Calvin Lyndon LaBarge

Chateaugay — Calvin Lyndon LaBarge, 78, of East Main Street, Chateaugay died Monday, March 22, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, N.Y.

He was born in Johnson City, N.Y., on Aug. 16, 1925, the son of Lyndon and Elizabeth (Dupree) LaBarge.

He was married to Theresa Cassavaw on Aug. 17, 1946, in St. Patrick's Church, Chateaugay by Reverend Floyd Brown.

Mr. LaBarge is survived by his wife of 57 years; a daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Danny Lucia of Dannemora, N.Y.; a sister and brother- in-law, Marcella and Terry Trudeau of Brushton; a granddaughter and her husband, Laurie and Bryan Cross of Dannemora; a grandson and his wife, Eric and Lisa Lucia of Saranac, N.Y.; two great-grand-children, Evan and Hailea Cross of Dannemora, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; four sisters-in-law, Majorie LaFlesh of Malone, N.Y., Eva Hood of Montpelier, Vt., Mable Cassavaw of Fairport, N.Y., and June LaBarge Robert of Brushton, N.Y.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Leonard LaBarge; three children in infancy, Calvin Jr., Mary and Richard.

Mr. LaBarge was employed at Chateaugay Central School for 32 years as a bus driver and head custodian. Calvin was very proud of Chateaugay Central School and worked diligently to keep the building in good order, keeping students and taxpayers in mind.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and a Third Degree Knights of Columbus member. He served on the parish council several years, most recently on St. Patrick's Cemetery committee. He was on the organizational committee for the Knights of Columbus Bingo.

Calling hours will be held at Chateaugay Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday in St. Patrick's Church with Reverend John Demo, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chateaugay.

Donations in his memory may be made to St. Patrick's Church or local religious organizations.

Alex F. Savage

Moriah — Alex F. Savage, 83 of Moriah, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y., surrounded by his family.

He was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Moriah, the son of Anthony and Amelia (Denovich) Savage.

He was married to Maude (Woods) Savage who predeceased him.

Alex was a veteran of World War II. He was a dedicated, hardworking man who was employed at the Republic Steel Corporation, Eichen's Sawmill in Ticonderoga and retired from Glavin's Farm in Moriah.

Alex was a strong man who enjoyed using his hands. His hobbies included auto mechanics, gardening and clearing land with his tractor and saw. After providing for his family, one of his greatest loves was working the soil and giving away his harvest.

Survivors include his son, Gerald Savage and his wife Debbie of Crown Point; daughter, Lynn Ross and her husband Michael of Crown Point; daughter Mary Ross and her husband Clifford (Skip) of Ticonderoga; daughter, Allison Snyder and her husband Herbert of Mineville; twins, daughter Amelia (Amy) Hayes of Port Henry and Anthony (Tony) Savage and his companion Shirley Laing of Moriah; daughter, Stella Rock and her husband Robert of Alameda, Calif.; daughter, Jeanette Clark and her husband Michael of Ticonderoga and Debbie Gozlaz of Moriah; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. When introducing his children to others it was evident that he was an exceptionally proud parent, and he will be missed by all.

Calling hours will be at Alex's home on the South Moriah Road in Moriah, N.Y., on Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 12 noon until 9 p.m. Funeral services will be on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Church of All Saints in Mineville, N.Y., with Monsignor McAzoy officiating. Immediately following and throughout the day there will be a reception at his home in celebration of his life. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery in Moriah, N.Y.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y.

Mr. Philip M. Layman

Plattsburgh — Mr. Philip M. "Hop" Layman, 92, of Lake Forest Drive, Plattsburgh passed away, Monday, March 22, 2004, at Meadowbrook Health Care Facility.

He was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 18, 1911, the son of Martin and Hilda (Bogren) Layman.

Philip had worked for Minneapolis Moline and Material Handling Engineering Firms.

He enjoyed photography, boating, bird watching, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Stephen; two brothers, Luther and John.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Violet (Gilbert) Layman of Plattsburgh; a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Larry Kudrle of Plattsburgh; eight grandchildren; ten great-grand-children; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Lake Forest. Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family at Wooddale Lutheran Church, St. Louis Park, Minn. Interment will be in the family plot at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minn.

Arrangements are by the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh.

Bertha Kelley Poissant

PLATTSBURGH — Bertha Kelley Poissant of Plattsburgh died March 23, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center. Bertha was born in Beekmantown, N.Y., on March 14, 1908, the daughter of John Kelley and Julia Fitzgerald Kelley.

Bertha attended elementary school in Morrisonville and graduated from Morrisonville High School in 1925 and Plattsburgh Normal School in 1928.

She loved teaching and began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Beekmantown and ended her career at St. Peter's School in Plattsburgh. In the interim she substituted in the area public schools.

Bertha married Adolph Leeward Poissant at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville in 1937. He predeceased her on July 1, 1998.

Her parents; two brothers, William Kelley and James Kelley; and two sisters, Mary Trudeau and Julia Mullen, also predeceased her.

Bertha was a devout Catholic and a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Plattsburgh. She was also a member and past president of the St. John's Altar Rosary Society and a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

Bertha is survived by a daughter, Clare Corron and her husband Donald of Plattsburgh; and three sons Monsignor Leeward Poissant, pastor of St. John the Baptist and Immaculate Conception Churches in Keeseville, John and his wife Lorraine of Hampton, N.H., and Brian and his wife Christine of Manhasset, N.Y. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Colleen O'Brien and her husband William of Crofton, Md., Allison Corron of Springfield, Mass., Kimberly Poissant of Manhasset, N.Y., Jon Poissant and his wife Kelli of Plattsburgh, Kelly Graves and her husband Arthur of Peru, Keri Poissant of Newton Centre, Mass., and Ryan Poissant of Plattsburgh; four great-grandchildren, Jack O'Brien, Christopher Poissant, Keith Poissant and Nora Graves; and several nieces and nephews, also survive.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 12 noon from St. John the Baptist Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be later in the year in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Masses may be offered in her memory.

Cynthia Crystal Meyer, 53, of Pine Ridge Drive, Morrisonville, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at her home.

She was born in Rome, N.Y., Jan. 11, 1.951, the daughter of Franklyn August and Gladys Esther (Lamb) Meyer.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Morrisonville Community Church with Reverend Rodger White, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held later in the Evergreen Cemetery in Stokes, N.Y.

Arrangements are by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru.

Margaret J. Sargeant, 82, of Dannemora, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements were incomplete Tuesday evening and are with the O'Neill- Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.
