Published: 2/10/05Odella M. ArmstrongTiconderoga and Virginia — Odella (Dolly) M. Armstrong, 92, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, in the Augusta Medical Center in Staunton, Va., after a short illness. Born in Blue Ridge, N.Y., on Feb. 2, 1913, she was the last survivor of the ten children born to Virginia and Ferdinand Charbonneau. Mrs. Armstrong has resided at Bright View at Baldwin Park since August 2004 after living in her home at 508 Victoria Drive, Staunton, Va., for 34 years. While in the workforce, Dolly was an accountant. In her non-working hours she was an avid bridge player and enjoyed gardening and homemaking. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Staunton, Va., for many years and was active in several of their organizations. Other community work was with the Salvation Army and Kings' Daughters. She is survived by her husband, Dr. James A. Armstrong, retired president of Blue Ridge Community College; and many loving nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Saturday from noon to 1:45 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin Street, Ticonderoga. A Mass of Christian burial will follow on Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Ticonderoga. The Rev. William G. Muench, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Dolly's nephew, Rev. Mr. Elliott A. Shaw. The Rite of Committal will take place in the spring at the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the missionary work of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 126 North Augusta Street, Staunton, VA 24401. A memorial for Mrs. Armstrong is being planned for a later date in Staunton, Va. Eloria A. CassidyPeru — Eloria A. "Ding" Cassidy, 75, of Fuller Road, Peru, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Peru, July 28, 1929, the daughter of Hermas and Angeline (Brault) Remillard. She was a graduate of Champlain Valley Hospital nurse training program. Following her training she worked as a registered nurse at Champlain Valley Hospital in Plattsburgh and in Albany. She married Leonard G. Cassidy, Dec. 31, 1962, at St. Augustine's Church in Peru. He predeceased her, Oct. 20, 1975. "Ding" was a former Eucharistic Minister an enjoyed volunteering at St. Augustine's School. She also enjoyed reading and sewing, but her true love was her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Mary Jo Cassidy of Peru and Larry and Charlotte Cassidy of San Ramon, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Gregg Dickerson of Willsboro; four grandchildren, Daniel and Nickolas Cassidy of Peru and Genevieve and Madeleine Cassidy of San Ramon, Calif.; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Noella "Jo" and Claude "Bud" Rocque of Morrisonville, Rita Bracken of Keeseville and Sr. Pierrette "Pete" Remillard, GNSH of Decatur, Ga.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Rubin and Monica Remillard of Peru and Jerome "Drake" Remillard of Peru; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Gaston and Romeo Remillard; and three sisters, Valdoraise Conway, Irene Bradshaw and Pauline Remillard. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church in Peru with Rev. William Reamer, chaplain of the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, celebrating, and Rev. Vicente Jazmines, pastor, concelebrating. Burial will be in the spring in the parish cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the FitzPatrick Cancer Center in Plattsburgh. Marshall Wayne HathawayWhallonsburgh — Marshall Wayne Hathaway, 65, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born April 21, 1939, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the son of Raymond and Ethel (Strong) Hathaway. Mr. Hathaway was a member of the Willsboro United Methodist Church. In his younger years he served in the United States Air Force, worked for General Dynamics and was the manager of the Willsboro Dock and Coal. He was also retired from the Willsboro Highway Department. Marshall and his wife Ethel (Palmer) owns and runs the "Ethel's Dew Drop Inn" for 30 years. His hobbies included playing cards, especially poker, playing slot machines and traveling up and down the east coast with his beloved wife. Mr. Hathaway is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ethel; his children, Cary Hathaway and Lisa Baker and her husband Gary (Doc); his grandchildren, Justin and Shelby Jennette, Hannah Sue Baker and Trevor and Trisha Hathaway; his sisters and brothers, Vaughn and wife Hilda Hathaway, Carl and wife Mary Hathaway, Alberta and husband Dick Curran, Robert and wife Peggy Hathaway and Bradley and wife Linda Hathaway; his in-laws, Joyce and Bob Bridge, Thelma Palmer, Joan and Otis Jones, Edith and Ronald Tyrrell, MaryAnn Crowningshield, Bill and Annie Palmer, Betty and James Phillips and his best friend Alan Hutchins. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Huestis Funeral Home, Maple Street, Willsboro. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Willsboro United Methodist Church. Donations in his memory may be made to the Willsboro Fire Department. Linda Elizabeth OberstSaranac Lake — Linda Elizabeth Oberst, 60, of Saranac Lake, N.Y., and Aurora Colorado, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, Colo. She was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Dec. 5, 1944. Mrs. Oberst was a graduate of Syracuse Central Technical High School and was a 1965 graduate of Syracuse University and held bachelor's and master's degree from Plattsburgh State University. She was a librarian in the Saranac Lake Central School District until July 2, 2002, when she retired. Linda was a highly respected member of New York State Retired Teachers, New York Library Association, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Northern Chapter Beta Mu and Catholic Daughters of the American Court Street Bernard 787, Saranac Lake, N.Y. Mrs. Oberst enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and several other arts and crafts. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake and a communicant of Queen of Peace Church in Aurora. She was a devoted wife and loved her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Deacon Fred Oberst, whom she married May 29, 1965; her daughter, Rhea Anne Oberst of Denver; and her brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Joan Stonie of Aurora, with whom Linda and Fred made their home. