Helen Burton Everett

Newtown, Pa. — Helen Burton Everett, who dedicated her life to helping others, not only as a nurse, but also as a true friend, died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 25, 2005, at the age of 84 at Chandler Hall, Newtown, Pa.

Helen was born in New York City on Sept. 9, 1920, and spent her summers at her family place on Lake Champlain. She graduated from the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, attended Barnard College and graduated with an RN degree from Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in NYC in 1944. She married her late husband, George Todd Everett, on Feb. 17, 1945, in New York City and remained deeply in love with him all her life.

She shared a love of travel with her husband and was an intrepid traveler. She lived in Puerto Rico from 1955-1957 and in Caracas, Venezuela, from 1958 until 1964, working as a school nurse in both places. In 1964, she moved with her family to Excelsior, Minn. She graduated from the University of Minnesota and became a member of the Minnesota Planned Parenthood Board of Directors. She retired with her husband George in 1987 to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take advantage of the cultural events at the nearby university community.

An avid tennis player, she enjoyed the camaraderie of the sport and met many of her closest friends on the court. She was also a great lover of the outdoors, having spent her adolescent years climbing in the Adirondack Mountains and her later years canoeing in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota in the summer and cross-country skiing in 30-degree below weather in the winter.

Helen Everett's true love was spending her summers with her family on the shores of Lake Champlain. She welcomed everyone into her home and was always willing to lend an ear to those who were having difficulties. Helen appreciated her own blessings and worked tirelessly to give to others less fortunate. She volunteered her skills in numerous capacities and donated generously to charity, most prominently Planned Parenthood, United Nations Association and Alzheimer’s disease research.

Daughter of the late Benjamin and Emeroy (Seymour) Burton, she is survived by her three children, Todd Everett of Berkeley, Calif., Davis Everett of Middletown, Calif., and Susan Rawes of Traumbauersville, Pa.; and her five grandchildren, Caleb Everett, Silas Everett, Rachel Rawes, Samuel Rawes and Zoe Everett; and her great-grandson, Daniel Ross. A memorial service will be held this summer in Chazy, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in the name of Helen Everett to Planned Parenthood of Minnesota (www.ppmns.org).
