Eugene Joseph KramerCHATEAUGAY LAKE — Eugene Joseph Kramer was lovingly known as Dear Ole Dad to his eight children, known as Papa to his ten grandchildren and beloved by his canine companion Archie. He was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Brooklyn, the youngest of nine children to John and Anna (Conrad) Kramer. He was known as "The Golden Boy" by his siblings and known as a trickster to his family and friends. While attending Villanova College for chemical engineering, he chose to leave school behind to serve as an Amy medic in northern Africa and Italy during World War II. After the end of the war, being the great nature lover he was, he returned to his boyhood retreat at Chateaugay Lake. He never looked back and happily lived out his life in the profession he always loved, house and sign painting. In 1954, he married his first wife, Mary Cheyne Kramer, who predeceased him in January 1960. In 1962, he married Margaret Jacobs Kramer. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; seven daughters and five son-in-laws; Lynn and Wayne Abare of Alexandria Bay, Susan and Charles Gerow of Burke, Patti and Carlos Mato of Malone, Mary and Michael Calnon of Canton, Ohio, Janet and Richard Decosse Sr. of Churubusco, Alice Kramer of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Valerie Kramer of Malone; and a son, Peter Kramer of Watertown, N.Y. He is also survived by two brothers, Philip Kramer of Merrill and Harry Kramer of Long Island. Two brothers and four sisters died previously. Eugene was a family man at heart and fortunately was able to know and love his grandchildren, Derek and Katie Tracy, Shane and Carly Bohlman, Virginia and Eric McPherson, Sarah Gerow, Krista Gerow, Daron Tracy, Catherine Decosse, Rachel Decosse, Christopher Calnon and Meagan Calnon; and two great-grandchildren, Cameron Tracy and Matthew Bohlman. Eugene or UE as he was known to his friends and family is also survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews from Chateaugay Lake to California. UE was almost as good a hunter and fisherman as he was a pool player, but never as good as he was at playing cards. He was the "Cassino Champion of the World " and now of Heaven. His many journeys in life took him down many roads, but the road most traveled was into the hearts and lives of his family. He will be most remembered for his gift of unconditional love and his sense of humor and as Eugene always ended the conversation, "That's the story". Calling hours will be Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Chateaugay Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, Chateaugay with Rev. John Demo. Burial will be in the parish cemetery in the spring.
