Published: 2/28/05Raymond J. MitchellCOHOES, N.Y. — Raymond J. Mitchell, 83, of Manor Avenue, Cohoes, died at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy, N.Y., on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, after a long illness. He was born in Clintonville, N.Y., and was educated in Black Brook, N.Y. He was the son of the late Arthur and Mary (Ryan) Mitchell. He moved to Albany at a very young age and worked at Albany Felt for a short time. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. After serving three years, he moved back to the Plattsburgh, N.Y., area and worked at the Witherill Hotel as bartender for 20 years. He then moved to Cohoes in 1969 and worked as a bartender at Smith's Restaurant until he retired on March 17, 2000. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Grace (Provost) Mitchell of Cohoes; four brothers, Harold Mitchell of Morrisonville, N.Y., Walter Mitchell of Peru, N.Y., Daniel Mitchell of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Gerald Mitchell of Westport, N.Y. He was the brother of the late Marie M. Fitzgerald, Robert Mitchell and Lee Mitchell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family have requested no viewing hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Tuesday, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Cohoes. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Willsboro, N.Y., in the spring. Rose Nye TorranceUPPER JAY — Rose Nye Torrance, 94, a valued member of the community of Upper Jay, and teacher for many years at Keene Central School, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis A. Torrance, brother Clark W. Nye, and sister Reta Nye Stone, and is survived by family, friends and many former students. A graveside service in Jay will be announced in the spring. Rememberances may be directed to the Neighborhood House in Keene Valley or the Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay. Guay, 85, of Rouses Point, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in Rouses Point. She was born Aug. 28, 1919, in Sciota, the daughter of Frank and Louise (Lozier) LaFlore. She was predeceased by her parents and four sisters, Grace Demaris, Irene Demaris, Mabel LaPlante and Evelyn Deso. Survivors include one son, Glen Gonyo and his longtime companion, Diana Casey, of Chazy; one daughter, Barbara McCarthy and her husband, George, of Champlain; three sisters, Margaret Speranza of Sciota, Helen Brown and her husband, Douglas, of Peru, and Gladys Deso of Sciota; one granddaughter, Roxanne Gladd and her husband, Mike, of Rouses Point; two grandsons, Ricky Grimshaw of Champlain and Randy Grimshaw and his wife, Theresa, of Rouses Point. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the Clark Funeral Home in Champlain. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated noon Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church in Champlain. MARGARET E. PHAIR GREGORY, 91, of the Bradley Pond Road, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005. She was born in Plattsburgh on May 10, 1913, the daughter of Walter and Barbara (Conley) Hughey. The R.W. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements which are incomplete at this time. ROBERT F. RYAN, 81, of 11 Fort Covington St., Malone, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at his home. Born March 27, 1923, in Malone, he was the son of Leon G. and Eva (Patnode) Ryan. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Church. Spring burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Fort Covington Street, Malone. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home, Inc. SHIRLEY A. LAMITIE, 69, of 15059 State Route 30, Malone, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center. Born Feb. 21, 1936, in Lisbon, N.Y., she was the daughter of Adolphus and Florence Martin Andrews. There will be no calling hours. Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
