Bernadette Marie Josephe Richardson

West Whately, Mass. — Bernadette Marie Josephe (Proton) Richardson, 64, of Conway Road, West Whately, Mass., died Saturday Aug. 9, 2003, at home.

She was born in Fontaineblean, France, Sept. 24, 1938, the daughter of the late Louis Joseph Marie and Denise Marie Jeanne (Lambert) Proton.

She was self educated in France and was very well read. She moved to the United States 40 years and taught French at Towerhill School in Wilmington, Del., for 20 years. Prior to that she taught French at the Solebury School in Solebury, Pa., for eight years. After retiring in 2000, she moved to Chateaugay, N.Y., to a home she designed herself. She was a published writer of short stories. She loved literature, the arts and nature. Most important to her were her family and friends with whom she shared her unending sense of humor, her vast enjoyment of life and her great capacity for warmth and affection. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love.

She is survived by her daughter, Gisele Anasthasia Richardson and her partner Julianna Carol Waggoner of West Whately; a son Remi Etienne Proton of Wilmington, Del.; four brothers, Dominique Proton, Raphael Proton, Didier-Edmond Proton and Yan Proton; and a sister, Donatienne (Proton) Honnorat, all of France; a granddaughter, Gianne Katerina Bucci of Newtown Square, Pa.

The funeral will be held Wednesday morning 9:30 a.m. from the Ahearn Funeral Home in Northampton, Mass., followed by a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary's Church in Northampton at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery in Florence.

Calling hours are Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m.

M. Elsie Barnaby

PLATTSBURGH — M. Elsie Barnaby, 80, of Truman Avenue, Plattsburgh, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility.

She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on Feb. 2, 1923, the daughter of Rudolph and Edith (Myette) Ebare.

Mrs. Barnaby was a member of St. Peter's Church.

She worked at the Champlain Valley Hospital and then at CVPH Medical Center for 33 years until retiring in 1983.

Survivors include two sons, Raymond Barnaby and his wife Bernadette of Jenicho, N.Y., and Robert Barnaby and his wife Jean of Plattsburgh; two daughters, Gloria Guimond and Mrs. William (Cecelia) Guilbo both of Plattsburgh; one sister, Cecelia Horsler of Plattsburgh; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Richard Barnaby; one daughter, Maryann Guerin; and two sisters, Gladys Lashway and Meredes Gero.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Katherine E. Rowlson

Plattsburgh — Katherine E. "Precious Katie" Rowlson, 78, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Born in Plattsburgh on Oct. 16, 1924, she was the daughter of Ira and Elizabeth (Marshall) Rowlson.

Katie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Plattsburgh. She was a former telephone operator in Miami Beach, Fla., and in Plattsburgh. She also worked as district office supervisor at John Hancock Insurance in Plattsburgh for 35 years. Katie was also a former bowler in the North Bowl Senior League.

Survivors include her brother, Ira A. Rowlson Jr. of Plattsburgh; and 9 loving nieces and nephews, Alan, Chris and Romeyn Rowlson, Rebecca Witkowski, Elizabeth Christensen, Katherine Burr, Deborah Andrews, Susan Lamar and Lewis M. Andrews III.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in East Beekmantown Cemetery at the family's convenience.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the East Beekmantown Cemetery c/o Ray Dominy, 54 Ashley Road, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.

Arrangements are with the O'Neill-Redden-Drown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

John Brendan Costello

Hague — John Brendan Costello, 19, of Summit Drive, Hague, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care of Burlington, Vt.

He was born in Middlebury, Vt., Nov. 23, 1983, the son of Timothy C. and Karen (Matthews) Costello of Hague.

John was a resident of Hague for all of his life. He was a graduate of Ticonderoga High School, class of 2002, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was also a member of the Ticonderoga High School Cross Country Team and the Golf Team.

Most recently, John was a student at Adirondack Community College where he was majoring in music. He was a disc jockey for the college's radio station and also worked in the school's art gallery.

Currently he was employed at Silver Bay Association.

John was an avid reader. He enjoyed listening to all types of music, playing guitar and drumming around a bonfire with friends. He loved cross country skiing, hiking, walking his dogs, biking, swimming, and communing with nature and his family.

Survivors in addition to his parents; include his brother, W. Tavish Costello of Hague; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Relatives and friends may call Wednesday from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Costello residence at 264 Summit Drive in Hague. A memorial service will take place at the Silver Bay Association Auditorium on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. The Rev. Bruce Tamlyn and the Rev. George Fleming, will officiate.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Hague. The Rev. George Fleming, pastor, will officiate. The Rite of Committal will follow at the family plot of the May Memorial Cemetery of Hague.

A gathering at the Costello Home will follow after the funeral on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, you may lend a helping hand to your neighbor or send a donation to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga.

Barbara C. Jones

Plattsburgh — Mrs. Barbara C. Jones, 75, of Lakeside Court, Cliff Haven, Plattsburgh, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at her home with her family at her side.

She was born in White Plains, N.Y., on May 31, 1928, the daughter of Jerry and Mildred (Watkins) Carideo.

Barbara was known for her generosity, volunteering at Planned Parenthood, where she was honored with volunteer of the year for 1999. She served as treasurer for Trout Unlimited for 14 years and had worked the polls on Election Day for many years. Barbara gave financial support to many organizations, such as The Names Project, The Holocaust Museum and any of the neighborhood children who were conducting fund drives. She had worked for the Alcohol Information and Referral Center, Syscoms and retired from A & M Development. She was very active in the Cliff Haven community where she lived for 42 years. Over the years her "titles" included the Egg Lady, the Keeper of the Snake and Leader of Girl Scout Troop 149.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Jerry and Mildred Carideo; and a son, Peter Jones.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth Jones of Cliff Haven; three daughters, Deborah Jones, Katie Jones and Melissa Joyce and her husband James; a sister, Mildred "Milme" Hoag and her husband Russell; her grandchildren, Stephanie Joyce; Daniel Joyce, Matthew Adams, Kimberly Rojas and Keith Rojas; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive guests Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Heller, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Plattsburgh, officiating.

In lieu of flowers friends wishing may make donations to Hospices of the North Country, the Aids Council of Northeastern New York or Northern Adirondack Planned Parenthood.

Rev. Robert B. Pond, 77, of Asheville, N.C., died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in Solace Hospice Center, following a year long battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Malone.

Calling hours were held at St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield on July 18. A funeral service was held at the church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave on July 19. A memorial service was held July 20 at St. Giles Chapel.

The Groce Funeral Home, Asheville, N.C., was in charge of arrangements.
