Published: 11/21/03Gaylord E. MattonMooers — Mr. Gaylord E. Matton, 62, of the Garrand Road, Mooers, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at the Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, Pa. He was born in Altona, N.Y., on May 17, 1941, the son of Salim and Alice (Clark) Matton. After attending school in Altona, he worked for the Clinton County Highway Department and at Altona Central School as a bus driver and custodian. Gaylord joined the U.S. Army and served two years active duty and three years in the reserves during Vietnam. He was active in the Altona Fire Department prior to 1968. Gaylord retired from Wyeth-Ayerest in Rouses Point after 25 years of service. He attended the Altona Nazarene Church where he was a Sunday school teacher, trustee and board member. Later he joined the Mooers Wesleyan Church where he was a board member and he was a member of the Wesleyan Men. Gaylord served on the Board of Directors of the Mooers Camp Meeting Association. When he was in Pennsylvania, he attended the First Wesleyan Church of Willow Grove. He served as Den Leader and Assistant Scout Master of Troop 37, Mooers. Gaylord was very family oriented. He loved hunting, fishing, wood crafts, camping and golf with his family. He greatly loved his grandchildren and will be greatly missed by those who loved him. Gaylord was predeceased by his parents, Salim and Alice Matton; his brother Darrell; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman and Frances Boas. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Cynthia (Boas) Matton; they were married July 26, 1969, at Altona Nazarene Church. He has three sons, Jonathan and Madeline (Perez) Matton of Levittown, Pa., and their children Giselle and Elias Perez, James and Joan (Lindquist) Matton of Fairless Hill, Pa., and their children Julia and Jadyn Matton and Joel and Jennifer (Brown) Matton of Hatboro, Pa., and their children Christopher, Shane and Isabella Matton; a brother, Ronald Matton and his wife Margaret of Plattsburgh; a sister, Shirley Silver and her husband Raymond of Massena; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Altona. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Mooers Wesleyan Church. Interment will follow in the family plot in the Union Cemetery in Mooers. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to the Mooers Wesleyan Church Missionary Fund or the Mooers Rescue Squad. Lila A. GuayPlattsburgh — Mrs. Lila A. Guay, 101, formerly of Le Clair Mobile Home Park on Miller Street, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at the Meadowbrook Health Care Facility with her family by her side. She was born in Derrick, N.Y., on Feb. 27, 1902, the daughter of Louis and Emma Kate (Rule) LaBarge. Lila married Armand Louis Guay on Oct. 31, 1923, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Piercefield, N.Y., where they made their home until moving to Harrisville, N.Y. They later made their home in Plattsburgh. Lila was a gifted artist of tatting, creating doilies and tablecloths. She was best known for her Christmas cookies. She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Emma Kate Guay; her husband, Armand Joseph Guay; two sons, Armand Louis Guay Jr. and Wesley Wilfred Guay; her brother, Amos LaBarge; her sisters, Mable Lesperance, Alice Kinneston and Stella Hickey; and a grandson, Richard Guay. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara J. Fredette and her husband R.J. "Freddy" of Plattsburgh; her grandchildren, Lonnie Fredette, Laurie Ralph, Larry Fredette, Lloyd Fredette, Leslie Fredette, Robert Guay, Catherine Lanci, David Guay, Thomas Guay, William Guay, Barbara Panecia and Virginia Rexon; 25 grandchildren; two great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Saturday from noon until 1:45 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Church. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Friends wishing may have Masses said in her memory. Marion Kathleen (Villmore) TuthillCrown Point — Marion Kathleen (Villmore) Tuthill, 80, of Crown Point, beloved mother and friend, went home to the arms of the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, after a long illness from emphysema and osteoporosis. Marion was in the loving care of her daughter, family and dedicated Hospice and North Country Home Health caregivers. She was born on Feb. 28, 1923, in Fort Edward, N.Y., the daughter of the late Edwin and Kathleen Smith Villmore (Rhoades). Marion left high school during World War II to work in Buffalo for Pratt-Whitney, making aircraft parts and components to help support her family. She married Charles F. Tuthill on Aug. 4, 1941. Together they had four children, Edwin Charles Tuthill, Diane Mavis Flannagan, Charleen Ann Tuthill and Loren "Bobo" Rolland Tuthill. Marion and Charles worked in Long Lake, N.Y., for many years where they owned and operated the Long Lake Inn. They were also caretakers for Deerland Park in Long Lake. Marion is remembered by her family and friends for her creativity in arts and crafts. She loved to crochet, paint, spin wool and weave tapestries. She loved animals and children. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles F. Tuthill on Oct. 17, 1978; and also by one son, Loren "BoBo" Rolland Tuthill on July 25, 1985; and one daughter, Diane Mavis Flannagan on July 11, 1997. Survivors include one son, Edwin C. Tuthill of Crown Point; one daughter, Charleen A. Tuthill of Ticonderoga; one sister, Anna Towne of Crown Point; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. Gerald K. DouglasWaterford, N.Y. — Gerald K. Douglas of Fonda Road died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born on March 18, 1925, in Lake Placid to Frederick H. and Anna (Disco) Douglass. He graduated from Lake Placid High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Plattsburgh State Teacher’s College and a master’s degree from Columbia University. He took graduate credits from the University Colleges in Albany, Plattsburgh and Oswego and the College of St. Rose. He taught junior-senior high school in Rhinebeck, Woodmere and Northport, L.I., and elementary and junior-senior high school in Waterford, N.Y. He was the last principal of School II in Northside and School III on Hudson River Road and was the first full time elementary principal in Waterford. He and his wife Joyce were leaders in the effort to consolidate the three public schools into the present one. Mr. Douglas was a veteran of World War II and served as chief radar operator in the European Theater for two years and was on active duty in the famous Battle of the Bulge. He was past president of the Waterford Lions Club, Waterford Historical Museum, Capital Area Principals of Elementary Schools and the Delta Club of the Capital District. He had life memberships in New York State University College at Plattsburgh, Waterford-Halfmoon PTA, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5800 in Waterford and was a member of SAANYS, the American Legion and the Cohoes-Waterford Lodge of Elks. Mr. Douglas was husband of the late Joyce (Herron) Douglas, who died in 1990. He is survived by a loving companion, Elizabeth Malone of Waterford; a son, Garry Douglas of Plattsburgh; a sister, Frances Silleck of Lake Placid; a brother, Frederick Douglas of Camarillo, Calif.; and granddaughter Emily Douglas. Two sisters, Gladys Swift and Marie Goodsell; and a brother, Roderick Douglas, predecease him. A graveside committal service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Agnes Cemetery in Lake Placid. Memorial contributions may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Waterford Rescue Squad in care of the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., Waterford, NY 12188. WAYNE C. STRONG, 55, of Palmer Street, AuSable Forks, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh. He was born Dec. 16, 1947, in Plattsburgh, the son of Charles Sr. and Doris (Havens) Strong. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the AuSable Forks United Methodist Church with the Rev. Virginia Pierce officiating. Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Catherine E. Bresee, 79, of Route 458, St. Regis Falls, N.Y., died Tuesday evening, Nov. 18, 2003, at her home while under the care of her family and High Peaks Hospice. She was born in Nicholville, N.Y., on Sept. 30, 1924, the daughter of the late Earl and Nancy (LaRose) Veio. Calling hours will be Monday from 1 until 2:45 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Tracey Golas officiating. Burial will be in the Southville Cemetery in Stockholm, N.Y. |
