Virginia Rose Smith

Ticonderoga — Former Ticonderoga Village Mayor, Virginia Rose Smith, who was known to her many friends and family throughout her entire long life as simply "Babe," left this world on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004. She was 86 years old. At the time of her death she was being cared for in the Interlakes Nursing Home in Ticonderoga.

She was born in Ticonderoga during the First World War on Oct. 8, 1918, to Frank and Guissepina (Scicchitano) Olivadotti, who came to America from Amaroni, Calabria, Italy, in 1912.

During the Great Depression, her parents owned the Burleigh House Hotel and Restaurant in Ticonderoga and later the Roma Restaurant, which she ran for many years with her husband, Paul, and where she was renowned as one of the best Italian chefs in the North Country.

Babe lead a very active life and was always involved in the Ticonderoga community. She was the first female life insurance agent in Northern New York and the first female mayor of the Village of Ticonderoga.

She attended Marymount College and graduated from Albany Business College in 1939. She played basketball, baseball and tennis while in high school and college. During World War II, she worked as a USO hostess in Albany and volunteered as a Red Cross nurse at Moses-Ludington Hospital. She also served as an air raid warden and a plane spotter.

Babe was a Democratic Party committee woman since 1960 and was very active in North Country politics for many years. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court of St. Mary’s 794 of Ticonderoga for over 50 years and gave many hours in support of St. Mary’s School and Church of Ticonderoga.

She was married to the late Paul Victor Smith, who died in 1990. She was also predeceased by one son, Frances "Smitty" Smith, who passed away in 1992; and by one sister, Mary Forsythe; and two brothers, Billy Labatore and Joe Lebretore.

Four of her five children and their spouses and her nine grandchildren survive her: Paul Victor Smith and his wife Anne of Chelmsford, Mass., and their children, Alan and David; Ann Tanyeri of Chelmsford, Mass., and her children, Bill, Aylin and Mete; William J. Smith and his wife Joanne of Wappingers Falls and their children, Marty and Karen; and Margaret Buer and her husband Gary of Cary, N.C., and their children, Karl and Darren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She is in Heaven now, but she will never be forgotten by all of the family and friends who loved her, laughed with her, argued and fought with her and always enjoyed her good cooking. If there is a God in Heaven, then Babe is there with him now.

Relatives and friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Ticonderoga. The Rev. William G. Muench, pastor, will officiate.
