Published: 01/16/05Verlie N. HarrisonPLATTSBURGH — Verlie N. Harrison, 81, of Flynn Avenue and formerly of Ingraham, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Champlain on July 20, 1923, the daughter of Edson and Dora (Matott) Sterling. During World War II, Verlie moved to Schenectady to work at General Electric. While there, she met her future husband, Emil Fritzsche. Upon his return home from the war in the Pacific in 1946, they married. They moved to Brooklyn where she remained until he died in 1958. She then returned to Ingraham and later moved back to Brooklyn where she married Charles Harrison. They lived there and in Honesdale, Pa., until he died in 1983. She returned to the North Country in 1985. Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Ardisson of Bronx, N.Y.; three brothers, Edwin Sterling and his wife Rita of Rouses Point, Clyde Sterling of Mooers and Allen Sterling and his wife Sylvia of Kidder, Mo.; three sisters, Thelma DeRyke of Marysville, Wash., Mrs. Hubert (Joyce) Wells of Plattsburgh and Cora Hailey of Plattsburgh; two grandchildren, Rick and Lauren Ardisson; and one great-grandchild, Mariah Ardisson; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at a later date in the Ingraham Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society or the FitzPatrick Cancer Center. Rosemary SweetCHAZY LANDING — Rosemary Sweet, 70, of Lake Shore Road, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Rutland, Vt., on Feb. 18, 1934, the daughter of Frank and Biasina (Sestito) Wiggin. Rosemary worked for many years in the cafeteria at Chazy Central Rural School. She had many interests, which included gardening, the gift of cooking and the love of animals. These interests were only surpassed by her love of family and friends. Rosemary was predeceased by her husband, William M. Sweet. Survivors include her four children, Robin S. Brockway and her husband Walter Brockway of Knoxville, Tenn., William J. Sweet and his companion Sherl Drollette of Chazy Landing, Stacy E. Sweet of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Thomas W. Sweet and his wife Mary Jo Sweet of Chazy Landing; five grandchildren, Matthew Brockway, Courtney Sweet, Stetson Sweet, Alex Sweet and Jack Sweet; and her three cats, Teeney, Button and Willie. Calling hours will be held on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Funeral services and burial will take place in the spring in Ladd Family Cemetery. Walter, 88, of Prospect Avenue, passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center. She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on June 17, 1916, the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Lavarnway) Prunier. Anita was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125 Ladies Auxiliary, St. Peter's Church and the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Peter's Church. Most importantly, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Anita was predeceased by her husband, Diederich J. Walter; her parents; three brothers, Henry, George and Jules Prunier; a sister, Esther Thornton; several brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; a great-granddaughter, Hope D'Autorio; and a great-nephew, Scott Weber Wolter. She is survived by a son, David B. Walter and his wife Linda of Clarkesville, Ga.; a daughter, Mary Ann Cross of Plattsburgh; a granddaughter, Michelle A. (Cross) D'Autorio and her husband Louis of Basking Ridge, N.J.; a grandson, Aaron L. Walter and his wife Haley of Athens, Ga.; several brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 9 a.m. from St. Peter's Church. Interment will be at a later date in St. Peter's Cemetery. Friends wishing may make donations to the Scotts' Memorial Rink in Chazy, N.Y., or have Masses said in her memory. Members of the Rosary and Altar Society are asked to meet Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Members of the VFW Post 125 Ladies Auxiliary are asked to meet Sunday at 7 p.m. Lawrence Leo SmithEllenburg Center — Lawrence Leo Smith, 84, passed away with his very loving family by his bedside on Jan. 14, 2005. Born in Ellenburg Depot, N.Y., on Sept. 10, 1920, he was the son of Harry and Phyllis (Houle) Smith. Lawrence was married to Ula S. LaClair on Dec. 29, 1941, and happily married for 63 years. He owned and operated a dairy farm and worked construction for many years. He was a communicant of St. Edmund's Church, Ellenburg. He was the very loving father of 10 children, six sons and four daughters, Larry and JoAnn Smith of Canandaigua, N.Y., Eli and Donna Smith of Naples, N.Y., Brent and Cathy Smith of Ellenburg Center, N.Y., Randy and Janice Smith of Ellenburg Center, N.Y., Stewart and Sandy Smith of Ellenburg Center, N.Y., Larraine Smith of Greensburg, Ky., Lona Smith and her companion Ron Norman of Rushville, N.Y., Dale Ann and Rolland Magoon of Ellenburg Center, N.Y., and Debby Trombley of Ellenburg Center, N.Y.; 36 grandchildren; 39 great - grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Lillian Smith of Lyon Mountain, N.Y.; three sisters-in-law, Nora Smith of Ellenburg Corners, N.Y., Florence Smith of Ellenburg Depot, N.Y., and Odile LaClair of Churubusco, N.Y. He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Jeffrey Smith, on Sept. 29, 1998; two brothers, Wilfred and Clarence Smith; and a sister and brother-in-law, Clayda (Smith) and Patrick Malark. Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan. 16th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 17th, in St. Edmund’s Church with Rev. Joseph Wheelock officiating. Spring burial will take place at St. Edmund's Cemetery, Ellenburg. Donations in his memory may be made to the Ellenburg Fire Department or Hospice of the North Country. Mildred M. SampleMOOERS FORKS — Mildred "Millie" M. Sample left this world on Jan. 15, 2005, at the age of 85. She was the final child and daughter born to Amada and Anna (Bobbie) Gadway. Loosing her mom Anna at age 12, she was very close to and loved dearly her older sisters, Lena and Alma, who were her role models growing up. Millie worked for the families of Kenneth Holcombe Sr., and Anthony Gioiosa, both of Plattsburgh. She went on to work in Plattsburgh at the Pal Blade Company. She met and married the love of her life, Perry Royden Sample, on Sept. 30, 1944, who went on before her on Sept. 21, 1998. She attended St. Ann's parish in Mooers Forks, was a 25-plus year member of The Ladies of St. Ann's Society and a participant of the Mooers Grange. Partnered with Perry on the farm, Millie boiled (Fancy #1) maple syrup while cooking and baking for family gatherings and those who would just stop by. Her home was filled with her many personal touches; homemade quilts, embroidered needlepoint pillow cases, making a wonderful home for Perry and their two girls. Her first born daughter, Patricia Sample Bracey of Mooers Forks, Patricia's son Kelley "Little Perry," the extension of Mildred's heart and the gleam in her eye. Arriving later, a much younger daughter, Debra Sample Koenig and her husband John R. Koenig of Baldwin, Md. Mildred was the baby and final member of Amada's and Anna's children to depart, joining her two sisters Lena (Gadway) Hart and Alma (Gadway) Sample; and four brothers, Louis, Dennis, Leo and Lawrence Gadway. Since Millie was the baby of seven, she enjoyed her many and much loved extended family of nieces and nephews. You may stop by for viewing hours to see the family on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. The Ladies of St. Ann's will meet as a group at 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Millie will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Church in Mooers Forks. Burial will be in the parish cemetery in the spring. Donations in her memory will be distributed to the Cedar Hedge Nursing Home, St. Ann's/St. Joseph's parishes and Mooers Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Velora M. Goyette, 86, of Keystone Heights, Fla., died Jan. 15, 2005, at Bradford Terrace in Starke, Fla. She was born in Shoreman, Vt., on May 24, 1918. Visiting hours will be held on Monday at Jones Funeral Home, 340 E. Walker Dr., Keystone Heights, at 3:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at a later date. |
