Frederick A. Culley

PLATTSBURGH — Frederick A. Culley, 93, of Rugar Street, Plattsburgh, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 16, 1910, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Frederick D. and Helen I. (Gile) Culley.

He graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1928 and from the New York State Ranger School in 1929.

On Sept. 16, 1935, he married Bertha E. (LaShure) Culley in the Methodist Episcopal Church in New Hartford, N.Y.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Plattsburgh, N.Y., since 1947, having served as a Deacon, trustee, elder, treasurer and Clerk of the Session. Mr. Culley spent a number of years as a forest technician with the former New York State Conservation Dept., prior to his employment as assistant district manager for the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company. He owned the Credit Bureau of Plattsburgh before being appointed as an original member of the Board of Directors for the Plattsburgh Housing Authority. He was secretary for the Board prior to his being employed as Executive Director and Manager of Authority operations which position he held until 1964. At that time he joined forces with Norman C. Foote, forming Culley & Foote, Inc., insurance brokers and Norm Foote, Inc. Realtors.

In 1974 Mr. Culley retired, spending winters in Florida and traveling with his wife. Twelve active years living in Willsboro followed with golfing and boating (1978-1990) at which time his family returned to Plattsburgh.

Mr. Culley was a member of Clinton Lodge 155, Free and Accepted Mason, a 32 degree Mason, member of the Oriental Shrine, past president of the Adirondack Life Underwriters Association, past member of Plattsburgh Lodge 621 B.P.O.E., past Noble Grand Independent Order of Odd Fellows, past member and secretary of Clinton County Board of Realtors, one of original members and secretary of the Board of Trustees of Clinton Community College, Charter member, fireman and chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Cumberland Head Fire Department, past secretary and life member of the Willsboro Golf Club, the Optimist Club and AARP.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha E., of 68 years; a daughter, Helen C. Uriwal of Saint Peters, Mo.; a son, Frederick L. and his wife Sylvia of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; a daughter, Catherine I. Ewing of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a son, James A. and his wife Pauline of East Northport, N.Y.; a sister, Ethel M. Delaney of New Hartford, N.Y.; ten grandchildren, Robin (Earle) Eoff, Linda (Earle) Reckamp, Jennifer (Earle) Hagen, Sue Ellen (Culley) Butterfield, Barbara (Culley) Golden, Jill (Culley) Merritt, Scott Culley, Erik Ewing, Keith Culley and Kim Marie (Culley) Gennocro; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Donald F. LaShure of Cassville, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Gloria LaShure of Punta Gorda, Fla.; along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the North Country or the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Arrangements are under the direction of the R.W. Walker Funeral Home, Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Patricia Ann Mitchell

Plattsburgh — Patricia Ann Mitchell, 60, of 250 Robinson Rd., Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, in the early morning hours of Aug. 3, 2004, at the home of her brother, William Sabourin.

Ann was born Aug. 12, 1943, to Henry T. "Frenchie" and Elizabeth M. "Pat" (Boles) Sabourin at Mitchell Field Army Air Force Base Hospital in Hempstead, N.Y. She resided in the Plattsburgh area throughout her life.

She received her education from D’Youville Academy. Ann dedicated her working years to caring for the sick. She began as a nurse’s aide at the Champlain Valley Hospital and later provided private duty care to the terminally ill.

Ann is survived by her husband of 30 years, Robert L. Mitchell of Plattsburgh; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Laurie Mitchell; two grandchildren, Barrett and Benjamin Mitchell; two daughters, Elizabeth and Amanda Mitchell, all of Plattsburgh. She is also survived by three brothers and their spouses, John and Diane Sabourin of Chazy, Richard and Jackie Sabourin and William and Barbara Sabourin of Plattsburgh.

Ann’s greatest passions were horses and her longtime friendships. Her love for animals was well known. She was the co-founder of the Lake Champlain Appaloosa Club serving as its president for a number of years.

Ann spent the last month of her life being cared for at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, William and Barbara Sabourin. Her children are extremely grateful for the family and friends that cared for her in the final days. The outpouring of support was a true testament to the unselfish people that Ann surrounded herself with.

At Ann’s request there will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held at the convenience of the family. Later this summer Ann will return to a place that she loved very much, the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Long Island, N.Y.

Donations in Ann’s memory may be made to the St. Johns’ Feral Cat Fund, 4 Firehouse Lane, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.

Olive R. Cassevah

PLATTSBURGH — Olive R. Cassevah, 98, formerly of Felton Road, Schuyler Falls, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Clinton County Nursing Home, where she had lived since 1988.

She was born in Barre, Vt., on March 26, 1906, the daughter of Albert and Rose (Newton) Stacey.

Olive married Joseph Cassevah at St. Joseph’s Church in West Chazy in 1922. Mr. Cassevah died in 1978.

Mrs. Cassevah was a member of the Morrisonville Senior Citizens and the C.S.E.A.

Olive worked in the housekeeping department at the Plattsburgh State University College for seven years until retiring in 1970.

Survivors include one son, George Cassevah and his wife Catherine of Plattsburgh; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Grasso of Rome, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Two sons, Clayton and Gerald Cassevah; and two brothers and three sisters predeceased her.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

Burial will follow in West Chazy Rural Cemetery in West Chazy.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Clinton County Nursing Home Activity Fund.

