and Christine Young of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Josie Treggett and Alba Chilton of Plattsburgh, Mary Jane Chilton of Ellenburg, Mary Coscia of Flanders, N.Y., and Charlotte Young of Newfield, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Ellenburg. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Community Center in Ellenburg, with a reception following the service. Burial will be at a later date in Sheldon Hill Cemetery in Ellenburg Depot. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hilda and James W. Violet I. LaymanPLATTSBURGH -- Mrs. Violet I. Layman, 91, of Lake Forest, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 1, 1914, the daughter of Pearl and Emma Gilbert. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Philip M. "Hop" Layman; a son, Stephen Layman; and a sister, Frances Libby. Violet is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Suzanne and Larry Kudrle of Plattsburgh; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Lake Forest at 2 p.m. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family at Woodale Lutheran Church, St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Interment will be in the family plot at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minn. Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Phyllis V. (Yell) HendrixMORIAH -- Phyllis V. (Yell) Hendrix, lifelong resident of Moriah, N.Y., passed away into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at the CVPH Skilled Nursing Home Facility with her family by her side. She was born in Moriah, N.Y., on Nov. 3, 1909, in the home where she resided for 9412 years. She was the daughter of Daniel H. and Eliza Jane (Bigelow) Yell. Phyllis began her teaching career in 1930. She taught school in several one-room schoolhouses for seven years. She was a lifelong member of the Moriah United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano, knitting, gardening and above all spending quality time with her family and friends. Phyllis married the love of her life, Alton Thomas Hendrix on June 25, 1932. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Sheila and Robert E. O'Banion of Moriah and Jane and Walter Mooney of West Chazy; grandchildren, Robert M. O'Banion and wife June, Lori Kilburn and husband John, Timothy O'Banion and wife Lisa and Penny Dumas and husband Andrew; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer O'Banion, Melissa Kilburn, Tyler Kilburn, Jason O'Banion, Morgan Mooney; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Percival Yell; sister, Pauline Yell and her husband Alton Thomas Hendrix. Calling hours will be held at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry, N.Y., on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Moriah, N.Y. Donations in her memory may be made to the United Methodist Churches of Moriah or Plattsburgh, Moriah Fire Department, Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad or the CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility.

BETTY L. COOK, of Edward Street, Malone, N.Y., died Monday, Feb.
7, 2006, at her home while under the loving care of her family and Hospice
of the North Country.
He was born in Malone, the daughter of the late Morris and Theresa Taro
Hosson.
Calling hours will be Friday at Notre Dame Church in Malone from 1 to 2
p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. at
Notre Dame Church in Malone with the Rev. Shane Lynch officiating. Burial
will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in the spring.
Arrangements are through the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service, Inc. of
Malone.
SHIRLEY PECOR, 76, of the Alder Bend Road, Altona, died Tuesday,
Feb. 7, 2006, at the CVPH Medical Center.
