Philip E. Mitchell

WITHERBEE — Philip E. Mitchell, 62, of Witherbee, and Moses-Ludington Nursing Home, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. He was born Feb. 19, 1941, in Weybridge, Vt., the son of Elmer and Elizabeth Ruth (Nimblett) Mitchell.

Phil grew up in Witherbee and attended Mineville High School. He joined the Navy on Dec. 1, 1960, where he served as a fireman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Randolph. The USS Randolph participated in the Cuban Quarantine Operations during the Cuban Crisis and was anchored off the coast of Cuba.

He was married to Sharon L. Smith in 1965. Phil was employed by International Paper as a journeyman piper and retired in 1989 after 24 years of service. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Mitchell of Ticonderoga; his wife, Sharon; three children, Christine Overbeek of Ticonderoga, Dawn Nardacci and husband, Matthew, of Wynantskill, N.Y., Todd Mitchell and fiancée Kristy Karl of Ticonderoga; two grandchildren, Sierra Overbeek and Dylan Overbeek of Ticonderoga; three sisters, Patricia Sprague and husband, Donald, Mary Jane Marcil and husband, Thomas, Susan Shpur and husband, Thomas; four brothers, James Mitchell, Paul Mitchell and wife, Marie, Robert Mitchell and wife, Jane, and Dan Mitchell; a brother-in-law, Allen Smith, and wife, Marion; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Moriah Presbyterian Church, Church Street, Port Henry, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National MS Society, 733 Third Ave., New York, NY 10017-3288, the American Cancer Society, or Moriah Ambulance Squad. Burial will be at the South Moriah Cemetery in the spring.

John D. Ryan

DANNEMORA — John D. "Jack" Ryan, 75, of Dannemora, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born at Alder Brook on May 28, 1928, the son of Lawrence P. and Bridgett (Hogan) Ryan.

He was a veteran and served during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as the head bus mechanic for the Wappingers Falls School District for many years and also operated the Cutting Corner and Ryan’s Locksmith in Dannemora.

He is survived by three sisters, Esther Noel of Dannemora, Margaret Bond of Plattsburgh, Geraldine Chase of Cadyville, and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; six brothers, Lawrence, Dennis, Thomas, James, Henry and Leo Ryan, and two sisters, Elizabeth Cormier and Mary Eileen Lucia, all died before him.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the O’Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Wednesday from St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora.

John Thomas Jajer

ISLE LA MOTTE, Vt. — John Thomas Jajer, 81, a resident of the Isle La Motte community since 1963, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 17, 2004, in the Northwestern Medical Center in Saint Albans City.

A native of New Milford, Conn., he was born on Dec. 5, 1922, he was the son of the late John Sr. and Margaret Carroll Jajer. He attended schools in Connecticut and on June 20, 1950, was married to the former Isabel L Griggs who predeceased him on Jan. 16, 1984.

For most of his working life John was self-employed as a carpenter and was a part of many large construction projects.

He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy assigned to the USS Rodman in the Mediterranean and Atlantic Campaigns during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew B. Mygatt Post 1672 in New Milford, Conn., and a former member of the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 in Alburg, Vt.

John leaves his daughter with whom he made his home, Carol Mashtare of Isle La Motte; two granddaughters, Mary Manor and her husband Kevin of Rouses Point, and Wendy Favreau and her husband Adlai of Mooers Forks; six great-grandchildren, Casey and Michael Manor of Rouses Point and Briana and Brandon Mashtare and Elaina and Evan Favreau all of Mooers Forks. He is also survived by four brothers, Frank, Vincent, Martin and Morris Jajer all of New Milford, Conn., as well as family members including John and Margaret Marsh of Bridgewater, Conn., Gloria Wagner of South Carolina and Clint Deo of Isle La Motte and several nieces and nephews.

John’s family wishes to offer very special thanks to the staff of the Northwestern Medical Center and the Visiting Nurse Association as well as his caregiver Edna Bradley for all the love, care and support given to John during his illness.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Grand Isle Village Cemetery Receiving Vault to await interment there in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:30p.m. until the hour of the funeral. Gifts in John’s memory may be made to the Northwestern Medical Center, P.O. Kenneth James Buckley

LANSINGBURGH — Kenneth James Buckley Sr., 63, of 3rd Avenue in Lansingburgh, died on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy after a long illness.

He was born on May 24, 1940, in Saranac and was the son of the late Daniel and Della McKassland Buckley. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland with his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Buckley retired in 2002 from the General Electric Co. in Waterford where he had been a silicone operator, having worked for GE for more than 35 years.

Ken was a fishing and hunting enthusiast, enjoyed antique cars, especially the Ford Models. He was a member or the National Rifle Association. Ken was also a member of a rod and gun club, was an avid coin collector and he was a communicant of St. Augustine’s Church in Lansingburgh.

He was the beloved husband of Patricia Abare Buckley, whom he married on Aug. 16, 1969; devoted father of Tracey M. Buckley, Timothy D. Buckley, both of Lansingburgh, Holly A. LaBombard and her husband Frank of Plattsburgh, Susan E. Buckley, Brian C. Buckley both of Lansingburgh and Crystle L. Buckley of Plattsburgh and the late Kenneth James Buckley Jr. and Matthew J. Buckley; brother of Ronald Buckley of West Chazy, Daniel Buckley of Watervliet, Madeline Chartier of Poestenkill, N.Y., June Rock and Myrtle Jefferson both of Peru, and the late Marjorie Klopp and Timothy D. Buckley; cherished grandfather of Steven James Bowen of Lansingburgh; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday at the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home (Corner of 115th Street and Fourth Ave.) in Lansingburgh, thence to St. Augustine’s Church where at 9:00 a.m. the Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.

RUTH M. ROCK, 79, of Union Road, Peru, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru.

VIOLET DUCATTE, 91, of Rabideau Street, Cadyville, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Cadyville on July 13, 1912, the daughter of Noel and Jenny (Rock) Terrier.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be handled by Brown Funeral Home in Cadyville. A complete obituary will appear in Tuesday’s newspaper.
