Robert J. "Pappy" Papineau

PLATTSBURGH — Robert J. Papineau, 75, of 11 Monty St., died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh following a short illness.

Robert was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y., on Sept. 16, 1929. He was the only son of Leon F. and Viola Taylor-Papineau.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1950, spending most of his tour of duty in Japan.

"Pappy," as he was known by his associates, worked for the New York State Department of Corrections for over 34 years. Most of his career as a correction officer was spent at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. He retired in 1985.

Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He believed how we lived was much more important than what we said and he was often heard to voice no regrets of what he had done, but rather of what he hadn't.

His passions and pleasures were simple. His wife, family and friends came first, then an old fashioned love for his country and the flag which represents it.

He loved to walk, to read, to travel and to indulge in good food. He believed truth was stranger than fiction and at The Corner Stone Book Store, one of his favorite walking destinations, he was know as "The Biography Man."

To all that came to know him, he was an excellent role model for honesty and integrity, the values he embraced and upheld. He was strong but gentle, a faithful and compassionate friend, a proponent of individuality rather than conformity and a believer that experience is the best teacher.

He has left his family with a legacy of inspirational quotes, unforgettable moments of laughter and memories that will keep him ever present in their hearts and lives.

Robert is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wandalie Martin-Papineau; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Robert Prescott of Port Douglas, N.Y., and Cherie and Lance Ladue of Fairport, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Kristia Murray and her husband Joey of Plattsburgh and Robert Ladue of Fairport, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Jodi Murray.

Survivors also include a sister-in law, Joyce Lachapelle and her husband Leo of Sherburne, N.Y., sister-in-law June Squires of Plattsburgh, sister-in-law Diane Blake of Plattsburgh, sister-in-law Rose Martin of Plattsburgh; and brother-in-law Gary Martin and his wife Helen of Chateaugay.

Robert, an only child, was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Viola Taylor-Papineau.

Calling hours will be held Friday, April 22, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. At Robert's request, a funeral Mass will follow at 6 p.m. in the R.W. Walker Chapel.