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Queen of Peace Church in Aurora. A spring memorial service will take place in Saranac Lake, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Colorado Home Dialysis Unit. Betty M. LeducCHAMPLAIN — Betty M. Leduc, 69, of Champlain passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh after a short illness. She was born March 27, 1935, in Chazy the daughter of the late Leonard and Lillian (Peruea) Wells. She married Joe Leduc on June 19, 1954, in St. Mary's Church in Champlain. To her family she was thought of as the most perfect wife and grandmother in the world. She loved being with her family and especially her grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Joe and Dickie; and one sister, Elricka Varin. Survivors include her husband of over 50 years, Joe Leduc of Champlain; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Nelson and Betty (Menard) Leduc of Champlain, Billy and Donna (Munoz) Leduc of Champlain, Jeff Leduc of Mooers Forks, Tommy and Wendy (Delorio) Leduc of Champlain and Danny and Sharon (Jamison) Leduc of Rouses Point; two daughters, Ann Williams and her husband Jim of Champlain and Connie Menard and her husband Gary of Mooers; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hubert and his wife Joyce of Plattsburgh and Orville and his wife Lucille of Florida; and four sisters, Yvonne Osterhoudt of North Carolina, Hazel Barie of Florida, Pat Rock and her husband Bernard of Florida and Cathy Garrand and her husband Alton of Florida. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home in Champlain. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Church in Champlain. Maria BarelskiCastleton — Maria "Maryna" (Bardel) Barelski, 84, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Resurrection Nursing Home, Castleton after a lengthy illness. She was born in Krakow, Poland, she later met and married the late William P. Barelski in Vienna, Austria. As a longtime resident of Rensselaer, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as a secretary for Henry V. Rector, Inc. for many years. She was an exquisite seamstress, a great cook and avid reader and a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. Maria was the beloved mother of Marina (Walter) Gray of Morrisonville and William B. Barelski of Morristown, N.J. Beloved mother-in-law of Laura Barelski of Rensselaer; loving grandmother of Jacek and Adam Barelski and Maryna and Walter Gray. She is survived by siblings, Izabella Czaja and Henryk Bardel of Poland; brother-in-law, Paul P. Barelski of Clifton Park and sister-in-law of Nell Barelski of Albany; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Anna and Wladyslaw Bardel; and sister, Jana Konopacka. The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the staff at Resurrection Nursing Home and Community Hospice of Rensselaer for their caring commitment in caring for Maryna. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral 11 a.m. Saturday from the Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer, N.Y. There will be no calling hours and interment will be at the convenience of the family. Virginia M. LeClairOneonta — Virginia "Ginny" LeClair of Oneonta died peacefully at home on Feb. 7, 2005. She was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Ellenburg Depot, the youngest of five children of Edward E. "Beeze" and Mabel (Brickey) LeClair. Virginia attended Cortland State College, graduating with her bachelors of science in 1943, and her masters of science from New York University in 1954. She taught in South Otselic, Peru, Walton and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before coming to the Oneonta Consolidated Schools in 1958 where she taught girl's physical education and coached numerous team sports until she retired in 1976. She has traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Southwest, often visiting her far-flung family. Virginia was a member of the Oneonta Garden Club, a book club, Oneonta Business Women's Club, the American University Womens' Club and St. Mary's Church. She enjoyed playing bridge. She was predeceased by her brothers, Archie, William, Floyd and Bernard LeClair; and one sister, Nina Lewis. Surviving are her nine nieces, Anne Donnelly of Cobleskill, Helen Lacey of Prescott, Ariz., Peg LeClair of Phoenix, Ariz., Jane Ducharme of Whidbey Island, Wash., Kay Beaubien of Manitou Springs, Sandra Lewis of Phoenix, Mary Jane Aparicio of Mourne, Fla., and Laurie Mato and Ginny Haley, both of Dannemora, N.Y.; and three nephews, David LeClair of McCall, Idaho, John LeClair of Anchorage, Ark., and Bernard LeClair of Dannemora. The family is especially grateful for and friendship of Ruth Pushkar and Nancy Samuelson who made it possible for "Aunt Sis" to remain home as she wished. She has made an anatomical gift of her body to Albany Medical College, but may be remembered at a memorial service to be held at Lester Grummons Funeral Home in Oneonta on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St. Edmund's in Ellenburg with burial to follow at a later date. Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta. Anne M. Malley, 74, of Patnode Street, Malone, N.Y., died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, N.Y. She was born in Malone, Jan. 7, 1931, the daughter of the late William and Salina (Betters) Dudley. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church in Malone. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are through the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service, Inc. in Malone, N.Y. Duane E. Gillespie, 71, of Route 9, Elizabethtown, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital. He was born June 6, 1933, in Margaretville, N.Y., the son of Donald and Dorothy (Sanford) Gillespie. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown. M.W. Marvin’s Sons is in charge of arrangements. Dorothy Eleanor McCarthy, 91, of River Road, Bloomingdale, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. She was born in New York City on Oct. 12, 1913, the daughter of George and Mary (Sorensen) Allen. Graveside services will be held at Harrietstown Cemetery in May with Rev. Linda McIntyre, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are with the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Inc., Saranac Lake, N.Y. |
