Claude P. GooleyCHAMPLAIN -- Claude P. Gooley, 83, of Champlain passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005 at his home. Mr. Gooley was born Oct. 14, 1921 in Champlain, the son of Peter and Blanche (Lambert) Gooley. He graduated from Chateaugay Central School in 1940. Mr. Gooley married Myrtle R. LaBarre on Sept. 21, 1942 in St. Edmund's Church in Ellenburg. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the 414th Infantry in the 104th Division. Mr. Gooley received a Purple Heart Award and was honorably discharged in 1945. At the time of his discharge, he held the rank of staff sergeant. He was employed as a machinist for many years at Sheridan Iron Works in Champlain. Mr. Gooley was a honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus in Champlain, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1418 in Champlain and an active member of St. Mary's parish in Champlain for more than 50 years. He was a wonderful provider, loving father and loving husband. Survivors include two daughters, Catherine M. Gooley of Canton, N.Y., and Carolyn A. Engle and her husband David of Greenfield, Mass.; four sons, Donald C. Gooley and his wife Linda (Belrose) Gooley of Colorado Springs, Colo., William P. Gooley and his wife Louise of Shrewbury, Mass., Richard D. Gooley and his wife Irma of Newport News, Va., and Stephen G. Gooley and his wife Mary of Easton, Pa.; two brothers, Ronald Gooley and his wife Anna of Champlain and Carl Gooley and his wife Kathy of Scotia, N.Y.; one sister, Bette Anderson and her husband Gus of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Villalon, David Gooley, Jeannine Combs, Augusta Brotzman, Kelly Gooley, Shannon Gooley, James Gooley and Willie Gooley; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law James LaBarre and his wife June of Plattsburgh, Roger and Anne Duffina; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Mr. Gooley was predeceased by his wife Myrtle on May 22, 1985; and one grandson, Brent Gooley. Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, at M.B. Clark Funeral Home, 196 Elm St., Champlain. The VFW will meet at 7:30 p.m. and the K of C will meet at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, at St. Mary's Church in Champlain. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery on Church Street in Champlain. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Champlain EMS, American Cancer Society, or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Marie Lorraine WalshPLATTSBURGH -- Marie Lorraine Walsh, 82, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005 at Meadowbrook Heath Care Facility in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Sept. 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. Kavanagh and Mary "Mayme" (Hallinan) Kavanagh. Lorraine graduated from St. John's Academy as valedictorian of the class of 1940. She married Arthur J. Walsh of Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1947 and they made their home in Brooklyn and Ohio. Following her retirement in 1988 from JC Penny in Columbus, Ohio, she returned to Plattsburgh and became the loving caregiver of her mother, Mayme Kavanagh. Besides her parents, Lorraine was predeceased by her husband, Arthur J. Walsh; her son, Timothy J. Walsh; her brother, Andrew J. Kavanagh; and her sister, Betty Winegar. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Fiorillo of Albany, N.Y.; numerous nieces and nephews; and three grandchildren. Calling hours will be held on Monday, Sept. 26, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be held at a later date in Ohio. Leland "Lee" Rivers passed away on Sept. 7, 2005 at his home in Virginia at the age of 69. He was born in Malone, N.Y., on Jan. 25, 1936, the son of John Rivers and Delia (Hosler). He was baptized at St. John Bosco on Feb. 16 of the same year. He was predeceased by his parents and the following siblings: John, Robert, Lawrence, Chester, Adolphus, Martha, Irene, Marguerite and Ermaline. He is survived by one sister, Evalina Gravel of Keeseville; his former wife Barbara (Unwin) and their children, Kitten and Kelly; his former wife Rose (Hutchins) and their children, Randy, John, Sherri and Lee; and by many grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He grew up and lived his early life in Malone. He served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1955 until December of 1958. He also served on the Malone Village Police Department with his brother, former police chief Bob Rivers. In the sixties, while still in Malone, he played rhythm guitar in a traditional country-western band whose other members included his brother Bob and their nephew Norman Rivers. The band played locally and in Mt. View. He moved south in September of 1969 and established a career with an international fibers production plant that would span over 20 years, working from the entry level position up into management. He chose early retirement from that profession in 1991 and returned to school to become accredited with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as an armed security officer. In 1995 he was forced into full retirement due to his emphysema (C.O.P.D.). He kept busy with his grandchildren and his Chihuahua companion, Todd, for another 10 years. Despite his battles with various illnesses "" he made it through with his personality and sense of humor. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Notre Dame Church in Malone on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his name to the American Lung Association to further education and research about C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), or to the American Red Cross in support of Hurricane Katrina victims. Jerome C. GerhardtMAPLE HEIGHTS, OHIO -- Jerome C. Gerhardt, beloved husband of Christine (Cyr); father of Ireland Nicole of Maple Heights; dearest son of Margaret (Palisin) of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and the late Robert; brother of James (Heather); and loving uncle of many. Friends may call at the Ferfolia Funeral Home, 356 West Aurora Road (Route 82), Sagamore Hills, Ohio, for visitation on Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. Services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with a church service to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery.

JOSEPH J. REED, 72, of Clark Hill Road, Saranac, died Sept. 21, 2005 at his home. He was born on Jan. 17, 1933, son of the late Harry and Margaret (Molitor) Reed. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be held at a later date in Saratoga National Cemetery. ZIELINSKI, 49, of Los Angeles, Calif., died unexpectedly on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. He was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Jan. 6, 1956, son of the late William H. and Doris (Lorry) Zielinski. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.
