Published: 10/5/04Lucille GroganPLATTSBURGH — Lucille Grogan, 86, formerly of Phillips Court, Lyon Mountain died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home, Plattsburgh, N.Y., where she had been a resident since Oct. 2, 2000. She was born in Malone, N.Y., on Nov. 14, 1917, the daughter of Charles and Melvina (Patenaude) South. She was married to Daniel Grogan on Jan. 21, 1936, in Notre Dame Church, Malone. He predeceased her on July 4, 1979. Mrs. Grogan is survived by two daughters and sons-in- law, Mary and Robert Pageau of Lyon Mountain, N.Y., and Patricia and Michael Breen of Pomfret Center, Conn.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bernard and Carol Grogan of Lyon Mountain, N.Y., and James Grogan and his companion, Barbara Rodriguez of Lyon Mountain, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Lynne Sheehan, Jeffrey Pageau, Jay and Tammie Pageau, Mark Breen, Sandra and Michael Fredrickson, Jacqueline and Dan Bellervie, Gregg Breen, Stephen and Mia Breen, Michael Grogan and Barry Grogan; 12 great-grandchildren, Heather and Courtney Sheehan, Kristie and Jason Pageau, Sean, Meghan and Rose Breen, Kate and Molly Fredrickson, Sarah and Matthew Bellervie and Aaron Breen; a sister-in-law, Eileen Kaska; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves her loving, extended family at Meadowbrook Health Care. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Lillian Bow; and three brothers, Kenneth, Francis and Donald South. Mrs. Grogan graduated from Franklin Academy, Malone. She retired from Marriot Food Services, Plattsburgh State University. She was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church, Lyon Mountain, a charter member of Court Our Lady of the Snows 1548. She was also a member of Sorrell Woodward Post 1623, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125 Auxiliary, Merry Lyoneers Senior Citizens, Lyon Mountain Fire Department Auxiliary and a CVPH Volunteer. Calling hours will be held at the Lyon Mountain Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6 in St. Bernard’s Church with Rev. Donald Kramburg of St. Joseph's Church, Dannemora officiating. Burial will take place at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Lyon Mountain. Donations in her memory may be made to Lyon Mountain Rescue Squad or Meadowbrook Activity Fund. Arrangements are through the Chateaugay Funeral Home. Helen P. NewbeginChamplain — Helen P. Newbegin, 90, of Champlain died Sunday, October 3, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Norway, Maine, on Sept. 4, 1914, the daughter of Arthur and Ethel (Brown) Parker. She graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington and was a home economics teacher for many years. She enjoyed sewing and cooking and was a foster mother to over a dozen babies. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Gaye Newbegin of East Berne, N.Y., and David and Brenda Newbegin of Essex, Conn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Rob McDowell of Plattsburgh; a nephew and his wife, Gene and Joyce Mitchell; a niece, Judy Knight, all of South Paris, Maine; seven grandchildren, Adam, Heather and Robin Newbegin, Damian, Brooke and Parker Stafford and David McDowell; and numerous cousins. Her husband, John L. Newbegin died in 2000; and sister, Dorothy Mitchell died in 1999. There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at a time to be announced. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. The E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Champlain is in charge of arrangements. Lillian L. McDonaldPlattsburgh — Mrs. Lillian L. McDonald, 82, of Champlain Street, Plattsburgh, passed into the arms of Jesus and her beloved mother, sister and dear friend Sara Sorrell, Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born in Winooski, Vt., on Oct. 21, 1921, the daughter of Hormidas and Nettie (Robare) LaVallee. Lillian was a graduate of Cadyville High School Class of 1940. She was assistant matron at the Clinton County Jail under Sheriff Elmer Caron. Lillian was a diet cook at the convalescent hospital at the Plattsburgh Barracks. She was a mixalogist for over 30 years. Lillian was a Delta Kappa Mother at SUNY Plattsburgh and was president of the Champlain Valley Pool League for three years. She was a member of St. Peter's Church, a member of the liturgical committee, the activities committee, the Rosary and Altar Society. Lillian was a Sacristan of the Church and worked bingo at St. Peter's. She was a member of the American Legion Post 1619 Ladies Auxiliary serving as vice president and treasurer. She was also a historian of the County Legion, the fourth district color guard. Lillian was a