Helena G. Hogan Speck

Schroon Lake — Helena G. Hogan Speck, age 82, of Route 9, Schroon Lake, N.Y., passed away in the Glens Falls Hospital, early Sunday morning, Oct. 19, 2003, following a long illness.

Helena was born in Mineville, July 25, 1921, daughter of the late George and Nellie (Grogan) Lycett.

She lived most of her life in the Schroon Lake area and was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake.

Predeceased by her parents previously mentioned; a sister, Margaret Hamby; her first husband, William Hogan, who died in 1966; her second husband, David Speck who died in 1991.

She is survived by two sons, Patrick Hogan of Schroon Lake and Michael Hogan and his wife Gail of Sanford, N.C.; two daughters, Colleen French and Catherine Hogan and her husband Dr. Michael Kalos, MD of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Frances Bogle of Schroon Lake; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Helena’s request, there will be no calling hours.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Richard Sturtz, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations are to be made to the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad in Mrs. Speck’s memory.

Arrangements have been entrusted with the Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette Street, Queensbury.

Patricia A. Raymo

Massena, NY — Patricia A. Raymo, 68, of West Orvis Street, Massena, N.Y., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at her residence.

She was born, July 28, 1935, in Massena, N.Y., daughter of the late Warren G. and Alice (McCarthy) McElwain.

She graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in 1953.

Patricia married Dennis A. Raymo at the Church of Visitation in Norfolk, N.Y., by Father Francis Conners, June 26, 1954. He predeceased her Jan. 3, 2001.

She owned and operated Raymo’s General Store in Moira, N.Y., and Tri-Town Liquor Store in Winthrop for several years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Massena Senior Citizens, Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce, Home Bureau of Norfolk, Women’s Democratic Club of Norfolk and was a former member of the Altar and Rosary Society at the Church of Visitation in Norfolk. She was a church school instructor, volunteer at St. Joseph’s Church for many activities and she enjoyed crafts, reading and was a loving and devoted grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters; Keeley and Steven Dunshee of Potsdam, N.Y., and Denise Raymo of North Lawrence, N.Y., two sons; Danny J. and Joni Raymo of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Dennis A. Raymo Jr. of Lansing, Mich.; two sisters, Betty Wells of Massena, N.Y., and Carol Feldott of Naperville, Ill., and three brothers; Warren and Mildred McElwain of Merrimack, N.H., Gerald and Linda McElwain of Bombay, N.Y., and Donald McElwain of Waddington, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Christopher Dunshee of Potsdam, Shena and Shane Raymo of Plattsburgh, and Charles and Anna Raymo of Lansing, Mich.

She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Dennis A. Raymo; one grandson, Andrew Raymo; a sister-in-law, Carolyn McElwain; and a nephew, Kevin Wells.

Calling hours were held Monday at the Donaldson Funeral Home in Massena, N.Y. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Alan D. Shnob.

Donations in Patricia’s memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Church Memorial Fund, Massena, N.Y.

Lilly Ekseth Dunham Pitha

LAKE PLACID — Lilly Ekseth Dunham Pitha (Red), 80, a resident of Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2003.

She was born in Bjugn, Norway, Jan. 7, 1923, she immigrated to the United States with her family in 1931. She became a naturalized citizen. She was the daughter of Ole Meier Ekseth and Anna Karen Johansen.

She graduated from South Kortright Central School in Stanford, N.Y., in 1942.

She married Horace Kenneth Dunham, plant manager for Bell Telephone in the Plattsburgh and tri-lakes area. They had six children and resided in Oneonta, N.Y., and later in Port Kent, N.Y., where they owned the Historic Landmark house known as the Watson Manor.

Staying at home and raising her six children, she worked over the years at Mitchell’s Ski Shop and Bell Telephone in Plattsburgh. After the loss of her first husband, Ken Dunham, she was married in 1974 to Robert C. Pitha, an engineer working for the state of New York. They lived in New York City for a few years where she worked on Wall Street. When Robert retired, they moved to Havelock, N.C., for a few years. Returning to the Adirondacks and their family, they lived in Upper Jay on the site of the old Land of Make Believe on the AuSable River. Over the following years she worked at Sundog and the Christmas Shop in Lake Placid and Asplin Tree Farm in Gabriel’s.

Lilly, known by most as "Red", with her red hair and fair skin, loved to ski, hike, camp, tend her vegetable and flower gardens, cook and care for her dogs, cats, goats and rabbits. She especially loved to entertain her family and friends with wonderful displays of food that she cooked.

She is survived by her younger sister, Ethel Looye Rao of Bristol, Conn.; her older brother, Oed Ekseth and his wife Marie of Crown Point; her sons, Allen Dunham and his wife Charlene of Saranac Lake, Dennis Dunham of North Carolina, Mark Dunham and his wife Cheryl of Plattsburgh and Scot Dunham and his wife Patty of New Jersey; her daughter, Beverly Detwiler and her husband Steve Detwiler of Lake Placid; her seven grandchildren; Todd Dunham and his wife Sara of Saranac Lake, Kimberly Dunham Brendli and her husband Rich of New Jersey, Kristen Dunham and her husband of Rochester, Kelley Dunham of Plattsburgh, Heather Dunham, Erin Dunham and David Dunham, all of Plattsburgh; and her great-grandchildren, Natasha Brendli and Justin Brendli of New Jersey; her cousins in Norway, Snorre Johansen and his wife Monne, and their children, Bjorg and Arne Vetlesen, Ruth and Hans Hovde and Agnes and Knut Haagensen and their families.

She is predeceased by her first husband, H. Kenneth Dunham; her son, Lynn (Rusty) Dunham; her brother, Gunnar Ekseth; her sister, Connie Ekseth Harvey; and her second husband, Robert Pitha, who passed away in January, 2001. Both Ken and Bob were veterans of World War II.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday with burial in the Port Kent Cemetery to follow.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid or the Tri- Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake.

Robert Prunier

Plattsburgh — Mr. Robert Prunier, 87, of Lafayette Street, Plattsburgh, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Plattsburgh on Sept. 21, 1916, son of the late Edward and Cecelia (Lemieux) Prunier.

He was a graduate from MAI.

Robert worked for the Bel-Air Aircraft Plant in Niagara Falls during World War II. He worked at the Rosebud Dairy and Levy Brothers before retiring from the Plattsburgh City School District in 1978. Robert had a radio and TV repair shop at his home on Lafayette Street for many years. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Irene P.G. Soulia of Plattsburgh and Jean and Hugh Calhoun of Meridan, Conn.; nine grandchildren, Suzanne Garrow of Morrisonville, Patricia A. Trombley of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Dianna M. Spencer of Baldwinsville, Raymond R. Garrow II of Peru, Sharron L. Gibbs of Cummings, Ga., Jacqueline Vachon of Meridan, Conn., Andrea Cole of Meridan, Conn., Terri Prunier of Plattsburgh and Sarah Prunier of Plattsburgh, 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert is predeceased by his wife Frances Donah Prunier; two sons, James Edward Prunier and Robert Frank Prunier; one brother, Charles Prunier; one sister, Mabel Irene Prunier; three grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. from the Brown Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
