Peter A. Polhemus

Plattsburgh — Mr. Peter A. Polhemus, 55, of Michaele Avenue, Plattsburgh, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born in Plattsburgh on July 29, 1949, the son of Charles and Gladys (LaValley) Polhemus.

Peter retired from the Clinton County Department of Social Services. He enjoyed playing country music with the Glen Miller and the Daniels Bands with Pete Wilson and numerous other bands. Peter had worked at WIRY Radio in the 1970s, where he was known as Pete Wilson’s Caravan. He and his brother co-owned and operated the Korina Lounge in the 1970s. He enjoyed remodeling and carpentry.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Gladys Polhemus; a brother, Bruyn Polhemus; and his sisters, Sylvia Ann Bethel and Maryellen M. Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Debra M. (Stevens) Polhemus of Plattsburgh; his children, Cristi Wells and her husband Chase of Plattsburgh, Brad Polhemus and his wife Kim of Plattsburgh, Roy T. Armstrong and his wife Danielle of Syracuse, Jessica Armstrong of Plattsburgh and Pierre Andre "PJ" Polhemus II of Plattsburgh; his sisters, Jacqueline Clarke of Schuyler Falls and Kathi Latour and her husband Walter of Plattsburgh; his brothers; Paul "Doc" Polhemus of Plattsburgh and Terry Polhemus and his wife Dee of Plattsburgh; his grandchildren, Corinne and Colin Wells, Brandon Aylsworth, Morgan and Mason Polhemus and Celeste Armstrong; his best friend, Wade Stevenson of Plattsburgh; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. from the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. from Our Lady of Victory Church. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Friends wishing may make donations to the family or a charity of one’s choice.

Flora M. Hammond

PLATTSBURGH — Flora M. Hammond, 72, of Monty Street, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center.

She was born in Plattsburgh on March 20, 1932, the daughter of Hector and Florence (Blanchard) Bouvia.

She was the wife of John S. Hammond, who died in 1999.

Survivors include her son, Schuyler W. Hammond of Plattsburgh; one daughter, Deborah Bowyer and her husband Earl of Richmond, Va.; her mother, Florence Buttignoli of Plattsburgh; one sister, Carolyn LaBounty and her husband Paschal of Plattsburgh; five grandchildren, Jessica and Matthew Hammond and Jamie, Jeramie and Logan Bowyer; six great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Private calling hours and funeral services are being held for the family.

Burial will be in Cadyville Protestant Cemetery.

Helen S. Billings

Plattsburgh — Helen S. Billings, 87, of Michelle Avenue, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Evergreen Valley Nursing Home.

She was born in Plattsburgh on March 16, 1917, the daughter of Fred and Sophrinie (Tellstone) Sumner.

She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church.

Helen was married to Bill Billings until his death in 1978.

She worked at Pal Blade for 20 years and for the following 10 years worked as a waitress at Howard Johnson in Plattsburgh during the summer and taught knitting in Florida in the winter. Following that, Helen was happily employed as a beloved morning waitress at the Holiday Inn for 27 years. She retired in 1994 at the age of 77.

During her retirement, Helen provided home care assistance to various individuals for four years. She was a former member of the order of the Eastern Star. Helen enjoyed knitting and made hundreds of mittens and booties for the Salvation Army.

Helen is survived by one sister, Beulah Bates of Plattsburgh.

She was predeceased by one son, Baby Charles Sibly; two brothers, Charles Sumner and Ralph Sumner; and one sister, Irene MacAvavaney.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

Joan M. Conway

CADYVILLE — Joan M. Conway, 72, of Hardscrabble Road, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center.

She was born in Rosendale, N.Y., the daughter of Eugene and Anna (Dickeson) Galvin.

Joan received her R.N. in 1953 and a bachelor of science in 1955 from Jersey City State Teachers College.

She married William J. Conway in 1956 at St. Peter’s Church in Rosendale, N.Y.

Joan was a clinical instructor at St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in Newburgh, N.Y. She was later a clinical instructor at Hudson Valley Psychiatric Hospital School of Nursing and a charge nurse at Vassar Hospital, both in Poughkeepsie, until her retirement in 1985.

Joan was a member of St. James Minor Church in Cadyville and the choir director.

She was also a member of the Jersey City Medical Center Alumni Association and a past medical officer of Dutchess County Track Officials and Coaches Association.

Survivors include her husband, William J. Conway of Cadyville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael Conway of Wallkill, N.Y., Peter and Patricia Conway of Acton, Mass., and Matthew and Susanna Conway of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Anne Marie Conway of Norton, Mass.; one brother, John S. Buckley of Wakefield, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Catherine, Margaret, Ellen Marie, Patrick, Nicole, Alexander and Kelly Conway.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. The Knights of Columbus 6067 will meet for services at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. James Minor Church in Cadyville.

Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Donations may be made to the St. James Minor Church Memorial Fund.

