Herta M. Ashline

ROUSES POINT -- Herta M. Ashline, 70, of 10 Church St., Rouses Point, N.Y., died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Neustadt, Lithuania, on Aug. 22, 1935, the eldest daughter of August and Auguste (Rupkalwis) Kalweit.

Her family moved to Germany when she was a child and lived there through World War II. She and her family came to the United States in 1956. She was married to James F. Ashline of Rouses Point on May 9, 1970. Much of her time was spent working on the family farm while raising her three children.

She was very active in the church, assisting in all fundraising events and teaching Sunday school. She assured that the altar always had fresh flowers for everyone's enjoyment -- much of the time with the flowers she had lovingly grown in her own garden. Referred to by many as a songbird, she was passionate about music. She enjoyed her role as a lead soprano in the church choir, often performing solos whenever help was needed. From the time she first joined, she was also a perennial participant in the annual Christmas cantata at the First Presbyterian Church in Rouses Point until recently, due to illness.

She was a strong link with regard to her family. A source of strength, love and hope, she remained positive despite life's trials and always put others before herself.

She is survived by her husband James of Rouses Point; two sons, David of Lee, N.H., and Daniel of Greenfield, Mass.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Glen Stegner of Grand Isle, Vt. She is also survived by two sisters, Irma Herrmann of Stoughton, Mass., and Auguste Megalaitis of Norwood, Mass.; and three brothers, Otto Kalweit of Stoughton, Mass., George Kalweit of Ontario, N.Y., and Wilhelm Kalweit of Springfield, Ohio; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home in Rouses Point. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Rouses Point. Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery.
