Published: 3/22/05Ernest A. DupreyMASSENA — Ernest A. Duprey, 87, of Massena, N.Y., died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Massena Memorial Hospital in Massena, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. Mr. Duprey was employed by Alcoa in the wire mill, as a crane operator, starting in 1946 and retiring in 1982. He was a member of the 25 year club at Alcoa and a member of the Ralph J. Davidson American Legion Post 538 in Mooers, N.Y. He was born on June 18, 1917, in Mooers, N.Y., the son of William Duprey and Clara (Higgins) Duprey. He graduated from Mooers High School. He is survived by a sister, Viola Hawkins of Hemmingford, Quebec; a brother, Douglas J. and wife Olivette Duprey of Mooers, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Duprey of East Greenbush, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Rose Duprey in infancy, Edward Duprey in 1994 and Clarence Duprey in 1998. For many years Mr. Duprey was involved in helping out at JAC Tower in Massena, during his employment at Alcoa and after. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are being handled by Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews Street, Massena, N.Y., where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2005, and from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2005. Funeral services will be at Church Of The Sacred Heart at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, with the Rev. Dennis Duprey presiding, nephew of Mr. Duprey, with Rev. Donald J. Manfred concelebrating. Doris Hesseltine PatnodeJAY — Doris Hesseltine Patnode, 72, of Hesseltine Road, Jay, N.Y., passed away, Sunday, March 20, 2005, surrounded by her family at the CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, after a lengthy illness. She was born at the Keene Valley Neighborhood Home on July 24, 1932, the daughter of Jasper and Elsie (Colgan) Hesseltine. She was a graduate from AuSable Forks Central Rural High School. Doris was chairperson for the 1980 Winter Olympics Skating Events in Lake Placid. Lifetime member of the Lebanon Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, AuSable Forks and the Adirondack Star of Elizabethtown. Also a member of the AuSable Forks Alumni Association and the United Methodist Churches. She donated her services to the music department, playing the piano, organ and singing in the choirs. She also participated in the Jay Grange Minstrel Shows for many years. Doris also enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her family and friends. She and her husband were always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Julie Patnode of Heuvelton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon and Steven Niles of Jay and Cynthia Patnode of Jay; two sisters, Bette Snow of Lake Placid and Virginia Moody Ward of Maryland; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Thomas O. Patnode who died June 17, 2004; and her parents, Jasper and Elsie Hesseltine. Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 23, 2005 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the AuSable Forks United Methodist Church with Rev. Virginia Pierce officiating. A reception will be held in the church hall immediately following the church service. Burial will be at a later date in Jay Central Cemetery. Memorials to her may be made to the Heart Fund or the Lung Fund, envelopes are available at the funeral home. Eileen M. BovaBURKE — Eileen M. Bova, 81, of State Route 11, Burke died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of the North Country. She was born in Ellenburg, N.Y., on Aug. 21, 1923, the daughter of George and Mary Louise (Dupree) Tacy. She was married to Francis "Tooky" Marlow in 1943. He predeceased her December of 1957. In 1966, she married Fred. J. Bova. He predeceased her January of 2001. Mrs. Bova is survived by four children, Michael and his wife Sheila Marlow of North Bangor, N.Y., Thomas and his wife Betty Marlow of Merrill, N.Y., David Marlow of Malone, N.Y., and Rita Marlow of Burke, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Dora of Malone, N.Y., and Marion Tacy of Massena, N.Y., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husbands, she was predeceased by her parents; an infant son, Bruce Henry; a sister, Vilda Dora; a brother, Ellsworth "Bud" Tacy; three half brothers, Arthur, Raymond and Clarence Dupuis; and a half sister, Della Peets. Mrs. Bova graduated from Chateaugay High School. She graduated as a LPN with the first graduating class and received top honors. She was a member of the Red and White Association, Ayrshire Breeder’s Association and Farm Bureau. She was the best raspberry pie maker in seven counties. