Published: 10/1/04Nona M. BrownPlattsburgh — Nona M. Brown, 68, of Lakeview Towers, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born in Plattsburgh on Feb. 21, 1936, the daughter of Levi and Leona (Lucia) Sorrell. Nona enjoyed baking, cooking and decorating wedding cakes. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Nona was a member of St. Peter's Church. She was predeceased by her parents, Levi and Leona Sorrell; and her brothers, Ronald and Daniel Sorrell. Nona is survived by her sons, Gerald Brown Jr. of Plattsburgh, Michael Brown and his wife Cindy of Plattsburgh and Harvey Brown and his wife Tammy of Morrisonville; her daughters, Tanya Devins and her husband Gordon of West Chazy, Rebecca Alexander and her husband Michael of Plattsburgh; her companion of 34 years, Marvin Brown of Plattsburgh; her sisters, Sonya Fallaw of Waco, Texas, Mrs. Wayne (Evelyn) Cook of Morrisonville, Judith Sorrell-Lynch of Cadyville, Mrs. Bill (Karen) Rager of Mexico, and Juliet Cook of Plattsburgh; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Kevin and Nora Sorrell of Downington, Pa., and Levi and Abby Sorrell of New Jersey; 15 grandchildren; four great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday from Our Lady of Victory Church. Entombment will follow at the Whispering Maples Mausoleum. Friends wishing may make donations to her family. Marvin (Marv) GenoPlattsburgh — Mr. Marvin (Marv) Geno, 75, of Route 3, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Plattsburgh on March 10, 1929, the son of William and Viola (Lashway) Geno. Marvin attended Our Lady of Victory Academy. In 1948 he joined the U.S. Army 185th Combat Engineers, serving 15 months in Korea and was in five battles at Inchon Landing, returning in 1951 as a sergeant first class. Marvin's career spanned the next 38 years as a self-employed contractor, until his retirement in 1989. Marvin enjoyed exploring the Adirondacks and countryside always curious to see what was over the next hill. Marvin was a member of the Saranac Fiddlers Club and St. Joseph's Church in Treadwells Mills. Marvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Marvin was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Beulah Ducatte. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Opal (Burt) Geno; a son, Robert Geno and his wife Robyn; granddaughter Shelby; two daughters, Linda Mahar and Judy VanTilburg and her husband Bryan and granddaughter Alexis; grandchildren Sean Mahar and his wife Colleen, Dena (Mahar) Thompson and her husband Chad; two great - grandchildren, Aidan and Lucas Mahar; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday from St. Joseph's Church in Treadwells Mills. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Friends wishing may have Masses said in his memory. Helene E. CohenPlattsburgh — Ms. Helene E. Cohen, 84, of Meadowbrook Health Care Facility and formerly Terrace West, passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Plattsburgh on July 19, 1920, daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Cohen. Helene graduated from Plattsburgh High School and also graduated from a business/secretarial school in Plattsburgh. She was employed by her father, Samuel Cohen, at the Fit-Rite Shop for a number of years, for a short time at Merkel's Department Store and for a period of years she operated her own boutique, the Helene Elise Shop on Clinton Street. For the past two years she has been a resident of the Meadowbrook Health Care Facility. Helene is survived by one sibling, Joyce, of Toronto, Canada. A graveside service will be held at noon Friday from Temple Beth Israel Cemetery in Plattsburgh, where Rabbi David Steinberg will officiate. Donations in Helene's memory may be made to Temple Beth Israel. Sue M. PaulHolland, Ind. — Sue M. Paul of Holland, Ind., formerly of Chazy Lake, died Sept. 7, 2004, in Evansville, Ind., after an extremely courageous battle with cancer. She is an inspiration to all of us for the strength and determination she demonstrated during her fight. She was a psychiatric registered nurse devoting her entire professional life to those with mental illnesses. She was instrumental in research at Yale University in Connecticut, the V.A. hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., and in Middletown, Conn. She ended her career as nurse manager of the adult unit at Deaconess Crosspoint Hospital in Evansville, Ind. She graduated from Lyon Mountain High School, attended State University at Cobleskill and graduated from Champlain Valley School of Nursing in 1974. She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., to the late Bill and Betty Paul. