Arthur H. Pickard

Alburg Center, Vt. — Arthur H. Pickard, 87, a longtime resident of the Alburg Center Community, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 16, 2003, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

Arthur was born in Bethlehem, Penn., June 17, 1916, the son of the late Joseph C. and Louise (Hubbard) Pickard.

Orphaned at the age of 9 years Arthur was raised by his aunt, Elizabeth Parsons. She predeceased him in August of 2000. With Elizabeth’s assistance he was educated in early years in Boston at the Thompson Island Farm and Trade School. After receiving a four-sport scholarship, he transferred and later graduated from the Montpelier Seminary in Vermont. He later attended both Tufts University in Boston and the University of Vermont.

On May 23, 1942, he married the former Dorothy Rockwell, who survives him.

For 30 years Arthur worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in the Soil Conservation Service. Following his retirement, he became active throughout the Alburg Community and served as director of the Alburg Center Cemetery Association and town auditor. He was a former member of the Alburg Union Congregational Church and at the time of his death was a parishioner of The Old Stone United Methodist Church in Isle LaMotte.

He will be remembered for his love of round and square dancing and was a member of the Continental Round Dancers and Champlain Squares. He was also an avid bridge player, golfer and sailor. He enjoyed music and played trumpet most of his life and in earlier years was a regular on the Montpelier, Vt., radio station. Arthur was coach of the little league baseball team for many years. He coached the tri-town team that consisted of Alburg, Swanton and Highgate players that won two state championships in the late 1950’s.

Arthur faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1950 after being active with the 98th Infantry Artillery Band. He was a member of the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 in Alburg.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy of 61 years, Arthur leaves his daughters, Carol Pellerin of Alburg, Elizabeth Pickard and her husband Robert Fricke of Fairfield, Julie Brunell and her husband Dennis and Dorothy Brunell and her husband Hermon all of Chazy, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Arthur Pellerin and his wife Rita of Grand Isle and Katelyn, Drew and Kayse Brunell all of Chazy, N.Y. Also surviving are a nephew, John Timothy Hubbard and his wife Marsha of Richmond, Texas and two cousins, Claire Kolacz of Georgia and Nelson Dutton of North Chelmsford, Mass.

He was predeceased by a brother, John Frost Hubbard, (Robert Frost Pickard).

Arthur’s family wishes to give very special thanks to the staff on McClure 5 at Fletcher Allen Health Care for the excellent care and support given during these past several days.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at 2 p.m. from The Old Stone United Methodist Church in Isle La Motte Village. The Reverend Debora Laporte will officiate. Interment will follow in the Pickard family lot in the Alburg Center Cemetery. Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Carolyn G. Duplessis

Scriba — Carolyn G. Duplessis, 69, of County Route 57, Scriba, entered into rest Aug. 16. 2003 at her home.

She was born in Elizabethtown, Essex County, N.Y., the daughter of the late Harvey and Florance (Smart) Gauthier.

She was employed at Norton Insurance Agency in Elizabethtown until marriage to James Duplessis in 1971. Moved to Oswego where she worked at McDonough, McCormack and Wright before going to work in Syracuse, N.Y., with the Phil Kelley Agency. They subsequently merged with Haylor, Freyer & Coon. She then became an employee of H.F.C. transferring to the Fitzgibbon’s Branch in Oswego, N.Y. She retired from there in December 1999. She achieved both her CPCU and C.I.C. Designations prior to her retirement. She has been president of Person to Person Citizen Advocacy, Syracuse Federation of Women’s Clubs, Independent Agents of C.N.Y. Inc., NYS insurance Professionals, YWCA of Syracuse and Ononadaga County, Hiawatha Seaway Council B.S.A. Advocates for girls Inc., Onondaga Guild to Vail Dyne, N.Y. Centrals, Adirondack Chapter 677 O.E.S. and Iris Society of C.N.Y. Helped in organizations of Women’s Fund of C.N.Y. Inc. Was State Insurance Professional Women’s of the Year in 1981.

She was a avid gardner, reader, crafter, enjoyed many friends and projects to help women. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially in the motor home "The Moose".

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, James Duplessis of Oswego; two sons, Larry J. MacDougal and Terry and Francine MacDougal, all of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; two stepsons, Michael and Kim Duplessis and Mark Duplessis of Oswego; one stepdaughter, Michele and Jamie Torbitt of Oswego; one sister, Genevieve R. Smith of Albany, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grand-daughter, Meghan Samples.

She is predeceased by a husband, Douglas J. MacDaugal (1969) and son Keeey R. MacDougal in 2000.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Minetto. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday from Nelson Funeral Home, 124 West Fifth Street, Oswego. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Elizabethtown, N.Y.

Calling hours 4 to 7 p.m.. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the W.M. Marvin’s Son Inc., Funeral Home, Elizabethtown, N.Y. Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Elizabethtown, N.Y.

Barbara E. Drinkwine

Crown Point, NY — Barbara E. Drinkwine, 79, of Crown Point, N.Y., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at the Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, N.Y.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Brown) Vaughn.

Barbara was a greeter at Wal-Mart Supercenter, Ticonderoga. A member and past president of Knapp Senior Citizens, Crown Point, N.Y.

She is survived by her husband, Roderick Drinkwine; her son, Joseph Drinkwine and wife Bernadette of Rehoboth, Mass.; her daughters, Peggy Stevens and husband Gary of Crown Point, Theresa Landry and husband Timothy of Crown Point; her brothers, William Vaughan of Las Vegas, Nev., Charles Vaughn of San Jose, Calif.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grand-daughter.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home, Port Henry, N.Y. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church Crown Point, N.Y., Rev. Brian Kimble officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to the A.E Phelps Fire & Rescue, Fire Company or Ambulance Squad.

Death Notices

Deborah A. Imhoff, 49, of the Felton Road, Schuyler Falls, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Schenectady, N.Y., Sept. 2, 1953.

Calling hours will be private and at the convenience of the family. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at West Chazy Rural Cemetery in West Chazy, with Rev. William Reamer, Chaplain of the CVPH Medical Center, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru.

Ida B. Giddings, 84, of Keeseville Country Gardens, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Hamilton Funeral Home.