Rita E. Kent

Morrisonville — Rita E. Kent, 74, of Morrisonville, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt.

She was born at Chazy Lake on March 17, 1930, the daughter of James and Mabel (Agoney) King.

She was employed as a nurses aide for many years at CVPH Medical Center. She was an avid bingo player.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Ann Kent of Saranac and Edward and Joan Kent of Mooers; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Hildred King of Chazy Lake and Robert and Esterine King of Altona; three sisters, Esther Donah of Chazy Lake, Elsie Mundy of New Hartford, N.Y., and Rachel Sain of Crestview Lake, Fla.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Peter Kent, died in 1982. A son, Timothy Kent, died in 1994. Two brothers, Harry and Earl; and four sisters, Rosanna Foley, VaIeda Stacey, Marie Lafountain and Dorothy Sylvia, also died earlier.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday from the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in West Plattsburgh Union Cemetery in Morrisonville.

Patrick S. Carson

Willsboro — Patrick S. Carson, 65, of Willsboro, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at CVPH on Monday Aug. 9, 2004.

Pat was born in Lewis, N.Y., on Aug. 3, 1939, the son of Benjamin and Molly Mary (Tracy) Carson.

Pat enjoyed working in his woodworking shop and his garden.

He is survived by his companion, Charlotte LaPine of Willsboro; his former wife and the mother of his five children, Margaret Gardner; his children, Randall Carson of South Plymouth, N.Y., Sherry Ellis of Willsboro, Linda Carson of Essex and Lisa Lee and her husband Jimmy of Willsboro; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Wilda Carson of Essex, Ross and Eleanor Carson of Willsboro and Anthony and Ellen Carson of Willsboro; five sisters, Martha Cornwright of Westport, Ruth Ball of Winsted, Conn., Irene Cross of Lewis, Elizabeth and brother-in-law Raymond Cross of Lewis and Marjorie Coonrod of Whallonsburgh; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Benjamin; a sister, Vergie Benway; and a son, Patrick Jr.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Essex with Rev. James Delbel celebrating Mass.

Interment will follow at the New Burt Cemetery in Whallonsburgh. Family and friends will gather at the Whallonsburgh Grange Hall following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Willsboro Rescue Squad.

Huestis Funeral Home in willsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice H. Haron

South Burlington, Vt. — Mrs. Beatrice H. Haron, 98, formerly of Port Washington, N.Y., and South Prospect Avenue, Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away peacefully at Pillsbury Manor North in South Burlington, Vt., on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004.

Bea as she was known to family and friends was born on May 15, 1906, in Fort Edward, N.Y., the daughter of Joseph and Agnes LaBarge Abare.

The family later moved to Willsboro, N.Y., where Bea resided until she entered the Champlain Valley School of Nursing in Plattsburgh. It was while attending college that Bea met and later married Frank P. Haron of Plattsburgh, N.Y. They moved to the Port Washington, Long Island area where Bea pursued her career in health care while her husband devoted his career to public school education, first as a teacher and later as an administrator. Their summers were spent in the Plattsburgh, N.Y., area while residing at their camp on Treadwells Bay. Her husband died on Nov. 24, 1964, following a long illness.

Bea enjoyed knitting, crewel and crocheting. Many newborn babies have worn her beautiful hand made sweaters. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Bea was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and nurse.

She was predeceased by her four brothers and one sister.

She is survived by two daughters, Sally J. Tourville and her companion Don Woodward of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Patricia A. Pizzagalli of South Burlington, Vt.; five grandchildren, Lisa Pizzagalli and her husband Dan Johnson of Shelburne, Vt., Mia Pizzagalli of Carry, N.C., Jon Pizzagalli and his wife Jenn of Shelburne, Vt., Gail Yrigoyen and her husband Dan of San Antonio, Texas, and Joseph Anthony "Tony" Tourville of Clifton Park, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren, Jamie and David Johnson of Shelburne, Vt.

A very special thanks and love to all our caring family, friends, neighbors and for the care given by Dr. Mark Pitcher and his staff, Pillsbury Manor North, Care Connection, Home Instead and Hospice of the Champlain Valley VNA.

Bea was a former communicant of St. John’s Church in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and later a member of St. John Vianney Church in South Burlington, Vt.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service for the immediate family will be held at their convenience at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Plattsburgh, N.Y. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date at St. John Vianney Church in South Burlington, Vt. At Bea’s request, donations may be made to the Building Fund of the Parish of St. John Vianney, 160 Hinesburg Road, South Burlington, VT 05403 or Hospice of the Champlain Valley VNA, 110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT, 05446.

Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh.

Clarence A. "Skip" McGee, 59, of Rand Street, Rochester, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

He was born in Plattsburgh, March 5, 1945, the son of John and Mary (Mae) McGee.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Augustine’s Cemetery in Peru.

A complete obituary will be in the Friday Press-Republican.

Arrangements are by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru.

John A. Hecht, 56, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center.

He was born on Nov. 9, 1947, the son of Alfred J. and Ruth (Adelson) Hecht.

The will be no public calling hours or funeral services.

The R.W. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
