Dorothy Y. Miller

Saranac Lake — Dorothy Y. Miller, 85, of 94 Glenwood Drive in Saranac Lake, N.Y., died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at the home of her daughter Joan Donaldson.

Born in Fort Smith, Ark., on April 16, 1919, she was the daughter of Simon and Rachel (Getzler) Yaffee.

Mrs. Miler had been a life-long resident of Fort Smith until moving to Saranac lake to live with her daughter Joan in 2000. She and her husband Theodore "Ted" Miller were the owners and operators of the Eagle Clothing Store on Garrison Avenue in Fort Smith for over 50 years. Together, the two of them traveled to all of the 50 United States and many of the Providence’s of Canada and visited many countries throughout Europe and Asia. During the 1960's and 1970's both Dorothy and Ted were very active in the Fort Smith Little Theater with Ted working behind the scenes and Dorothy relishing her parts on stage especially in comedy productions.

Under Dorothy's encouragement, the entire Miller family became active in Girl Scouting. Mrs. Miller served in every capacity from troop leader to president of the Mount Magazine Girl Scout Council in Fort Smith. One of her greatest achievements was seeing both of her daughters receive the highest rank in Girl Scouting. One of her greatest accomplishments during her 50 year association with the Mount Magazine Council was the acquisition of property and the construction of Camp Cahinnio in Booneville, Ark. In honor of her years of dedicated volunteer service to Girl Scouting, Mrs. Miller was awarded life membership in the Girl Scouts of America.

While Mrs. Miller’s children were attending public school in Fort Smith, she was always an active member of the PTA and served as president of the PTA of Ballman Elementary School and Ramsey Junior High School.

Dorothy and her husband Ted were avid bowlers and belonged to various leagues in the Fort Smith area. They were also active member of the United Commercial Travelers Association (UCT) of Fort Smith.

Mrs. Miller was a life-long member of the United Hebrew Congregation of Fort Smith. She was an active member and past president of the Temple Sisterhood and was a long-time member of the Temple's Board of Directors. In the mid 1970's, Mrs. Miller served as the first woman president of the United Hebrew Congregation.

Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her husband of 55 year, Theodore A. Miller.

She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Stodghill and her husband Ben of Seattle, Wash., and Joan Donaldson and her husband Cliff of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Amy, Dorothy and Ted Stodghill and Aaron Donaldson; and a great-grandson, Kaeden Lee. She leaves behind her sister, Helen Held of Montgomery, Ala.; and two nephews, Dana Robertson and his wife Sharee of Houston, Texas and Roger Held and his wife Kate of Baltimore, Md.; along with three great-nieces, Sarah Fett of Springfield, Mass., and Rachel and Miranda Held of Baltimore, Md.

Friends may call from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at the Ocker- Putnam Funeral Home in Fort Smith, Ark. A graveside service will immediately follow at the United Hebrew Cemetery in Fort Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends wishing to remember Mrs. Miller make memorial contributions to the Mount Magazine Girl Scout Council in care of the Ocker-Putnam Funeral Home 4500 Jenny Lind Road, Fort Smith, AR 72901; or to High Peaks Hospice, Inc., PO Box 840 Saranac Lake, N.Y.

Leonard F. Mayville Jr.

WITHERBEE, N.Y. — Leonard F. (Len) Mayville Jr., passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife Annie and family on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, after a lengthy fight to overcome his illness.

Len was born the son of Leonard and Dorothy (Smith) Mayville in Witherbee, N.Y., on July 1, 1937.

He attended Mineville High School and graduated in 1955. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force serving for four years. When Len returned home he went to work at Republic Steel Corporation until it closed and then for Aubuchon Hardware for 26 years, serving as assistant manager in the Port Henry store and then manager at the Elizabethtown store until he was forced to retire due to health problems. Len was a greeter at the Church of All Saints in Mineville for the past few years and was always available donating his time to help the ladies of the Alter Rosary Society clean the church two or three times a year.

