Darlene Hutchins Deans

MALONE — Darlene Hutchins Deans, 58, of Limekiln Road, Malone, passed away with her family and pastor by her side on Sunday morning, Jan. 30, 2005, at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home, after a brief illness. She had been a resident since Jan. 18.

Mrs. Deans was born in Malone on Oct. 24, 1946, the daughter of Merchant T. and June Fletcher Hutchins. She grew up in Skerry and attended a one-room schoolhouse there. She then continued school in Malone and graduated from Franklin Academy High School in 1964. She continued her education at SUNY Farmingdale on Long Island, graduating in 1966 with an associate’s degree in dental hygiene and was a registered dental hygienist. She was employed by Brushton-Moira School as dental hygienist until she stopped to continue her education at SUNY Plattsburgh.

On Aug. 23, 1969, she married Norman E. Deans of Malone at Centenary United Methodist Church. He survives.

Mrs. Deans graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1970 with a bachelor’s of science degree in elementary education. She was employed by the Malone Central School District at Davis Elementary School, teaching third and fifth grade until the mid-1970s when they started a family. She and her husband, Norman, would enter a lifelong joy of parenting with the birth of their oldest son, Chad, on Feb. 10, 1977, and their youngest son, David, on Oct. 1, 1981.

In the mid-1980s she continued her education at SUNY Potsdam, graduating with a master’s of science degree in education. Along with this she gained a permanent certification in elementary education.

In addition to motherhood, she played an active role in the family farm as a recordkeeper and general pillar of strength to all. Upon the sale of the family business in 2001, she soon became employed with her husband at what is now known as Adirondack Heifer Management, Inc. in Nicholville. She remained a full-time employee there until her illness forced her to stop work in November 2004. She also enjoyed many life-long hobbies including spending time with family and friends and observing, appreciating and respecting nature.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Deans is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chad H. and Heather Deans of Rouses Point and her son David G. Deans of Malone; her mother, June, of North Bangor; a sister and brother-in-law, Gail H. and James F. Lyng of Stillwater; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John W. and Mary Jo Deans of Sackets Harbor.