member of the 8 & 40 Chapeau. In her later years she worked as a volunteer at the Salvation Army. She was predeceased by her parents, Hormidas and Nettie LaVallee; her husband, Cleland S. McDonald Sr.; a sister, Claudia Bouyea and her husband Carl. She is survived by her son, Cleland S. McDonald Jr. and his wife Sandra of Morrisonville; a daughter Rose Marie Jones and her husband Frank of Morrisonville; a grandson, Bruce J. McDonald of New York City; her granddaughters, Paula Vincent of Plattsburgh, Leigh Carter of Chazy, Shelley Laurin of Champlain, Kathy Philips of Ellabell, Ga., Carla Cross of Cleveland, Tenn., and Jeannie Jabaut of Morrisonville; 10 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. from St. Peter's Church. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dannemora. Friends wishing may make donations to Alzheimer's Research or St. Peter's Altar Fund. Lucia Ann LaPortePlattsburgh — Mrs. Lucia Ann "Lu" LaPorte, 52, of the Town Line Road, West Chazy, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Springville on Aug. 31, 1952, daughter of Richard F. and Ann (Frost) Jasinski. Lucia had worked as a home health aid for 17 years, the last 10 being with the North Country Home Services. She was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving from 1977 to 1983. Lu loved nature spending time camping, fishing, four wheeling, boating, bird watching and enjoying the view of nature. She is survived by her husband, Joseph LaPorte; one son, Richard Perales and his fiancé Amy Davis of Winooski, Vt.; one daughter, Emma Miner and her husband Randy of Albany; one sister, Lois Maj and her husband Michael of Springville; two brothers, Dan Jasinski and his wife Jean of Angola and Richard C. Jasinski and his wife Susan of Buffalo; her grandmother, Annette Frost of Hamburg; two grandchildren, Kaylee Ann Miner of Albany and Elizabeth Ruth Miner of Albany; one stepson, Jason LaPorte of West Chazy; two stepdaughters, Tricia LaPorte of West Chazy and Tracie LaPorte of West Chazy; her mother-in-law, Rosemary LaPorte of Plattsburgh; two brothers-in-law, John LaPorte and his wife Diana of Herkimer and Mark LaPorte and his wife Maryellen of Plattsburgh, a sister-in-law, Belinda McKenna and her husband Pat of Peru; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Frances PillerPlattsburgh — Mrs. Frances Piller, 86, of the Burnt Hill Road in Saranac, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Long Island City on March 18, 1918, daughter of the late Jerry and Anna (Suchanik) Sedlack. Frances was a member of the U.M.W. for 24 years. She and her husband were dancers with the Polar Squares. She loved to sing, gardening and needlework. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Catherine Piller of Saranac, Steven and Veronica Piller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Daniel and Janice Piller of Saranac; one sister, Mildred Koester of Long Island; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Frances is predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Joseph; one sister, Blanche Gondin, and a brother, Joseph Posik. Calling hours will be Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Cadyville. Donations in her memory may be made to the Saranac Ambulance Squad. Bryant L. LaBrake, 49, of State Route 30, Malone, N.Y., died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He was born in Malone, on Sept. 15, 1955, the son of Charles and Bertha Barcomb LaBrake Sr. Calling hours will be Friday, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home, in Malone. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will in St. Joseph's Cemetery on the Lake Titus Road, Malone. Richard Allen, 76, of Sawyer Ave., and formerly of Cherry Street, Malone, N.Y., died Sunday Oct. 3, 2004, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington, Vt. He was born in Malone, N.Y., Jan. 19, 1928, the son of the late Andrew and Melvina Burdash Allen. Calling hours will be Thursday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church in Malone. Burial will be in the Morningside Cemetery in Malone. Richard J. Burnell, 75, of Ivy Terrace died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the Mercy Healthcare Center. He was born June 13, 1929, in Newton Falls, N.Y., the son of Benjamin John and Emma Iris (Welsh) Burnell. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the Richer Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass at St. Alphonsus Church will be held on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. An honor guard service will be held following Mass. Graveside services will be held following cremation at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. |
