Published: 5/14/05Jean E. CareyPLATTSBURGH — Jean E. Carey, 83, of Maple Street, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility. She was born in Plattsburgh on March 20, 1922, the daughter of Arthur "Mac" and Beatrice (LaPointe) McCooey. Jean attended the Campus School and Plattsburgh High School. She married William J. Dwyer in Hartford, Conn., in 1954. Mr. Dwyer died in 1964. She then married William A. Carey in Colonie, N.Y., in 1975. Mr. Carey died in 1977. Jean was a member of St. Peter's Church. Mrs. Carey worked for E.J. Korvette, Inc. for 18 years, where she was a department manager, first in Hartford, Conn., and then in the Northway Mall on Central Avenue, Albany. She retired in 1975. Survivors include one brother, Peter A. McCooey of Plattsburgh; and six nieces and nephews, Tanya, Lori, Kaitlin, William, Marla and John. A brother, John "Jack" McCooey, predeceased her in 1995. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 15th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Champlain Valley Heart Center, c/o the Foundation of CVPH, 75 Beekman St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901. Dr. John L. YardanPLATTSBURGH — Dr. John L. Yardan, esteemed professor of philosophy at SUNY Plattsburgh, died Thursday, May 12, 2005. Dr. Yardan, age 77, had been in good health and was teaching full time until his sudden death Thursday morning. He was born April 25, 1928, in New Haven, Conn., the son of Stephen and Anna (Povaczyck) Yardan. He was educated in New Haven and graduated cum laude from Stone Hill College in 1953. John graduated from Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1957. He earned his Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America in 1965. He subsequently left the priesthood after the second Ecumenical Council in 1966. John taught at King's College and began teaching philosophy at SUNY Plattsburgh in December 1966. He met and married Plattsburgh native Annette Pickman in 1968. John's career as a teacher and a scholar spanned 39 years, eight U.S. presidencies and social changes on an unprecedented level. John was passionate about his students and about teaching. John published his book, "God and the Challenge of Evil" in January 2000. His second book was nearly finished. Dr. Yardan is survived by wife, Annette Yardan of Plattsburgh; his sister and brother-in-law, Anna Mae and Larry Treichel of New Haven, Conn.; his nephew and niece, Cliff and Mary Hahn of New Haven, Conn.; his brother and sister-in-law, Fred Ottinger of Peru; his sister-in-law, Bernice Pickman and family of Plattsburgh; and by thousands of students. Calling hours for students, friends and family will be held on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Lake on Cumberland Head with burial and reception to follow. Donations in his memory may be made to the Dr. John L. Yardan Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Plattsburgh College Foundation. Theodore E. FleuryChazy — Theodore E. Fleury, 85, formerly of Rt. 9, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in Rouses Point. He was born in Isle LaMotte, Vt., on July 16, 1919, the son of Theodore E. and Ethel (Pike) Fleury. Theodore graduated from Peru High School in 1937. He was a veteran of World War II. Theodore married Doris Guay in 1941 in St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. He owned a fishing camp in New Hampshire, where he was a fishing guide. Theodore moved to Chazy and owned and operated Ted's Country Store for many years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and a former member of the Masons. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Theodore and Linda Fleury of Hatboro, Pa.; two grandsons, Scott and Douglas; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Jane Powell of Bernhards Bay, N.Y., Jack and Sue Powell of Greenwich, N.Y., and Richard and Joyce Powell of Coralville, Idaho; one sister and brother-in-law, June and Alson Smith of Chazy. He was predeceased by his wife Doris; one sister, Eleanor Cochran; three brothers, Marion Powell, Theron Powell and Gordon Powell. Calling hours will be held Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Chazy Presbyterian Church. Donations in his memory may be made to the Chazy Presbyterian Church. Robert R. Goff Sr.Westport — Robert R. Goff Sr., 79, of Westport, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital. He was born in Westport, Aug. 12, 1925, the son of Addison and Edith (Begor) Goff. Bob was retired from the New York State Highway Department and was a past highway superintendent for the Town of Westport. He was a member of the Masonic lodge in Westport and an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. Bob was recognized by Field and Stream Magazine as a wild life and plant specialist. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Janis (Gough) of Westport; two daughters, Gail and her husband Leo Drinkwine of Willsboro and Gwen Carpenter and her fiancé Chip Pierce of' Westport; two sons, Gary Goff and his wife Tina of Newfield, N.Y., and Rusty Goff and his wife Valorie of Westport; a brother, Richard Goff and his wife Carrie of Mechanicville, N.Y.; a sister, Catherine Sweatt and her husband Robert of Lewis. Surviving grandchildren are Kenny Sweatt and wife Lois, Korey Sweatt and wife Brandy, Carrie and her husband Todd Pierson, all of Willsboro, Cheryl Drinkwine and her fiancé Aaran Garvey of Elizabethtown, Samantha, Gerra and Addison Goff, all of' Newfield, N.Y., Ricky Carpenter Jr. of Mineville, N.Y., Michelynn and her husband David Salinas of Pearland, Texas, Robert Goff III of Westport, N.Y.; great-grandchildren are Darrian and Brady Sweatt of Willsboro, Gabrielle and Preston Salinas of Pearland, Texas, and Zachary and Rylee Pierson of Willsboro. Many nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Ricky Goff of Mechanicville and a special niece and her family, Marci, Mike, Mitchell and Mary Cummings of Gansevoort, N.Y. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife's parents, John and Ruth Gough; and his 16-year-old dog, Meigs. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at W.M. Marvin’s Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Black Brook Cemetery in Westport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made to the Westport Emergency Squad. Arden Henry GrantKeene Valley — Arden Henry Grant, 68, died Thursday, May 12, 2005. He was born in Wilmington, N.Y. on Nov. 5, 1936, the son of Clinton and Mildred (Milhill) Grant. He worked for many years for the Town of Keene. He was an excellent artist and very creative with his hands; using his talent, he built many bird houses. His favorite hobbies were fishing and model trains. He is survived by two sisters, Muriel Grant of Rockville Center, N.Y., and Lillian "Betty" Melung of Melbourne, Fla.; two brothers, Frederick Grant and his wife Peggy of Wilmington and Clinton Paul Grant of West Chazy; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at W.M. Marvin's Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Keene Valley Congregational Church in Keene Valley. Burial will follow in Norton Cemetery. Florence C. Grant, 94, of 50 Mill St., Malone, and formerly of Ft. Covington, died at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone, Friday, May 13, 2005, where she had been a resident since March 2003. She was born in Brushton, N.Y., on Feb. 13, 1911, the daughter of the late George and Janet (Campbell) Carr. There are no calling hours. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Ft. Covington. Arrangements are through the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home of Ft. Covington. GRAVESIDE SERVICES Aguado — A graveside service for Suzanne J. Fitzgerald Aguado, of Wappingers Falls and formerly of Hague, who died Jan. 7, 2005, will take place on Monday, May 16th, at 10:30 a.m. at the family plot of the Old Hague Cemetery of Hague. The Rev. Marjorie Floor will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga. Belden — A graveside service for Beulah E. Belden, of Ticonderoga, who died Feb. 19, 2005, will take place on Wednesday, May 18th, at 1 p.m. at the family plot of the Valley View Cemetery of Ticonderoga. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga. |
