Published: 09/12/03Marjorie M. VarmetteTiconderoga — Marjorie M. Varmette, 82, of the Portage, passed away Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at the Moses-Ludington Nursing Home of Ticonderoga. She was born in Ticonderoga, May 9, 1921, the daughter of the late Addison and Lillian (Cook) Miller. Mrs. Varmette was a lifelong Ticonderoga resident. She is fondly remembered for entertaining family and friends in her home and discussing current events over coffee. She was an avid gardener and well-known bowler at the Adirondack Lanes in Ticonderoga. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold F. Varmette on Oct. 29, 1998. She is survived by three sons, John H. Varmette of Ticonderoga, Terry F. Varmette and his wife Janet of Saranac Lake, and Scott D. Varmette and his wife Brenda of Springwater; and one daughter, Sharon A. DeLorme and her husband Dayton of Lee, Mass.; and one sister, Shirley Knight of Ticonderoga. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; nine 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin Street, Ticonderoga. A funeral service will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga. The Rev. Paul L. Dufford Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga, will officiate. Burial will follow at the family plot of the Valley View Cemetery of Ticonderoga. Smith R. FrederickPlattsburgh — Mr. Smith R. Frederick, 73, of the Irish Settlement Road, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at his home. He was born in Plattsburgh, on March 21, 1930, son of the late Smith and Georgiana (Deso) Frederick. Smith is survived by his wife the former Patricia Bruce; one son and daughter-in-law, Francis and Chrissy Frederick of Peru; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Robin and Rod Fletcher of Plattsburgh, Tina and James Carroll of Plattsburgh and Diane and David Hurd of Schenectady; two stepdaughters, Susan Cooper of Peru and Sharon LaPorte of Peru; one stepson and a stepdaughter-in-law, Douglas and Cindy LaPorte of Plattsburgh; one brother and a sister-in-law, Gerald and Betty Frederick of Plattsburgh; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow in the Brown Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. San Soucy, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Schuyler Falls Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of the North Country. Bertha M. FountainSchuyler Falls — Mrs. Bertha M. "Bert" Fountain, 64, of the Fox Farm Road, Schuyler Falls, passed away Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y., on Oct. 6, 1938, the daughter of John E. and Elizabeth (Short) Bishop Sr. Bertha had been a nurses aide at Meadowbrook Health Care Facility in Plattsburgh. She enjoyed crafts, cross stitch, bingo but most importantly being with her children and grandchildren. Bertha and her husband Horace were foster parents to many children. She was a member of St. Augustine’s Church in Peru. Bertha was predeceased by her parents John E. and Elizabeth Bishop Sr.; her son, David; and her brothers, George and Robert "Butch" Bishop. She is survived by her husband of 45 Years, Horace Fountain of Schuyler Falls. They were married Feb. 5, 1958, at St. Peter’s Church, Plattsburgh. She is also survived by her children, Diane Katzfey and her husband Donald of Schuyler Falls, Gail Fountain of Schuyler Falls, Gerald Fountain and his wife Richelle of Plattsburgh; her sisters, Bernice Cressey of Plattsburgh, Martha Rusciani of New Jersey, Frances Gushlaw and her husband Ernie of Florida, Rita Ramsey and her husband Jim of Kansas, Patricia Trott of Plattsburgh, Faith Haight and her husband Robert of Schenectady, Linda Darrah and her husband Richard of Plattsburgh; her brothers, John Bishop Jr. and his wife Judy of Plattsburgh, James Bishop Sr. and his wife Anne of Plattsburgh; a half brother, Larry Velie and his wife Judy of Plattsburgh; her sisters-in-law, Joan Bishop of Plattsburgh, Betty Bishop of Peru; five grandchildren, Joseph, Bethany, Christina, Kyle and Brenton; several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. from St. Augustine’s Church with the Rev. Gilbert Menard, celebrating. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Dorothy L. FaganLake Placid — Dorothy L. Fagan, 88, of Grandview Ave, Lake Placid, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid. She was born in Antwerp, N.Y., March 12, 1915, the daughter of James and Marjorie (Houghton) Lathan. Dorothy married John L. Fagan in Lake Placid, in February of 1938. John died Aug. 3, 1995. Mrs. Fagan was a graduate of Claxton-Hepburn School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse at Placid Memorial Hospital in Lake Placid. Dot and her husband John (Bud) Fagan owned and operated Fagan’s Motel in Lake Placid for 27 years. Dorothy was a devoted member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Lake Placid. Mrs. Fagan is survive by a daughter, Mary Jane Colby of Lake Placid; and one sister, Shirley Helbach of Florida. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jarrod Colby and his wife Theresa of Lake Placid, Matthew Colby and his wife Liane of Lake Placid, Jeremy Colby and his wife Stephanie of Saranac Lake, Katie Colby of Lake Placid, Kelley Compton of Grantham, N.H., and John Fagan Jr. of Rutland, Vt. There are four great-grandchildren, Ellie, Brendan, Jack and Kamryn; A daughter-in-law, Mary Fagen; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Fagan, also surviving. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; her husband; a son, John M. Fagan; two sisters, Elizabeth DeFranco and Phyllis Lathan; and one brother, James Lathan. Calling hours will be held at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid, Friday, Sept. 12, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. A bible vigil will be held at the funeral home at 7:45 p.m. Rev. Patrick O’Reilly will officiate. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Rev. J. Michael Gaffney and Rev. Patrick O’Reilly will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. The family suggests donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department or the Lake Placid Police Department. John G. BrewsterRainbow Lake, NY — John G. Brewster, 81, formerly Rainbow Lake, N.Y., died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. He was born on Sorrel Street, Vermontville, N.Y., on June 20, 1922, the son of Ross and Dorothy (Skiff) Brewster. He married Johanna Gallo on Nov. 28, 1961, in Elkton, Md. Mr. Brewster had been employed as a driver for the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department for several years and then owned and operated Brewster’s Gulf Service Station in Saranac Lake for 10 years. He later worked as a machinist in Champlain, N.Y., and in Portsmouth, N.H., until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Brewster had also worked as a teacher in Portsmounth, N.H., teaching young people to be machinist at a technical college. After his retirement he continued to work as a real estate agent for Century-21 in New Hampshire. Mr. Brewster served one term as mayor of the Village of Saranac Lake in the early 1970’s and was a 30 year member and past chief of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Brewster was also involved with and helped establish the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Johanna Brewster of Lake Placid, N.Y.; one daughter, Deborah Bowersock of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; four stepchildren, William Bailey, Terry Bailey, Barbara Faulkner and Cindy Lamthier, all of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; one brother, Elmer Brewster of Bloomingdale, N.Y.; and one stepbrother William Lewis of Winston, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one niece also survive. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Burl Laramee and Judy Woodruff; one brother, Charles Brewster; and two granddaughters Katherine Laramee and Kristine Phelan. Calling hours will be held at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Inc. on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A firemen’s prayer service will take place Friday evening at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at the funeral home, with Rev. Mark Demars officiating. Burial will follow at North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid. Friends wishing to remember John Brewster may make memorial contributions to Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department or the Uihlein Mercy Center in care of the funeral home. Evalina GriffinLEWIS — Evalina Griffin, 84, of Lewis entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003. Evalina ws born in Lewis on Feb. 16, 1919, the daughter of Fred and Nellie (Marble) Griffin. Evalina ran her own diner for many years. She had room and boarding in her home for many years until her health started to fail. Evalina, although ill for many years, still continued to enjoy her family and friends, and always showed much interest in her community. Evalina is survived by a son, Richard "Corky" Griffin of Lewis; four foster children, Brenda Brownell of Piercefield, N.Y., Ann Patterson of Constable, N.Y., Chester Brunelle of Mexico, N.Y., and Lacey Brunell of Central Square, N.Y. Evalina is also survived by five grandchildren: Roger and Theresa Griffin of Lewis, John Griffin of Mahopac, N.Y., Lisa and Fred Colegrove of Lewis, Cheryl Estus of Elizabethtown and Angela Aubin of Jacksonville, Fla. Evalina also leaves behind six great-grandchildren; Samantha and Thoms Griffin, Marlaynah Montana, Kaitlyn Colegrove and Jonathan Schier. Evalina was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Belle Wrisley. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Marvin’s Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lewis Cemetery, Lewis, N.Y. |
