Local businessman dies

Paul Titherington

Plattsburgh — Paul Titherington, 44, of Cumberland Head Road, Plattsburgh, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Liverpool, England, on Jan. 17, 1960, son of Geoffrey and Winifred (Wright) Titherington.

Paul was president of Mold Rite Plastics and co-owner of Geoffrey’s Pub and Treadwell Bay Marina and Resort.

He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, traveling, spending time with his family and his faithful German Shepard, Ischka.

Paul was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Plattsburgh Lodge 621 and The Barracks Golf Club.

He was predeceased by his uncles Peter Derek Titherington and William "Bill" Titherington; his father-in-law, William "Bill" Higgins; and Mr. Al Piafsky, who was like a grandfather to him.

Paul is survived by his wife of 23 years, Kim (Higgins) Titherington of Plattsburgh; his daughters, Sarah, Lori, Lisa and Katie, all of Plattsburgh; his father, Geoffrey Titherington of Plattsburgh; his mother, Winifred Bums and her husband Maurice of Plattsburgh; a sister, Diane McCarty and her husband Patrick of Plattsburgh; two brothers, Jeff Titherington of Plattsburgh and Gary Titherington and his wife Karen of Plattsburgh; his mother-in-law, Marie Higgins of Plattsburgh; his sister-in-law, Kerry Bushey and her husband Dan of Plattsburgh; two brothers-in-law, Michael Higgins and his wife Sharyl of Sacketts Harbor, N.Y., and Marty Higgins of Boston, Mass.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle and cousins also survive him.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Sorensen, Rector officiating.

Friends wishing may make donations to the Northeast Chapter of the American Heart Association.

Kathryn F. Jones

Lake Placid — Kathryn F. Jones, 82, of Mirror Lake Drive, Lake Placid died at home with her family by her side after a brief illness.

She was born in Lake Placid, June 13, 1922, the daughter of Frederick J. Fortune and Eleanor Dale Fortune

She and her husband, David W. Jones owned and operated Adirondack Photo Service in Lake Placid for many years.

After his death in 1968, she maintained the business until 1971 at which time, she was manager of Schmitt Sales Inc., better known locally as Robo. After her retirement she also owned and operated Country Cousin Antiques.

Kay’s true loves of life were her family, entertaining, bobsledding, photography and golf. In her early years, she was an avid horsewoman and skier. Her love of the sport of bobsledding also blossomed early, as many family members were active participants from the 1930’s through the 1970’s.

Kay’s photography skills were honed at Mount VanHovenberg, where, for decades, her big smile, warm heart, pin covered hat and fur coat were a permanent fixture at Zig-Zag curve. This is where the competitors and bob-run crew affectionately dubbed her, "Mrs. Zag". Many of her photos were published worldwide.

During World War II, she was executive secretary of the Town of North Elba War Ration Board.

Kay was also very active in the Craig Wood Golf Association, a past ,member of the Town of North Elba/Village of Lake Placid Historical Society Board of Directors, the Lake Placid High School Alumni Association and a member of St. Agnes Church.

She is survived by her six children, George, Peggy and David Jones, Barbara Benware and Kathryn O’Connor, all of Lake Placid and Maura Jones of Hanover, N.H.; four grandchildren, Olivia and Genevieve Benware, David Jones III and Kathryn Jones-McQuillian. Also surviving are two sisters and their husbands, Betty Bradley of Melbourne Fla., and Patricia Mills of Middletown, N.Y.; and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Kathryn was predeceased by two brothers, George H. Fortune and Frederick J. Fortune Jr.; and a sister, Eleanor Fortune Staves.

The family received friends at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3. A Mass in celebration of Kay's life will be held at St. Agnes Church on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to High Peaks Hospice, PO Box 840, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.

Ardyce A. Ware

Westport — Ardyce A. "Andy" Ware, 85, of Fire Fly Lane, Westport, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown.

She was born in Havelock, Neb., Jan. 2, 1919, the daughter of William C. and Minnie M. (Brockmann) Andrews.

Andy served in the United States Army as a nurse.

She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her husband, Thornton K. "Tony" Ware of Westport; her children, Patricia Ware of East Thetford, Vt., Stephen Ware of Sycamore, Ill., and Bruce Ware of Westport; two beloved grandchildren, Alan and Madeline Ware; one brother, Quyntin Andrews of Sheboygan, Wis.; and seven beloved grand-dogs.

She was predeceased by a son, Roger Ware; two brothers, Wayne and Doyll Andrews; and a sister, Awyn.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at the Westport Federated Church with Reverend Arthur Goyette officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the St. Charles Township Cemetery in St. Charles, Ill.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Westport Library.

Arrangements are by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Westport.

Richard P. Thatcher

MORRISONVILLE — A memorial Mass for Richard P. Thatcher, 51, of Morrisonville will be at the United Methodist Church in Saranac at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 6.

