Bertha F. Martin

ELIZABETHTOWN — Bertha F. Martin, 93, of Elizabethtown died Friday Aug. 27 at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born one of eight children on September 6, 1910, in Elizabethtown, the daughter of Nelson and Agnes (Nolette) Fleury.

Bertha lived the majority of her life in Daytona Beach, Fla., where she worked as a pediatric nurse at Halifax Medical Center. During the last year she lived with her daughter Jane in Elizabethtown before spending the last three months at the Keene Valley Neighborhood House.

Bertha is survived by two daughters; Jane Scriver Bartlett of Elizabethtown, Julia Scriver Thurman of Daytona Beach, Florida and two stepchildren; Wilba Strong of New Russia, N.Y., and Raymond Martin of Columbia City, Ind. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Gay Olcott, Timothy Drummond, Beth Marvin, Patrick Thurman, Lisa Russell, Robert Thurman and 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Martin.

Calling hours will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at W.M. Marvins Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A funeral Mass and celebration of her life will be conducted by Father Peter Rianni on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Keene Valley neighborhood House, Keene Valley, NY 12943.

Mary "Nan" Kirkcaldy

WILMINGTON — Mary "Nan" Kirkcaldy, 97, passed into the arms of the Lord on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, where she had been a resident since March 27, 1998.

Nan was born in Armonk on June 22, 1907, the daughter of Albert and Lulu (Goodhart) Sarles. She was employed at Woolworths store in White Plains for several years. She was a Sunday school teacher for several years in Pleasantville and she was the oldest of 13 children. She moved here in 1972 to be with her daughter and son-in-law Babe and Dorothy Adams of Wilmington.

She is survived by a son, David Kirkcaldy of California, a daughter, Dorothy Adams of Wilmington; a sister, Shirley Sarles; two brothers, David Sarles and Richard Sarles. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Carol Gallagher, Phillip Noel, Raymond Noel, Cathy LaMarque, Kelly Adams, Allison Rau, Geoffrey Rau, Cynthia, Diane and Janice Kirkcaldy. Several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive her.

Nan was a loving and compassionate mother and grandmother and companion to all. She was predeceased by her husband, David Kirkcaldy, and a daughter, Isabelle Ross.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home, and a short prayer service will follow the calling hours.

Burial will be in the family plot beside her husband at the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. Memorials to her may be made to Alzheimer’s disease or American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the Funeral Home.

Paul M. Stata

PLATTSBURGH — Paul M. Stata, 73, of Plattsburgh, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at his home on Cumberland Head.

He was born on Feb. 23, 1931, in Alburg, Vt., the son of the late Cyrus and Leda (Alguire) Stata.

Those that predeceased him were two brothers, Cyrus Stata and Bill Stata.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna Stata; two brothers, Cyrus Stata and Bill Stata.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna Stata; two sons, Mark Stata and his wife, Kathy of Cumberland Head and Tim Stata and his wife, Carla, of Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren. Also his sister, June Judson of Florida, survives him.

Paul graduated from Alburg High School and Colorado School of Gunsmithing. He married Myrna G. Hazen on July 12, 1952, in St. Amadeus Church in Alburg, Vt.

Paul was veteran of the Korean War and served with the 79th Engineers. He retired after many years in the salvage and recovery business from the Nova Lead Corp. of Morrisonville in 1996.

Calling hours at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh will be on Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the North Country, Fitzpatrick Cancer Center or the Adirondack Humane Society.

JAMES FRANCIS DUPRAW, 69, of Pup Hill Road, Saranac, died at his home on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the O’Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

DENNIS MESSECK, 67, of Rouses Point, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Clark Funeral Home in Champlain.
