Dorothea DuBrey McGarvey

Atlanta, Ga. — Dorothea DuBrey McGarvey, 87, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, died Dec. 6, 2003, after an extended period of declining health surrounded by her family. A native of Chazy Lake, N.Y., daughter of the late Silas and Adeline DuBrey. The wife of a career military officer, she spent the first half of her married life living and traveling throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. Dorothea and her husband retired to Columbus, Ga. They were active members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and many other civic activities in Columbus.

Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Edward, U.S. Army retired, of 60 years; daughter, Sondra Held; grandson, Douglas, U.S. Marine Corps; sisters, Amelia DuBrey and Marie Venetta Sebast; brothers, Louis DuBrey and Archie DuBrey.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Maureen Dinges and William Dinges of Atlanta, Ga.; her son-in-law, Thomas Held and grandson Patrick Held of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Madeline Coates, Frieda Walker and Yvonne DuBrey of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Theresa Root of Dannemora, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Columbus, Ga., on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003. Burial was at Fort Benning Cemetery.

Memorial contributions or any act of charity made be made in her memory.

Linwood Baker Sherman

Jay, N.Y. — Linwood Baker Sherman of Jay, N.Y., died Dec. 10, 2003, at Meadowbrock Healthcare in Plattsburgh, after an extended illness.

He was the son of the late Edward A. Sherman and Clara (Hicks) Sherman and the brother of the late Floyd Arthur Sherman, all of Westport, Mass.

Upon his retirement from the Firestone Company in Fall River, Mass., he moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., where he became yard supervisor of C.S.Y. Yachts in Tampa. Active in the Audubon Society, he also devoted much of his time to Boyd Hill Nature Park, where he was a volunteer trail guide. His life-long interests centered around boat building, skippering his own swordfishing m.v. out of Westport, Mass., bird watching and lending his organizational talents to the Jay Entertainment and Musical Society. Mr. Sherman was also a member of the Masonic Order, Noquochoke Lodge in Westport, Mass.

He is survived by his wife, Anne H. Sherman; three stepchildren, Brian Stork, Edward Stork and Susan Porter; three granddaughters; four great - grandchildren; and cousins in Massachusetts.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in AuSable Forks at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28th, followed by a reception at the parish hall. A graveside service will be held in Westport, Mass., in the spring, where his ashes will be committed to his family plot.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to JEMS, Hospice of the North Country, Inc., Meadowbrook Healthcare, or a charity of one’s choice.

Anne K. Smith

Plattsburgh — Mrs. Anne K. Smith, 84, formerly of Montcalm Avenue, Plattsburgh, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at the Meadowbrook Health Care Facility with her family by her side.

She was born in Lowell, Mass., on Oct. 17, 1919, the daughter of Thomas F. and Elsie (Cassevah) Conlon.

Anne was a graduate of St. John’s School, class of 1937. She taught catechism and was a Scout Den Mother. Anne was a member of St. Peter’s Church and the Rosary and Altar Society at St. Peter’s Church.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Harold Smith; a son, Thomas Smith; three brothers, George "Pat", Thomas and Daniel Conlon.

Anne is survived by two sons, Robert Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; Dennis Smith and his wife Bette Durocher of Plattsburgh; a daughter, Angela Dillon and her husband Patrick of Peru; a sister, Theresa Carter and her husband Warren of Plattsburgh; seven grandchildren, Robert, James, Monica, Shari, Jodi Lynn, Shana and Kasey; two great-grandchildren, Caylie Godin and Paige Smith; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church. Interment will be next year in the family plot in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Members of the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Peter’s Church are asked to meet Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home.

Lloyd F. Banks Sr.

WESTPORT — Lloyd F. Banks Sr., 77, of Youngs Road, Westport, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

He was born June 17, 1926, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., the son of Lloyd and Florence (Moore) Banks.

Lloyd was a veteran of World War II and worked as a teamster for Local 456 in Elmsford, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Jane (Mooney) Banks of Westport; four sons, Lloyd F. Banks Jr. of Mt. Kisco, John and his wife Deborah of New Rochelle, N.Y., Robert T. of LaGrange, N.Y., and Jeffrey J. of Westport; one daughter, Kathleen Taylor and her husband Theodore of Westport; two sisters, Margaret Norton and Alice Gay, both of South Salem, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

Her parents; a sister, Jean Messina; and a daughter-in-law, Mary D. Banks, died earlier.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Marvin’s Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the funeral home. Burial will be in Essex County Veteran’s Cemetery in Wadhams.

Judith Iva Sperry

PLATTSBURGH — Judith (Judy) Sperry, 75, of 71F Cornelia Street, Plattsburgh, passed away, Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, with family at her side, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.

She was born on Friday, Feb. 24, 1928, in Saranac Lake, N.Y., the daughter of Harlan Francis and Edna Mae (Williams) Sperry.

After graduating from Saranac Lake High School in 1945, Judy attended New Rochelle Hospital School of Nursing from 1945 to 1948.

As a certified registered nurse, she worked at Saranac Lake General Hospital from 1948 to 1953, Syracuse Memorial Hospital for six years between 1954 and 1963 and CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh from 1965 until her retirement from nursing in 1976.

After retirement, Judy attended Our Lady of Victory Academy from 1983 to 1984 and graduated between honors and high honors.

From 1984 to 2001, she volunteered her time and work experiences to the Plattsburgh Community Outreach Center, Plattsburgh Nutrition, Joint Council for Economic Development and the Office of the Aging.

Judy had many hobbies and was quite accomplished in crocheting, needlepoint and embroidery. At various exhibitions over the years her works won many first place blue ribbons and best of shows.

Judy is survived her daughter and best friend, Laurie K. Annis of Plattsburgh and

Laurie’s companion of 22 years, James A. Duprey; one son, David M. Annis Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; her sister, Janice (Sperry) Annis of Plattsburgh; two nephews and one niece; one great-nephew and one great-niece.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, Harland F. Sparry, Jr. There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh an Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at 3 p.m.

Judy was loved and appreciated by many. She will be dearly missed — she already is.

Jerome Thomas Brockway Sr., 66, of State Route 37, Fort Covington, N.Y., died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, with his loving family and Hospice of the North Country at his side.

On June 28, 1937, he was given life by his parents, Harold and Ethel Been Brockway in Fort Covington.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home in Fort Covington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at noon at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Covington. Burial will be in the old St. Mary’s Cemetery in the spring.

CHARLES ALPHONSE TREMBLAY, 85, of Rue LaCaserne, Ste. Barbe, Quebec, Canada, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at Centre Hospitalier du Huntingdon where he had been a patient since October of 2003.

Born June 23, 1918, in LaMalbaie, Quebec, Canada the son of Joseph and Laure Bergeron Tremblay.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are through St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home, Inc., Malone, NY.

LEONARD C. JESSOP, 88, of the Jewish Nursing Home, Converse Street, Longmeadow, Mass., died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at that facility.

He was born May 23, 1915, in New Haven, Conn., the son of Charles and Kate Levine Jessop.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services and burial will take place in the spring and will be announced at that time.

Funeral arrangements are through St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home, Inc., 563 E. Main Street, Malone, NY.

EVA S. AGNEW, 97, formerly of Plattsburgh, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2003, at the Hallmark Nursing Home.

She was born on Dec, 7, 1904, the daughter of Charles and Delphine (Ano) Garrow.

A graveside service will be held in St. Peter’s Cemetery in the spring.

The R.W. Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
