Published: 07/22/03Robert L. HapgoodAurora, Colo. — Robert L. Hapgood, 79, of Heather Gardens, Aurora, Colo., died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at The Medical Center of Aurora, South. He was born in Malone on May 12, 1924, the son of Lemuel and Frances (Merrill) Hapgood. He was raised in East Rochester and immediately after graduation entered the U.S. Army, serving five years and 15 years with the U.S. Air Force. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge and during his career served in Germany, Scotland, England, France, Luxembourg, Northern Italy and Japan. Mr. Hapgood earned two Bronze Stars, the Distinguished Unit Emblem, American Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal-German Clasps, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, World War II Victory Medal, European-Asiatic-Middle East Campaign Ribbon, Medal for Human Action, Air Force Longevity Service Award with Four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and the Good Conduct Medal with Silver Leafs. Upon his retirement from the military, he settled in Colorado where he was employed as an accountant for the Rockybilt System and was an insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual and Massachusetts Mutual. In later years, he took a position with the State of Colorado as a controller for oil, gas and mineral industries in Colorado. He retired in 1987 as Deputy Register, Colorado State Board of Land Commissioners. He was also a member of the Denver Association of Petroleum Landmen. Mr. Hapgood was a direct descendent of two North Country pioneer families; on his father’s side, Jonathon Hapgood, who came to the Malone area from Vermont in 1796 and of Paul Merrill, who arrived here around 1823, from Gilmanton, N.H. His great-grandfather, Darius Merrill, established the hamlet of Merrill on Upper Chateaugay Lake. His wife of 45 years, the former Maria Anne Schaupp of Landsberg, Germany, predeceased him in 1996. He is survived by a sister, Jean Caswell of Churubusco; three nephews, Casey Caswell of Churubusco, Francis Caswell of Waterloo and Ron Schaupp of Rockford, Ill.; five nieces, Amy Howe of Vernon, Vt., Linda Caswell and Heather Vermillera, both of Lakeland, Fla., Holly Caswell of Brattleboro, Vt., and Annabella Barrett of Rockford, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Schaupp of Rockford, Ill.; and many, many cousins. At his request, there will be no memorial service. Mr. Hapgood and his wife Mary were buried June 20, 2003, at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colo. Death Notices Doran Frank Lester, 88, of 99 Sixth Ave., Ilion, N.Y., died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home. He was born March 3, 1915, in Conifer, N.Y., the son of George and Mary Ellen (Doran) Lester. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church. Burial will take place in Notre Dame Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are through St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home, Inc. Orphia Robinson Zawadski, 77, of Bayberry Road, Old Saybrook, Conn., and formerly of Malone, N.Y., died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Clinic, Essex, Conn. She was born in Malone on Dec. 6, 1925, the daughter of the late Joseph and Sadie (Peach) Robinson. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2003, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Constable, with the Rev. Francis Flynn officiating. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery in Malone. Arrangements are through the Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service, Inc. of Malone. Charles D. "Buck" Gallo, 82, of Riverside Drive, Lake Placid, passed away on July 20, 2003, at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. He was born on Aug. 23, 1920, in Lake Placid, N.Y., the son of Belle (Johnson) and Charles Gallo. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. An American Legion prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home on Thursday, July 24, 2003. Burial will follow at the North Elba Cemetery. Aaron C. Boyea, 20, of Canaan Road, Ellenburg Depot, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. He was born in Plattsburgh on Feb. 12, 1983, the son of Brian and Barbara (Handschuh) Boyea. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. Rev. Joseph Wheelock will conduct a vigil service at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edmund’s Church in Ellenburg. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Pauline Hall Doyle, 95, of South Hill Road, Long Lake, died at her home on July 19, 2003. She was born in Long Lake on June 22, 1908, the daughter of the late Asa Benjamin and Ella (Sherman) Hall. Friends may call on Tuesday, July 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. at St. Henry’s Parish Center in Long Lake. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23 at St. Henry’s Church with Rev. Peter Borg officiating. Burial will follow in Long Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Richer Funeral Home, Tupper Lake, N.Y. |
