Ian Raymond Burns

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. — Ian Raymond Burns, 31, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., was lifted up into the arms of Jesus at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, as a result of an accident.

He was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the son of Raymond and Anna Burns.

Ian graduated from Lakeshore Christian School in Plattsburgh and attended Clinton Community College and Plattsburgh State University. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1996 and worked as an engineer at Curtis Wright and Zeuna Starker. He was currently a second year student at the Medical University of South Carolina School of Dental Medicine in Charleston, S.C.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and was a dedicated Clemson Tiger fan. Ian and Tessa have been dedicated members of the Boykin Spaniel Rescue and have three special boykins, Savannah, Charlie and Copper.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his beloved wife Tessa Goolsby-Burns; a brother and sister-in-law, Ryan and Jodi Burns of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and brother Noah Burns and fiancée Tina Segreti of Rochester, N.Y.; grandmother Frances Burns; uncle Doug Burns and his wife Lydia and uncle Phillip Burns of Philadelphia; loving in-laws Jack and Jane Goolsby of Easley, S.C.; brother-in-law Dr. John B. Goolsby and his wife Marianne; uncle Jim Goolsby and his wife Judi of Austin, Texas, uncle Steve Goolsby and his wife Cassie of Suwanee, Ga., Alan and Aunt Linda Snapp of Mobile, Ala.; grandmother Anna Hogan of Keystone, Iowa; uncle David Hogan and his wife Barbara of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Garth and aunt Susan Ruchin of Snohomish, Wash.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens, S.C., on Friday, Jan. 9th. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at Saint Michael’s Episcopal Church in Easley on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004.

Karin D. Smith

Wallingford, Conn. — Karin D. Kosellek Smith, 54, of Woodhouse Avenue, Wallingford, Conn., died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Conn. She was the beloved wife of the late David M. Smith.

Born in Villingen, Germany, on Feb. 1, 1949, a daughter of the late Heribert and Irmgard (Paszehr) Kosellek, she had been a resident of Barre, Vt., and Plattsburgh, N.Y., before moving to Wallingford three years ago.

She had been employed by the Ocean State Job Lot in Meriden and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wallingford.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Michael C. Kosellek, with whom she resided in Wallingford; her four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ute and Heinz Pfaff, Heike and Peter Hinz, Edith and Egon Kuss and Elke and Hansjorg Saile, all of Germany; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Milka Kosellek of Germany, Joan and Gerard Dion of Meriden, Conn., Linda (Mrs. Richard) Smith of Meriden and Jimmy Smith of Wallingford; her former sisters-in-law, Terri Butterworth of Meriden and Connie Smith of Wallingford; her beloved German Shepherd, Arko; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Aribert Kosellek.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in The Wallingford Funeral Home. The Rev. Karen Cook, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiated. Interment was in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown.

Earl T. Atwood

Plattsburgh — Mr. Earl T. Atwood, 68, of Mac Donough Street, Plattsburgh, passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born in Chazy, N.Y., on July 28, 1935, the son of Elizabeth Atwood. Earl was raised by Bessie Donah in Plattsburgh.

Earl retired from the Plattsburgh City Police Department in 1994 as captain after 39 years of service. He was a member of Retired Chiefs of Police. Earl enjoyed carpentry and did many odd jobs for many people over the years along with his partner, Pete Forgette. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, reading and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and he was a member of St. John's Church.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marilyn M. (Curtis) Atwood of Plattsburgh; a son, Bryan Atwood and his fiancée, Judy House of Plattsburgh; five daughters, Brenda Mallet and Jim Lacey of Schuyler Falls, Michelle Breen and her husband Col. Joseph Breen, USAF, of Washington, D.C., JoAnn Votraw and her husband Dan of Plattsburgh, Wendy Neyland and her husband Kenneth of Plattsburgh and Lisa Atwood and her fiancé Renato Guanga of Plattsburgh; his mother-in-law, Gladys O’Donahue; eight grandchildren, Jillian, Daniel, Catherine, Matthew, Mario, Ethan, Mitchell and Seth.

Earl was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Atwood; Bessie Donah; and several stepbrothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at noon at St. John's Church.

Interment will be later in the year at Union Cemetery, West Plattsburgh.

Friends wishing may make donations to the American Heart Association.

Edward C. Stockwell

BEEKMANTOWN — Edward C. Stockwell, 67, of Stoney Acres Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Pontiac, Mich., on Feb. 29, 1936, the son of Forrest and Ersie (Sandusky) Stockwell.

He attended high school in Pontiac, Mich., and graduated from Clinton Community College here in Plattsburgh.

Edward married the former Beverly J. Fifield at St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain on May 28, 1960. Beverly predeceased him on Feb. 17, 2001.

He served as a flight engineer in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years until his retirement in 1974. Edward served two tours in Vietnam, the Korean War and flew 165 missions over Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. He received many honors and medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Force Longevity Medal, nine Air Medals with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, an Army Good Conduct Medal and an Air Force Good Conduct Medal.