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23 in St. Patrick’s Church with Rev. John Demo officiating. Spring burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Chateaugay. Donations in her memory may be made to sponsor Susan King who will be taking part in a marathon for Breast Cancer Awareness on July 8, 9 and 10 in Boston, Mass.; or the charity of one’s choice. Mary Huchro SimpsonMineville, N.Y. — Mary Huchro Simpson, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y. Mary was born Aug. 12, 1909, in Mineville, N.Y., she was the daughter of Martin and Victoria (Wilk) Huchro. She married Ralph Simpson Sr. on Aug. 20, 1937. She lived most of her adult life in Mineville, as well as several years in Warrensburg. Mary operated the Club Restaurant in Mineville for over 40 years. She was a member of the Mineville-Witherbee Home Bureau for many years. She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Witherbee and St. Cecilia’s Church in Warrensburg. In addition to her parent’s, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Simpson who died Aug. 14, 1960; and her brothers, Paul and John Huchro. She is survived by her sons, Ralph Simpson and his wife Lenore of Chestertown and Frank Simpson and his wife Jan Simpson of Pensicola, Fla.; three brothers, Frank Huchro and his wife Dorothy of Keene Valley, Stanley Huchro and his wife Dorothy of Glens Falls and Walter Huchro and his wife Madeline of Westport; three sisters, Anna Anderson of Mineville, Helen Osborne of Tempe, Ariz., and Gena Haley and her husband George of Port Henry; four granddaughters; two stepgranddaughters; a stepgrandson; three great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; five stepgreat-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in April for family and friends. Spring burial will be in Union Cemetery in Port Henry. Donations may be made in Mary’s name to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad, Moriah Center, NY 12961. Funeral arrangements are with Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. Marthe Ruth StrebFulton — Marthe Ruth Streb, 78, of State Route 3, Fulton, N.Y., passed away Saturday, March 19, 2005, in A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital. She was born in Keene Valley, N.Y., on July 1, 1926, the daughter of the late George and Ethel (Lamb) Senecal. She has resided in the Fulton area since 1954. She is survived by one son, Stuart Streb of Fulton, N.Y.; one daughter, Theresa Streb of Lyons, N.Y.; one stepsister, Iona Brand of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George D. Streb on June 15, 1991; and her two brothers, George and Roger Senecal; and two sisters, Evelyn Oram and Alice Rogosinski. Calling hours will be held at W.M. Marvin’s Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Keene Valley Congregational Church. Noreen Joy ShafferPlattsburgh — Noreen Joy (Lareau) Shaffer, 58, of Plattsburgh and Ticonderoga, N.Y., passed away on Monday, March 21, 2005, at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Vermont. She was born in Plattsburgh on Oct. 2, 1946, daughter of Felix Leon (deceased) and Doris Mae Lareau. Noreen is survived by her five children, Shawn Shaffer, Holli (Shaffer) Frenchik and her spouse Donald, Lisa (Shaffer) Busby and her spouse Justin, Paul Shaffer II and his spouse Bobbi Jo and Christopher Shaffer. Noreen also leaves behind several grandchildren, Ryan Frenchik, Colton Frenchik, Jake Shaffer, Marianna Shaffer and Ainsley Elizabeth Busby, to whom her heart belonged. She also leaves behind her mother, Doris Lareau; three brothers, Milo Lareau, Felix Lareau and Leon Lareau; one sister, Darlean (Lareau) Tuller; and several nephews, nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces, of whom she was very fond. Noreen is also survived by her special friend, Irven J. Fleury of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; and her aunt, Dorothy Rachkaitis and her family. Noreen was predeceased by her father, Felix; and her very special sisters, Marlean (Lareau) Morin and Donna Lee Lareau (Shatraw). Noreen’s loving and friendly spirit will missed by all who knew her. She will forever live in the hearts of those who loved her and in the smiles of her grandchildren. We will miss you mom - We will miss you Nana. Theresa R. DarrahPLATTSBURGH — Theresa R. Darrah, 92, of Truman Avenue, Plattsburgh, and formerly of Cadyville, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Whitehall, N.Y., on Jan. 14, 1913, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter S. Grassett. Theresa married Loren Darrah on Nov. 23, 1932, in Whitehall. He died in 1970. Mrs. Darrah was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Morrisonville, American Legion Auxiliary Post 20, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 125 and the Clinton County Home Bureau. Theresa worked as a clerk at Shubert’s Store for 10 years and later as a sales clerk at Montgomery Wards for 14 years retiring in 1978. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Donna Fae) LaBombard of Cadyville; a stepdaughter, Ginger Drollette of Cadyville; five grandchildren, Deborah, Judith, Jeri-Jo, Loren and Derrick; five great-grand-children, Monica, Donald, Katelynn, Taylor and Darah; three nieces and three nephews. