Published: 3/4/05Harvey SmithROUSES POINT — Harvey Smith, 73, of 4 Oakwood Drive, Rouses Point, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born Oct. 22, 1931, to Willard and Grace (Mitchell) Smith. He was predeceased by his wife, who died Dec. 22, 2004. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Northeastern Clinton Central School Board for several years, and he was also a member of American Legion and the Elks Club. He was a dairy farmer and sheep farmer for many years. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Karen Smith of Millbrook, N.Y., and Wanda and Theo George of New York City; two granddaughters, Simeone George of New York City and Nicole George of Berkley, Calif.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, William Smith of Plattsburgh and Carl and Sally Smith of Rouses Point; three sisters, Gladys Zaillancourt of Quebec, Ann Downs of Cadyville, and Marion Lapan of Altona; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Louise and Frank Lavonia of Florida. Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Three Steeples Church in Rouses Point. Burial will be at a later date in Glenwood Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of the North Country, 386 Rugar St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901-3106. Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. John C. MillerAuSABLE FORKS — John C. Miller, 79, of Golf Course Road, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at the Clinton County Nursing Home in Plattsburgh after a lengthy illness. He was born Dec. 21, 1925, in AuSable Forks, the son of John and Dora (Reil) Miller. John was a veteran of World War II. He was a safety officer for many facilities in the state of New York. His last place of employment as safety officer was Sunmount DDSO in Tupper Lake. He retired from there in 1982. John was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, Tupper Lake, and a member of the American Legion Post 504, AuSable Forks. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Southmayd Miller of AuSable Forks, whom he married Jan. 4, 1949, at Holy Name Church in AuSable Forks, and marked 56 years of marriage with; a son and daughter-in-law, John David and Debra Miller of Tupper Lake; two brothers, Leonard Snow of Plattsburgh and Emerson "Tim Snow of AuSable Forks; a sister, Phoebe Whisher of Bloomingdale; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters, Edith Betters, Ann Rushia, Thelma Potter, Alice Bushey and Dorothy Blake; and a brother, Floyd Snow. There will be no calling hours or funeral service at this time. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Holy Name Cemetery, AuSable Forks. Memorials to him may be made to the AuSable Forks Volunteer Service. Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Roger Joseph DarlingSCHUYLER FALLS — Roger Joseph Darling, 64, of Peasleeville Road, Schuyler Falls, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Stamford, Conn., Aug. 15, 1940, the son of Winslow F. and Ann E. (Knox) Darling. He was an airman 1st class in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1961. Roger enjoyed working with wood. He designed and built his own log home with his brothers and friends. He enjoyed driving his "Yanto" truck, a good laugh and making others laugh and Klondike Bars. But his true love was spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his loving and faithful wife of 30 years, Wendy S. (Hagen) Darling of Schuyler Falls; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl Ann and Glen Muench of Stuart, Fla,; Lisa and Ed Gunter of Cooper City, Fla.; and Ann E. and Christopher Reed of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren, Sean, Ryan, Hannah Muench, Grace Gunter, and Fallon, Joel, Noah, Gabrielle and Josiah Reed; a great-granddaughter, Jaiden Reed; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, John and Edith Darling; Richard Darling; and William and Betty Ann Darling; a sister, Harriet "Happy Francis" Riccardelli of Peru; a sister-in-law, Jo Darling of Stamford, Conn.; two brothers-in-law, Carl Hagen of Peasleeville and Lou Bianco of New Canaan, Conn.; many nieces and nephews; and all his friends on the 5th floor at CVPH . Roger was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Winslow F. Darling Jr. and Robert K. Darling; and three sisters, Rosalie Lowman, Ann E. Bianco and Mildred Fortune. Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. A memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. at the Funeral Home with the Rev. William Reamer officiating. Donations in his memory may be made to his family. Constance P. CarpentierCHAZY — Constance "Connie" P. Carpentier, 88, of Ratta Road, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, peacefully at her home with loved ones and Hospice caregivers at her side. She was born in Chazy on March 17, 1917, the daughter of Hubert and Lillian (Ratta) Patnode. Connie married Paul Carpentier on May 28, 1938, at Sacred Heart Church. He died November 20, 1995. Constance was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She was a foreman at Chazy Orchards, where she worked for 19 years. She also worked at the Border Drive-In at Honeymooers Corners for several years. Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Lorna Parrotte of Chazy, Donna Mulverhill of Malone, Deanna Malley of Malone and Peggy Ann Gannon of Cumberland Head; and her special friends and caregivers, Jim Mayo and Dale Anderson of Chazy. Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Funeral Service will be at 2 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow at Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens, Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh. A special thanks go to all Constance’s Hospice caregivers, especially Doreen Moore and MaryEllen Branagan. Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country. Dorothy CookPLATTSBURGH — Dorothy Cook, 81, of Alford Boulevard, died Saturday April 2, 2005, at her home. She was born in Plattsburgh on March 12, 1924, daughter of the late William and Jennie (Guyette) Darrah. Dorothy served her country during World World II in the Women’s Army Corps as a welder. She was a loving and dedicated mother to two daughters, Carol Shepard of Plattsburgh and Joan Davis and her husband, Pat, of Fort Worth, Texas; two sons, Andrew Shepard and his wife, Pam, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Merlin Shepard of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; one brother Edward W. Darrah and his wife, Edna, of Plattsburgh; three sisters, Frances Brown of Plattsburgh, Genevieve Hart of Beacon and Shirley St. Louis and her husband, Stanley, of Plattsburgh; a sister-in-law, Shirley Darrah of Plattsburgh; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Merlin Shepard, and her second husband, Harry Cook; by a daughter, Judy Shepard; two sisters, Gladys Manor and Marion Darrah; and a brother, Ralph Darrah. Calling hours will be today, April 4, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held Tuesday April 5, 2005, at 11 a.m. from the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be later this year in St. Alexander’s Cemetery in Morrisonville. Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country. Mary W. RyanWILLSBORO — Mary Williams Ryan, 73, formerly of Willsboro, died at Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown on Thursday, March 31, 2005. She was born in New York City on Jan, 1, 1932, the only child of Alonzo and Fermine (Baird) Baker Williams. She was raised in the GreyStone House in Essex, graduated from Essex High School in 1949 and Champlain College, Plattsburgh, in 1953. Mary was an accountant for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. in New York City. She and her husband, Francis D. Ryan, retired in 1979 and moved permanently to Willsboro. He died in 1990. Mary was very active in the Willsboro Fish and Game Club. In her younger years, she rode motorcycles and flew airplanes. Truly an animal lover, she supported many animal rescue organizations. In her later years, when she couldn’t get out much, she kept up correspondence and phone contact with many of her old friends. There are no services scheduled at this time, but if desired, donations in her memory may be made to Willsboro Fire Department, the Willsboro Fish and Game Club or the Humane Society in Westport.