He was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Edward is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Anita Stockwell of Oberkostenz, Germany, David and Patricia Stockwell of Victorville, Calif., and John and Nancy Stockwell of Lyon Mountain; two daughters and one son-in-law, Tammy Lashway of West Chazy and Elizabeth Stockwell-Wheeler and her husband Johnny of Chazy, N.Y.; one brother, Richard Stockwell and his wife Rosie of Clinton, Ind.; two sisters, Carol Null of Greencastle, Ind., and Beverly May and her husband William of Indianapolis, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Megan, Alec and Ryan Stockwell, John and James Stockwell, Vasile and Loredana Stockwell, Sarah and Jessica Lashway, Matthew Chamberlain and Forrest Wheeler; two sisters-in-law, Janet Benjamin and her husband Michael of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Sharon McMartin and her husband Nyle of Jesup, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Dale Fifield and his wife Linda of Rupher Glen, Va.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and close cousins.

He was predeceased by one brother, James Stockwell; and two loving and caring individuals who took him into their home and raised him like family, Dorothy and Chuck Beech.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain. Burial will take place in the spring in the Methodist Cemetery in Lyon Mountain.

Donations in his memory may be made to the St. John Feral Fund or the Adirondack Humane Society.

Agnes M. Donahue Pierce

Westport, N.Y. — Agnes M. Donahue Pierce, 84, loving mother, grandmother and sister, was placed in the Lord's hands Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Agnes was born Agnes Mary Donahue on Dec. 11, 1919, the daughter of James and Mary (Downey) Donahue. Agnes was one of ten children.

A lifelong resident of Westport, she was married to Joseph Grover Pierce, who predeceased her in May of 1987. Along with her husband, Agnes was predeceased by her siblings, James, Michael, Marie, Florence, Helen and Evelyn; and her niece, Carol Plonka.

Mrs. Pierce is survived by one daughter, Mari Trybendis of Port Henry; her granddaughters, Abigale Trybendis of Port Henry and Jennifer Carson of Mineville; and her great - grandchildren, Courtney, Stephen and Joseph. Also three sisters, Alice Carey of New Port Richey, Fla., Blanche Brown of Port Henry and Mary Newton of Ticonderoga; a stepdaughter, Jean Parks of Fort Myers, Fla., and her family; along with several nieces and nephews; and good, caring friends.

Agnes was an employee of the Treadwell Estate in Westport for a number of years before her retirement. She was always devoted to her family, mom, Gram, grandchildren and sisters and she will be truly and deeply missed. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, Elvis Presley and her family.

Calling hours will be held Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home, Port Henry. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Philips Neri Church, Westport, N.Y. Spring burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Westport Ambulance Squad, St. Philips Church or the Westport SPCA.

Thomas F. Williford

SCHROON LAKE — Thomas F. Williford, 78, of 631 Route 9, died Thursday morning, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Glens Falls Hospital after a brief illness.

Tom was born Jan. 4, 1926, in the Bronx, N.Y., the son of the late William R. and Isabella (McCormick) Williford.

Tom was predeceased by his brothers William A. Williford in 1991 and Robert Williford in 1983.

Tom was a graduate of Schroon Lake Central School and the State University at Cortland; he taught school for 35 years, the last 27 years at Schroon Lake Central School, and retired in 1984.

Tom was a longtime member of the Schroon Lake Volunteer Fire Department and a longtime member of the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad. Tom was certified in advanced life support and devoted to helping people with the emergency squad. Over the years, he assisted thousands of people in distress.

Tom was honored by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce as the Citizen of the Year in 1993, and a second time with the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad in 2002.

Tom was a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for many years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Asiatic Theatre as a pharmacist’s mate in the U.S. Navy.

Tom was a well known and respected soccer and baseball official and in his earlier years was the head lifeguard at the Town of Schroon beach.

Tom enjoyed golf and was a member of the Schroon Lake Golf Course men’s and couples’ league.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Frances (Karkoski) Williford of Schroon Lake; his daughter, Frances, and her husband, Roger Mahler, of Schroon Lake; his sons, Stanley and his wife, Linda, Williford of North Creek, Joseph and his wife, Nancy, Williford of Canandaigua, and Thomas and his wife, Martha, Williford of Bogota, Colombia; his brothers Edmund Roy and James Williford of Schroon Lake; his sister, Isabelle Signorelli of Rochester; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake with the Rev. Richard Sturtz officiating. Interment will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in the spring.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home, 1019 Route 9, Schroon Lake.

The family suggests memorials take the form of donations to the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad, Schroon Lake, NY 12870, or to High Peaks Hospice, PO Box 131, Saranac Lake, NY 12983-0131.

Irene E. Trombley, 93, formerly of Ellenburg, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Clinton County Nursing Home, Plattsburgh.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced through the Chateaugay Funeral Home.