MaryAnn Romeo

Plattsburgh — MaryAnn Romeo, 89, formerly of Olivetti Place, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Martin Luther Home in Clinton, N.Y.

She was born in Schenectady on April 14, 1915, the daughter of Anthony and Josephine (Norek) Zalen.

MaryAnn was a graduate from the Albany Business College. She was a member of St. John’s Church and an officer of the Catholic Daughters of America. She also was a member of the Lions Club Auxiliary, the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and helped start the Fresh Air Program for disadvantaged children in Plattsburgh.

MaryAnn married Thomas L. Romeo on June 17, 1939, in Schenectady. Tom died in 1993.

MaryAnn worked for the Department of Labor for 15 years, for Dan Ryan in the Clinton County Treasurer’s Office for 12 years and at the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base as a bookkeeper for eight years. She then took a job with the Marriott Food Service at SUNY Plattsburgh, working until she was 80 years old.

Survivors include one son, John T. "Jack" Romeo of Tampa, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Stephen Havens of Sauquoit, N.Y.; three grandchildren, John Mark Romeo, Stephanie Havens and Skylar Havens; and one great-granddaughter, Marin Isabella Romeo.

She was predeceased by three sisters and an infant son, Timothy Romeo.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

A Mass of Christian burial will follow at St. John’s Church at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Cardiac Care Unit at the CVPH Medical Center or the S.F. Vilas Home, 63 Beekman St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901.

William James Penner

Plattsburgh — William James Penner, 69, of Bell Road, Plattsburgh, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at his home.

He was born in Taftville, Conn., Sept. 16, 1935, the son of William and Sara Marie (Hiebert) Penner.

Mr. Penner was a graduate of Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., and received his doctorate from the University of Connecticut.

He was a professor at Plattsburgh State University.

He has battled failing health for some time and is now at peace.

He is survived by a sister, Amy Irene (Penner) Stroud, of Brunswick, Maine.

Arrangements are by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru.

Veronica H. Jette

Plattsburgh — Veronica H. Jette, 82, of Plattsburgh, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Riverview on June 15, 1922, the daughter of Harry and Lillian (Charbonneau) Gilmet.

She graduated from Sallaz Academy in 1939, attended the Plattsburgh Business Institute and completed business courses at the College of St. Rose in Albany.

She owned and operated Ronnie’s Michigans in West Plattsburgh for over 27 years until her retirement in 1986.

She was a member of St. Alexander’s Church in Morrisonville and was a former parish trustee. She was also a former member of the St. Alexander’s Altar-Rosary Society and the Dannemora Catholic Daughters of the Americas, American Legion Post 1619 Ladies Auxiliary, the Ladies of St. Joseph, the Associates of the Sacred Heart and the Our Lady of the Adirondacks House of Prayer in Ellenburg.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Vickie Jette of Morrisonville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jane Marie and John Spassoff of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jacqueline Kelly of Malone; a brother, Francis Gilmet of Redford; a sister, Lita Vann of Redford; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Bill Jette, whom she married Dec. 23, 1943, died on Sept. 11, 1961; and a son, Gerard Jette, died on May 25, 1986. Two brothers, Antoine and Lawrence Gilmet; and three sisters, Theresa Brewer, Rita Lehane and Rose Deno, also died earlier.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the O’Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday from St. Alexander’s Church in Morrisonville. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the FitzPatrick Cancer Center or Hospice of the North Country.

David E. Fayette

Smithville, Tenn. — David E. Fayette, 58, of Smithville, Tenn., died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the Nashville Baptist Hospital after an extended illness.

He was the owner of Dave’s Alignment Shop in Smithville. He was a member of the Jehovah Witnesses.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Fayette, of Smithville; three children, Paul David Fayette, Matthew David Fayette and Tamara Lynn Paulsen, all of Smithville; three grandchildren, Zaxtin Fayette, Celebra Brooke Fayette and Dustin Tyler Hutchins; one brother, Norman Fayette of New York; five sisters, Nancy Lamar, Carol Kipp, Brenda Behan, Judy Bombard and Connie Consetta Dashnaw, all of New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Howard and Beatrice Katherine (Tamer) Fayette.

Visitation will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Smithville on Friday from 6 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 7 p.m., officiated by Kenneth Cabral.

Arrangements are with the DeKalb Funeral Chapel in Smithville.

Philip G. Kramer, 91, of Spear Hill Road, Merrill, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 16, 1913, the son of John and Anna (Conrad) Kramer.

Calling hours will be held at Chateaugay Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday in St. Patrick's Church with Rev. John Demo officiating. Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chateaugay.

Duncan Alexander Morris, age 15 days, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.

He was born in Saranac Lake on Oct. 14, 2004, the son of Allison Simonson and Nicholas Morris.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

The Fortune-Keough Funeral Home of Saranac Lake is in charge of arrangements.