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Cadyville Protestant Cemetery, at a later date. Memorials in her memory, may be made to the American Heart Association. Joseph EntwistleROUSES POINT — Joseph Entwistle, 96, of White Avenue, Rouses Point, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England on Feb. 15, 1909, the son of Charles and Martha (Crowther) Entwistle. Joseph married Hilda Louise Bedford in Albany, N.Y. in 1936. Hilda died Nov. 4, 1990. Mr. Entwistle was a member of Christ and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Champlain and was a former member of Christ Church in Lonsdale, R.I., where he sang in the choir, was a Lay Preacher and a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Entwistle was a 50 year member of St. John’s Lodge 1, Free and Accepted Masons in Providence, R.I., an honorary member of Fraternal Lodge 155 and Free and Accepted Masons in Plattsburgh. He also played the piano and loved to read, write poetry and prose and collect quotations. He was well liked and respected by all who knew him and was known for his winning smile. His father died when he was age 3 and he was raised by his mother and his stepfather, Arthur Dupuis. Mr. Entwistle was in the Church Army for eight years during which time he served under the Episcopal Bishop of South Florida and also under the Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia. In Virginia, he ministered as a missionary to the residents of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville. He reached the rank of Captain during his time of service. He then returned to Rhode Island and embarked on a career as a printer, working for E.L. Freeman, the Little Rhody Press and J.C. Hall Company, from which he retired after 30 years in the printing trade. Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Ewart and her husband Andrew of Rouses Point with whom he lived for the past 12 years; one son, David Entwistle and his wife Claudette of Attleboro, Mass.; four grandchildren, Susan Ewart of Harwinton, Conn., Steven Ewart and his wife Angel of Aurora, Ill., Peter Ewart and his wife Susan of Ellicott City, Md., and Mrs. Melissa Pouliot and her husband Joseph of Cape Cod, Mass.; three great- grandchildren, Alex, Jake and Madison; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 29 at 11 a.m. at Christ and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Champlain. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Rhode Island at a later date. Arrangements are with the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Memorials in his memory, may be given to Hospice of the North Country or Christ and St. John’s Church Memorial Fund. Merton L. DicksonPlattsburgh — Mr. Merton L. "Mert" Dickson, 83, of the Fox Farm Road, Plattsburgh, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. Merton was born in Plattsburgh on Jan. 31, 1922, son of the late Lloyd and Mamie (Fessette) Dickson. Merton served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mert worked for Reed Automotive in Orlando, Fla., for 14 years, retiring and moving back to the north country in the early 1990’s. Merton is survived by a son, Tom Dickson and his wife Carol of Plattsburgh; a daughter, Janice Hawke and her husband Dan of Koppel, Pa.; a son, Robert Dickson and his wife Shirley of Bay City, Mich.; a son, David Dickson and his wife Nancy of Belleview, N.J.; two sisters, Kate Hart of Plattsburgh and Anna Dickson of Plattsburgh; two brothers, Lloyd Dickson Jr. of Altona and Earl Dickson of New York City; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Mert is predeceased by his wife, Florence (Schmidt) Dickson; and a long time companion, Margaret Conway. Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 23, 2005, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be later this spring in Point Au Roche Cemetery. Donations in Merton’s memory may be made to the FitzPatrick Cancer Center. Danne F. Geroux, 44, of Plattsburgh, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at Fletcher-Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. Arrangements were incomplete Monday evening at the O’Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Florence Coleman Baranowski Waryha, 84, a longtime resident of Malone, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone, after suffering a heart attack. Mrs. Waryha was born Dec. 5, 1920, to Michael Baranowski and Florence Coleman in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. There will be no services. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. Arrangements are with St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home, Inc. in Malone, N.Y. Dorothy M. Frenya, 94, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh. There will be no funeral services. Burial will take place this summer in Union Cemetery in Mooers Forks. Arrangements are with M.B. Clark Funeral Home in Champlain. Robert R. Rumph, 66, formerly of the Patent Road, Peru and most recently of Crossville, Tenn., died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at his home in Tennessee. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on September 11, 1938, the son of Arthur David and Louise (Esther) (Assmussen) Rumph. Memorial service will be held at a later date, at a date and time to be announced. Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. |
