John R. Fischer Sr.

Tupper Lake — John R. Fischer Sr., 67, of County Road 132A, Tupper Lake, died on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Clifton Springs Hospital.

John was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 23, 1937, a son of the late Rudolph and Catherine Fischer.

He had an extensive military career, drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956 for two years, then serving five years in the U.S. Navy and then transferring to the U.S. Army. He was a specialist in the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit and as a result traveled the world extensively and was involved in many unique experiences. He served his country during the Vietnam era, and was called back into active duty following his retirement to serve during Desert Storm.

He and his family moved from Germany to this area in 1975 where he was stationed at Seneca Army Depot, retiring as a master sergeant after 26 and one-half years of service to his country.

He had been a mason and a consultant to the Boy Scouts, and while living in this area, a member of the Ovid Veterans of Foreign War Post 6200, serving in the color guard.

John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gertrude; daughters, Kathryn Fischer of Willard and Linda (Frederick) Farnum of North Chili, N.Y.; a son, John R (Kelly) Fischer Jr. of Geneva; grandchildren, Sarah and Jonah Farnum, Jonathon Fischer and Timothy Osborne; a sister, Eileen Cullen of Stroudsburg, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, James E. Fischer.

Calling hours were held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid. A funeral service were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the Ovid Federated Church with Reverend Tony Roberts officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Union Cemetery in Ovid.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Ovid VFW Post 6200, P.O. Box 1, Ovid, NY 14521; Finger Lakes Cancer Center 6 Coulter Drive, Clifton Springs, NY, 14432 or Hepatitis Foundation International, 30 Sunrise Terrace, Cedar Grove, NJ 07009.

Virginia Rose Smith, 86, of Champlain Avenue, Ticonderoga, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at the Moses-Ludington Nursing Home of Ticonderoga.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga.

Keith C. Hogle, 92, of Mooers, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements were incomplete Wednesday evening at the E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Mooers.

JOHN L. JENKINS, 66, of Main Street, Lake Placid, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 at the Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, N.Y.

He was born in Syracuse, N.Y, Aug. 22, 1938, the son of Edwin and Eleanor (Rutkowski) Jenkins.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate John’s life at 4 p.m. Friday at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. The Rev. Dale Demary will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Donations in John’s memory may be made to High Peaks Hospice, P.O. Box 840, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
