John initially worked for the Big Ridge Coal Company and later worked for Whayne Supply as a heavy equipment mechanic, where he received extensive training in the area of Caterpillar heavy equipment. In 1982, John formed his own business, Anderson Heavy Equipment Repair. He operated this business in and around the Pikeville, Ky., area until such time that he returned to New York State in 1987.