Len is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Annie; and five stepchildren, Dianne, Eddie, Steve, Jeff and Wendy; seven grandchildren, AmyJo, Nicole, Tanya, Melissa, Kimberly, Carla and Robert; two great-grandchildren, Jazmin and Tyler. He is also survived by a nephew, George Mayville Jr. and his wife, Pam; two great-nieces, Heather and Krystal of Willianson, W. Va.; a niece, Susan Fought and her husband Rex from Kentucky; and a dear sister-in-law, Corinia Mayville of Williamson, W. Va.

He will be sadly missed by his family as well as many nieces and nephews and his many friends who all knew and loved him for his wonderful outgoing personality.

Len was predeceased by his mother and father; and only brother, George Mayville Sr.

Family and friends may pay their respects at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Church of All Saints, Mineville, N.Y.

Gracia Bishop

CLAREMONT, N.H. — The Rev. Gracia June Campbell Bishop, retired, 81, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at New London Hospital after a short bout with pneumonia. In 2002, she became a resident at Woodlawn Nursing Home, Newport. Previously, she had been a resident of Claremont since 1986.

She was born on Sept. 30, 1923, in Boston, daughter of Rev. Harold and Gracia (Greenwood) Campbell.

In 1949, she married the Rev. Robert F. Bishop at the First Baptist Church in Claremont.

Rev. Bishop and her husband graduated from Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Center, Mass., in 1951.

Her career in the ministry spanned half a century. She pastored or co-pastored more than 30 churches in New York and New England, including parishes in Wolfeboro, N.H., a multiple parish at Lyndon Center, Sutton and Sheffield, Vt., Lincoln, Vt., Willsboro, N.Y., Wadhams, N.Y., and Rensselaer, N.Y. Retiring in 1983, she continued to serve as interim and supply minister at numerous churches including N. Sutton and Concord, N.H., and a duo ministry with her husband at Hartland, Vt.

Friends and family will remember her for her faith in God, her love and kindness toward others and her love of language and poetry.

She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Robert Bishop in 1999.

Survivors include a sister, Alta (Campbell) Gras and her husband Edwin Gras, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and their children, Robert and Carole; two sons, Dr. Robert C. Bishop and his wife Karen of Newport with sons Brian, Joshua and Jonathan and Major James G. Bishop, USAF, and his wife Debby of Colorado Springs with children James, Andrea and Jason.

Calling hours will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Roy Funeral Home, 93 Sullivan Street, Claremont, N.H. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at South Congregational Church in Newport with the Rev. Craig MacCreary, pastor, officiating. Committal services will follow in Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Congregational Church c/o Tracey Bailey, 20 Church Street, Newport, N.H. 03773, designated to the Deacon's Fund.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Roy Funeral Home.

Roland Hauf

SARANAC — Roland "Rollie" Hauf, 71, a summer resident of Saranac, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Haines City, Fla., after a short illness.

Rollie was born June 21, 1933, in Albany, the son of Frederick and Marion (Engel) Hauf.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of the American Legion Post 504 of AuSable Forks. Rollie loved the outdoors enjoying fishing and hunting and his favorite sport, golfing. He also was a member of the Indole Golf Course of AuSable Forks.

Rollie was a retired member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union 83 of Albany.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Survived by his wife, Sandra Hauf of Saranac; two sons, Michael Hauf of Saranac and Stephen Hauf of Plattsburgh; two stepsons, Mark Smith of Morrisonville and Matthew Smith of Essex Junction, Vt.; four grandchildren, Katie Hauf, Cory Smith, Kalee Smith and Jonathan Smith; and his former wife, Mary Van Der Veer of Clifton Park.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post 504, AuSable Forks. Burial will follow the service at Fairview Cemetery, AuSable Forks. Immediately following the committal service, the family will receive relatives and friends at the American Legion Post 504 for refreshments and a time of remembrance.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the North Country, Plattsburgh or the American Cancer Society, envelopes will be available at the reception. Arrangements are with the Zaumetzer - Sprague Funeral Home.

Velma A. Swiatowicz, 83, of Plattsburgh, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements were incomplete Monday evening at the O'Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

Hildegard Lefebvre, 69, formally of Chazy died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in Rouses Point.

There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Coopersville. The date and time of the burial will be announced in the spring by M.B. Clark Funeral Home, Champlain, N.Y.
