Well-known doctor, sailor David McDowell dies at 78

Dr. David Barber McDowell

Valcour — David Barber McDowell, 78, of Valcour, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born on Feb. 1, 1926, in Plattsburgh, the son of Katherine Barber McDowell and Dr. Edward Studholme McDowell.

He was a graduate of Plattsburgh High School, class of 1942 and attended Dartmouth College until his enrollment into the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, in 1944. After his graduation from the Naval Academy in 1948, he served aboard destroyers and submarines and resigned his commission in 1950 to attend medical school. He was graduated from Dartmouth Medical School in 1952 and the University of Michigan Medical School in 1954. In 1955 he entered into internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at A.N. Brady Hospital and Albany Hospital. He completed his residency in 1958 and opened the first private practice specializing in OB/GYN in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

He married Mary (Mimi) Dickson Haskell of Stamford, Conn., on July 29, 1950. They had three sons, Rob (1951) David (1953) and William (1956) and a daughter, Mary Katherine (1960).

He served in a variety of leadership roles in local hospitals, county and state medical societies and the Clinton County Board of Health. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Vermont Medical School and established CVPH as a training site for UVM residents in OB/GYN. He was a stalwart supporter of women's reproductive freedom and served on the Medical Advisory Board for Northern Adirondack Planned Parenthood.

After retiring from medical practice, Dr. McDowell continued to serve his community through his work as Medical Director of the Conifer Park Outpatient clinic in Plattsburgh, his presence in and advocacy for Alcoholics Anonymous and his continued service on the Clinton County Board of Health.

Dave expressed his spirited enthusiasm for life in many ways. An avid sailboat racer and fierce competitor, he was a founder of the Valcour Sailing Club and a member of the Lake Champlain Racing Conference. His love of Lake Champlain and its history was evident in his support for the Lake Champlain Committee, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, the refurbishing of the Valcour Island lighthouse and involvement with several historical reenactments of the Battle of Valcour.

Dr. McDowell's devotion to helping others continued to be felt in his community long after retirement from medical practice. He will be remembered for his spirit and willful determination in the face of life's difficulties, his devotion to his family, his salty sense of humor and his compassion for those in need.

Dr. McDowell is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mimi; and their two sons and daughters-in-law, Rob and Jan McDowell of Plattsburgh and Bill and Britt McDowell of Plattsburgh; and by their daughter and son-in-law, Kate McDowell and David Rider of Burlington, Vt.; and nine grandchildren, Damian, Brooke and Parker Stafford, David McDowell, Nina, Sam and Olivia McDowell and Will and Jack Rider.
