Published: 4/13/04Carlton E. MerrillHarkness — Carlton E. Merrill, 71, of the Clintonville Road, Harkness, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Plattsburgh, April 22, 1932, the son of Hubert H. and Mildred K. (Bragg) Merrill. He retired from Burrell’s Orchard in Peru in 1994, where he worked as general manager for many years. He was a 15 year member of the Peru Volunteer Fire Department. Carlton was a lifelong resident of the Adirondacks and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He and his wife have traveled to all 50 states, Mexico and Canada. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carol A. (Cooper) Merrill of Harkness; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Jennifer Merrill of Latham, their children, Jason of New York City and Elizabeth of Watervliet; a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Tim LaDuke, their children, Meaghan and Michelle, all of Harkness; one sister, Barbara Everleth; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Leta, Harold and Margaret and Lawrence and Jean; sister-in-law, Evelyn Merrill; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, James and Harris Merrill. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. A time for reflections will follow at 4 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Donations in his memory may be made to the FitzPatrick Cancer Center or the Keeseville Rescue Squad. Evelyn E. LaRowChamplain — Evelyn E. LaRow, 84 years old of Champlain, N.Y., passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004, at her home in Champlain. She was born July 14, 1919, in Chazy, N.Y., daughter of the late Albert C. Rock and the late Susan Ellen Lucia Rock. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, puzzles and being with her family. Surviving is a daughter, Linda L. Pettis of Rouses Point; granddaughter, Naomi and Fred Bell of Plattsburgh; great-grandson, Avery Bell of Plattsburgh; two sisters, Pauline Castine of Massachusetts and Helen Morse of Plattsburgh; a close friend, Rose Pheneuf of Champlain; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. LaRow; sisters, Lena Rock, Bernice Fredette, Dorothy Stanworth and Mabel Rose Rock; and son-in-law, Harley Pettis. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the at Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh, N.Y. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Chazy, Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at 11 a.m. Interment will be later in the year in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Ronald L. Sample Sr.Rouses Point — Ronald L. Sample Sr., 59, of Rouses Point, was taken into our Lord’s hands on Thursday, April 8, 2004, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his family and friends at home. Ronald was born in Cannons Corners on Dec. 24, 1944, the son of Wright Sr. and Helen (Morin) Sample. Ronald was a 1962 graduate of Mooers High School. He was an engineer for the C.P. Railroad for 20 years. Ron enjoyed many things in life, traveling, hockey, the outdoors and family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Helen (LaBombard) Sample of Rouses Point; three daughters; Tammy Sample and companion Joe von Speigel of California, Donna Sample of Rouses Point and Marcie Sample and Joe Kresge of Champlain; a grandson, Kevin Lee Sample of California; two sisters, Geraldine Weldon Sample of Mooers Forks and Kathleen Dickinson of Mooers Forks; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wright Jr. and Ethel Sample of Mooers Forks and Larry and Jane Sample of Peru; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ronald was predeceased by his parents; a son Ronald L. Sample Jr.; and a brother, Claude Sample. A funeral service will be held at the Mooers United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at 2 p.m. officiated by Rev. Al Johnson, pastor, Rev. Maurice Boucher and Rev. Jay Seymour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron’s memory to the following Hospice of the North Country; the American Cancer Society; and the Mooers Fire Department. The E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Champlain is in charge of arrangements. Elizabeth A. BruceStandish — Elizabeth A. Bruce, 93, of Standish, died Friday, April 9, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Dannemora on Aug. 6, 1910, the daughter of Michael and Hattie (Osher) Raymond. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Standish. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Donna Bruce of Cleveland, Ohio, Richard and Rose Bruce of Saranac and Glenn Bruce and his companion Cathy Collins of Loughman, Fla.; a daughter, Veronica Rock of Kissimmee, Fla., and Standish; a brother, George Raymond of Wyantskill, N.Y.; a special nephew, Jack LaDuke of Standish; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Her husband of 60 years, Robert H. Bruce died on Aug. 7, 1995. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s Church in Standish. A reception will follow in the Standish Community Center. Interment will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Lyon Mountain Rescue Squad. The Lyon Mountain Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. William E. FitzgeraldPLATTSBURGH — William E. Fitzgerald, 90, of Cornelia Street, Plattsburgh, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center. He was born in Altona, N.Y., on Oct. 14, 1913, the son of Emmett and Bertha (Hull) Fitzgerald. William married the former Dorothy Parker in 1934 at St. John’s Church. They were married for 66 years until Dorothy’s death in 2000. Mr. Fitzgerald was a proud farmer for 10 years in Altona. He then moved to Cornelia Street in Plattsburgh and began to work for Diamond International, retiring after 50 years of service. Survivors include one sister, Mary Naisby of Suffern, N.Y.; one foster son, Ray Fisher and his wife Audrey of Salisbury Center, N.Y.; three nieces, Maxine Petro and her husband Tom of New Windsor, N.Y., Lou-Ann Sheehan and her husband Bob of Texas and Lynn Paglia and her husband George of Suffern, N.Y.; two nephews, Arthur Wirsing and his wife Judy of Piermont, N.Y., and Eric Kassner and his wife Avis of Tomkins Cove, N.Y.; and a dear friend, Diane Turner of Montreal, Quebec and formerly of Plattsburgh. He was predeceased by two sisters, Madeline Kassner and Eileen Wirsing; and three brothers-in-law, Wolfgang Kassner, John Naisby and Arthur Wirsing. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Chazy. SPRING BURIALS KEESEVILLE - A memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Keeseville for all who died from I December 2003 to April 2004 from the parishes of Immaculate Conception and St. John the Baptist of Keeseville.
