Judith GalamianELIZABETHTOWN -- Born in Norfolk, Va., in 1908, Judith Johnson Galamian was the wife of violin pedagogue, Ivan Galamian and co-founder of the Meadowmount School of Music. They were married in 1941 in New York City by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and bought the Meadowmount farm located in Westport, N.Y., in 1944. To three generations of world famous classical musical artists, Mrs. G., as she is known, was the driving force behind the Meadowmount School of Music. After her husband's death in 1981, she continued to run the school with the assistance of the Society of Strings, which her husband founded. "I'm no musician, just a simple country girl from Virginia." Mrs. G. often explained, "My husband was the Boss." But to hundreds of local people, both teens and adults who spent their summers cooking and cleaning at the music school, Mrs. G. was the boss. During the winter months Ivan Galamian taught violin at Juilliard and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, as well as teaching at their apartment on West 73rd Street in New York City. Their apartment parlor was lined with photos of the students such as Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Jaime Laredo, Michael Rabin, Kyung Wha Chung, Arnold Steinhardt and Joshua Bell, to name but a few musical stars that he trained for over 40. Judith and Ivan Galamian's ashes will be interred at a ceremony near the Meadowmount Concert Hall next summer.