He passed on of natural causes Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Glens Falls Hospital.

Rick was born July 30, 1952, to Claude and Mildred Thatcher (Mason) at Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

He graduated from Willsboro Central School in 1971. He was employed in the construction industry and more recently in the mobile home setup and maintenance business.

He met his life's love in 1981, Sandra Wilson. They worked together to build a wonderful relationship and home, where they raised Sandy's two children, Melissa and Scott. Scott married Lisa Pardy in 1992. They were blessed with a beautiful granddaughter, Dallas, on Sept. 11, 1994, which they have cherished together every day of Rick's short life and he will cherish all through eternity.

Survivors include his brother, Jack of Willsboro, N.Y.; his sisters-in-law, Lillian of Queensbury, N.Y., Treva of Wichita, Kan., and Sally of Fort Edward, N.Y.; his niece, Jerri Dickerson and her family of Lake George and Kelly Beaulieu and her family of Queensbury N.Y.; and several other nieces and nephews.

His parents; his brothers, Claude Jr. and Charles; and his beloved daughter, Lindsay Jo, preceded him in death.

Anthony Cioppa

WILLSBORO — Anthony Cioppa, 78, of West Road, Willsboro, passed away on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Champlain Valley Physician's Hospital in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

He was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Ticonderoga, the son of Antimo and Theresa Della Cioppa.

He graduated in 1952 from Western Montana College following graduation he held teaching jobs in Vermont and Connecticut. In 1956, he began teaching in Willsboro, retiring in 1985 after a total of 35 years in the teaching profession.

Enlisting in June 1943, he served in World War II in China and the South Pacific, including Okinawa and Kwajalein and was discharged from the Marines in May 1946 after earning the rank of corporal several times.

He was a member of the Willsboro Fish and Game Club and following retirement, enjoyed several interests including golfing and painting with watercolors.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marion Patterson; five children, Carl Timothy (Elena) Cioppa of Bethlehem, N.Y., Terri Cioppa of Peru, N.Y., Andrea (Keith) Stewart of Malta, Tracey Cioppa of Acton, Mass., and Eric (Kathy) Cioppa of China, Maine; six grandchildren, Peter and Karyn Cioppa, Ryann and Zachary Cioppa and Matthew and Corey Stewart; and his siblings, sister, Mary Charlton of Ticonderoga; brother-in-law, Lee Pockett of Ticonderoga; brother, Carl (Harriet) Cioppa of Shelburne, Vt.; and sister-in-law, Kermuth Cioppa, of Blauvelt, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a sister, Sue Pockett; a brother, Joseph Cioppa; and a brother-in-law, Terry Charlton.

At Anthony's request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service; however, contributions in his memory may be made to the Willsboro Ambulance Squad.

Arrangements are with the Huestis Funeral Home, Willsboro, N.Y.

Roberta Bennett Brewster, 69, of Saranac Lake, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at her home surrounded by friends and family.

She was born in Bennington, Vt., on June 7, 1935, the daughter of Robert and Cecile (Tetreault) Brewster.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Bert's life on Friday, Aug. 6, at her home on the Bloomingdale Road at 1 p.m.

William Thomas Morin, 75, of Main Street, Bloomingdale, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Adirondack Medical Center.

He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Aug. 5, 1928, the son of Harold and Bessie (Millidge) Morin.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial service will take place at a later date to be announced.

Caroline G. Spinner, 88, formerly of Route 11, North Bangor, N.Y., and most recently of the Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone. She had been a patient there since July 27.

She was born in Constable, N.Y., July 21, 1916, the daughter of the late Melvin and Viola Avery Green.

There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church in Malone. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in Malone.

Arrangements are through the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service, Inc. of Malone.

Myrtle E. Tolan, 97, formerly of Mill Street and the Farrar Home, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone. She had been a resident there since July 11, 2001.

She was born in Glen Elm, Quebec, Canada, Feb. 15, 1907, the daughter of the late Harry W. and Christina Hinks Dear.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home in Malone. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John Worley officiating. Burial will be in the Morningside Cemetery in Malone.

Debbie Ann Young, 34, of Lake Street, Tupper Lake, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at her home.

She was born June 27, 1970, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Leonard F. and Pamela Jean (Beaudette) Young. Friends may call at the Richer Funeral Home in Tupper Lake on Friday, Aug. 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Alphonsus Church. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. A reception will follow at the home of Debbie’s parents on Pine Street.

Marguerite J. Ashline, 91, of Willsboro, N.Y., died at CVPH Medical Center Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, Aug. 5, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Huestis Funeral Home in Willsboro. Funeral Services will be held Friday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Philip's of Jesus Church, Willsboro. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. A full obituary will follow in tomorrow's paper.
