Gertrude "Polly" Keenan Dalton

Ticonderoga — Gertrude "Polly" Keenan Dalton, 92, of Lake George Avenue, Ticonderoga, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse, Washington Street, Watertown, where she had been visiting for the past two weeks. A long time resident of Watertown, she had moved to Ticonderoga four years ago to live with her daughter at St. Mary’s Convent.

She was born May 13, 1912, in Watertown, the daughter of Edward T. and Barbara (Crawford) Keenan. Mrs. Keenan died when Polly was three years old and she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. C. Phillip Bergevin.

She graduated from Watertown High School and from Syracuse University College of Fine Arts. She married John N. Dalton on July 5, 1937, at Holy Family Church, Watertown, with Monsignor Joseph Creedon officiating. Mr. Dalton died on June 5, 1997.

She was an art teacher at Case Junior High School, Watertown, N.Y., from 1935 to 1963. In 1964, she and her husband John owned and operated Dalton’s Religious Goods, Watertown, until her retirement in 1982.

She was a communicant of Holy Family Church, Watertown and she had been a summer resident of Clayton, N.Y., since 1922 and was a summer communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Clayton; she was in the choir, Ladies of Charity Auxiliary and Legion of Mary Auxiliary, all at Holy Family Church and its Altar and Rosary Society; she was on the Ladies Auxiliary for Holy Family School; she was a member of the College Club of Jefferson County and the Jefferson County Historical Society; she was a member of the Case Junior Retired Faculty Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Sister Sharon Anne Dalton of Ticonderoga; one nephew, Lawrence Dalton, S.C.; and cousins.

She was predeceased by one brother, Richard P. Keenan.

Calling hours will be held at the Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 214 Sterling St., Watertown, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Sisters of St. Joseph Chapel, 1425 Washington St., Watertown, before the funeral Mass, to be held on Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Sisters of St. Joseph Chapel. Rev. William G. Muench, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, Ticonderoga, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Watertown.
