Published: 5/15/05George W. Pheneuf Jr.CHAMPLAIN — George W. Pheneuf Jr., of Champlain, N.Y., died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in Rouses Point. He was born on Jan. 16, 1931, in Trenton, N.J. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and received a Purple Heart. He married Rose M. Rock, she survives. He was employed as a machinist at Harris Graphics in Champlain for 33 years. He was also employed at Giroux’s Poultry Farm and Green Thumb Environmental. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, animals and long motorcycle rides with his son, Fred. He was a life-time member of both Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1418 and American Legion Post 767 in Champlain. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Daniel J. Pheneuf and his wife Susan Ann of Chazy and Frederick G. Pheneuf and his wife Michele of Champlain; one daughter, Theresa Ann Pheneuf of Champlain; three grandchildren, Kimberly Pheneuf of Chazy, Abigail Pheneuf of Champlain and Joshua Pheneuf of Champlain; one brother-in-law, Homer St. John of Cohoes, N.Y.; his best friend, Leon Vassar of Mooers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, George W. Pheneuf Sr. and Anna Marie Kelly; and one brother, James Pheneuf. Calling hours will be Monday, May 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the M.B. Clark Funeral Home, 196 Elm Street in Champlain. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Coopersville. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery on Church Street in Champlain. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to his wife, Rose M. Pheneuf. Dr. John L. YardanPLATTSBURGH — Dr. John L. Yardan, esteemed professor of philosophy at SUNY Plattsburgh, died Thursday, May 12, 2005. Dr. Yardan, age 77, had been in good health and was teaching full time until his sudden death Thursday morning. He was born April 25, 1928, in New Haven, Conn., the son of Stephen and Anna (Povaczyck) Yardan. He was educated in New Haven and graduated cum laude from Stone Hill College in 1953. John graduated from Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1957. He earned his Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America in 1965. He subsequently left the priesthood after the second Ecumenical Council in 1966. John taught at King's College and began teaching philosophy at SUNY Plattsburgh in December 1966. He met and married Plattsburgh native Annette Pickman in 1968. John's career as a teacher and a scholar spanned 39 years, eight U.S. presidencies and social changes on an unprecedented level. John was passionate about his students and about teaching. John published his book, "God and the Challenge of Evil" in January 2000. His second book was nearly finished. Dr. Yardan is survived by wife, Annette Yardan of Plattsburgh; his sister and brother-in-law, Anna Mae and Larry Treichel of New Haven, Conn.; nephew, Cliff and wife Mary Hahn of New Haven, Conn.; sisters-in-law, Lorraine and husband Fred Ottinger of Peru, Sandy and husband Lonnie Boyd of Fort Worth, Texas and Bernice Pickman and family of Plattsburgh; and by thousands of students. Calling hours for students, friends and family will be held on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Lake on Cumberland Head with burial and reception to follow. Donations in his memory may be made to the Dr. John L. Yardan Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Plattsburgh College Foundation. DEATH NOTICE Sean Patrick McCullough, 17, of Spitfire Drive, Plattsburgh, died unexpectedly Saturday, May 14, 2005. The family will be receiving guests Monday, May 16, 2005, from 3 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at 11 a.m. from St. Peter's church. Arrangements are with the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Esther L. DePew, 94, of the Mountain Spring Road, Westport, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at her home under the care of her family and High Peaks Hospice. She was born in Eureka, N.Y., Oct. 3, 1910, the daughter of Charles and Nina (Cross) TerBush. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 20, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at the Grahamsville Cemetery in Grahamsville, N.Y., with Rev. Renzi officiating. A reception will follow morning worship at the Westport Federated Church, Sunday, May 22, 2005, at 10:15 a.m. for celebrating the life and resurrection of Esther DePew. A complete obituary will be in a later edition of the Press-Republican. Arrangements are by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Westport. GRAVESIDE SERVICE Belden — A graveside service for Beulah E. Belden, of Ticonderoga, who died Feb. 19, 2005, will take place on Friday, May 20th, at 1 p.m. at the family plot of the Valley View Cemetery of Ticonderoga. Rev. Prudence Bertolino will be officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga. MEMORIAL SERVICE COOK — A Memorial Mass was celebrated Friday, May 13, 2005, from St. Augustine’s Church for Ruth Cook, 96, of Farmington, N.M., who passed away Dec. 24, 2004, at the Cedar Ridge Nursing Home in Farmington, N.M. Monsignor Joseph Aubin celebrated the Mass with Deacon George Benson, assisting. A eulogy was given by her grandson Stephen Moore. Burial followed in St. Augustine’s Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. |