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Mike Paul. She is survived by two sisters, Connie and Ricky DesRocher of Chazy Lake, N.Y., and Jean and Cary Ambrose of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two brothers, Bruce Paul of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Charlie and Patricia Paul of Columbus, Ga. She is also survived by a much loved and very special niece, Krysti DesRocher of Chazy Lake, along with nieces Sarah and Samantha and three nephews, Eric DesRocher and companion Danielle Barnaby of Chazy Lake, Frank Tryan and Doug Ambrose of Indiana. Sue is also survived by very special friends, Carol and Ernie Haddad of Connecticut, Buddy and Jenniefier, Tyler and John Haddad of Indiana. A Mass in Sue's memory will be held at St. Bernard’s Church in Lyon Mountain at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Sue's memory. John S. StockwellLYON MOUNTAIN — John S. Stockwell, 17, of Standish Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at his home. He was born in Plattsburgh on Jan. 5, 1987, the son of John B. and Nancy (LaBarge) Stockwell. John was a student at Northern Adirondack Central School. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and hunting. Survivors include his parents, John and Nancy Stockwell of Lyon Mountain; one brother, James Stockwell of Lyon Mountain; his maternal grandfather, Dale LaBarge and his wife Lori of Lyon Mountain; his maternal grandmother, Isabelle LaBarge of Plattsburgh; four aunts, Tammy Lashway of Plattsburgh, Elizabeth and Johnny Wheeler of Chazy, Kelly LaBarge of Lyon Mountain and Sherry LaBarge of North Carolina; and four uncles, Charles and Anita Stockwell of Germany, David and Patty Stockwell of California, John and Katrina LaBarge of Chazy Lake and William LaBarge of Lyon Mountain. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Beverly and Edward Stockwell; and his maternal great-grandparents, John and Mildred Petrashune. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lyon Mountain Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at noon Sunday at St. Bernard’s Church in Lyon Mountain. Memorial donations may be made to the family. The R.W. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Marcia A. St. LouisVernon, N.Y. — Marcia A. St. Louis, 42, of Beaver Meadow Road, died unexpectedly on Sept. 28, 2004, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital from complications of childbirth. She was born on Sept. 22, 1962, in Queens, N.Y., a daughter of Sigmund and Janet (Lichtbach) Schwartz and received her primary education in the Bronx school system and later graduated from Adelphi University with a bachelor of science degree in medical technology. Marcia and Jeffery St. Louis were united in marriage on Jan. 30, 1988, in Catskill, N.Y. Marcia was a member of Holy Family Parish, Vernon. Marcia had a love for music; she enjoyed attending concerts and gave clarinet lessons to her children. Most of all Marcia loved being a mother and a wife. She had a special bond with each of her children that only a mother could have. Surviving are her husband Jeffery; four daughters, Michelle, Susan, Sharon and Julia; her son Joshua; her parents, Sigmund and Janet Schwartz of Bronx, N.Y.; her sister Karen and brother-in-law David Friedman of Brick, N.J.; her maternal grandmother, Anne Lichtbach of Denver, Colo.; and her father-in-law, Leonard St. Louis of Queensbury, N.Y. Marcia was predeceased by her daughter, Emily Rose St. Louis, on Aug. 10, 2001. Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front St., at the corner of N. Sconondoa St., Vernon. Marcia's Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Church, Peterboro Street, Vernon, with pastor Rev. Richard Morisette celebrant. Burial will be in St. Helena's Cemetery, Middle Road, Oneida, N.Y. Kathleen "Katy" TorranceAuSable Forks — Kathleen "Katy" Torrance, 86, died Sept. 28, 2004. Katy was born in Jay, N.Y., on Nov. 10, 1917, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Geary) Wilkins. Katy retired from Key Bank in the mid-1980s. She thoroughly enjoyed life and was a world traveler. In her younger years she was an avid bowler, enjoying many trips to state bowling tournaments. Katy was predeceased by her husband Edwin in 1998; and a son Bruce in 1985. Family members include a son, Lee and his wife Jackie (Hearn); two granddaughters, Meredith and Kallie Torrance; a brother-in-law, David Torrance; and a niece, Patty Coolidge. Calling hours will be held at Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Jay Central Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the AuSable Forks Ambulance Service or the AuSable Forks Free Library. Geraldine R. Barber, 92, formerly of State Route 22, West Chazy, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She was born in Chazy, N.Y., on Oct. 25, 1911, the daughter of John and Daisy (LaPlante) Luck. There will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Rev. Harry Giroux, pastor, at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Church in West Chazy. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. The R.W. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments. |
