Gordon Clark

AUSABLE FORKS — Gordon Russell Clark, 91, of AuSable Forks, passed away, Nov. 2, 2003, at the home of his daughter in Las Vegas, Nev., with his three children by his side.

He was born in AuSable Forks, N.Y., June 24, 1912, on the then Clark Farm on Route 9N. He was the son of Charles and Anna Jones Clark.

He was educated in the AuSable Forks Central School system while helping his mother run the farm and care for his brother and sisters.

He married Martha N. Baker of Harkness in 1937. They were married 55 years and had three children, Anne, Weslene and Barry.

Gordon worked at Eastern Tablet in Schenectady during the war years. Due to an injury, he and Marty moved back to the north country where he worked for three years at Aasgard Farm for Rockwell Kent. In 1944, he moved his family back to the Clark farmhouse and went to work for the town of Jay for 29 years as their chief grader operator. He was a diligent worker and many folks in the AuSable and Jay area can well remember that he was there to plow them out when the storms were so bad they probably wouldn’t have gotten to work otherwise. He was always willing to assist someone in need. He retired in 1973 after working under several town supervisors, including Ray Williams, John Straight, Max Thwaits and Tom Douglas.

Gordon is survived by his three children and their spouses, Anne Jaynes of Anchorage, Ak., and Las Vegas, Nev., Weslene Goodman and her husband Jim of Palmer, Ak., and Barry Clark and his wife Brenda of AuSable Forks, N.Y.; also his grandchildren, Paul Elmore of Virginia Beach, Va., Ron Elmore of Palmer, Ak., Danice Brister of Anchorage, Ak., Jana Sue Clark and Lianne Stevens of Keeseville, N.Y.; there are also seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Grace Thompson of Portland, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marty, in 1992; his granddaughter, Pamela Dooley in 2003; and his brother, Earl Clark; and sisters, Augusta Baldwin, Mabel Clark and Ethel Sprague.

Gordon loved his family and was a devoted husband and father. He looked forward to traveling with Marty and made many, many trips to Alaska, twice traveling the Alcan Highway.

Cremation was provided by Palm Mortuary of Las Vegas and Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home of AuSable Forks. There will be no services at this time.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon’s name can be made to the Methodist Church in AuSable Forks, N.Y.
