Miller, 89, formerly of AuSable Forks, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Clinton County Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since May 9, 1998. She was born in Clayburg on Jan. 9, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Mildred (Shumway) Stewart. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Marion is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Barbara Miller of Massachusetts; Gerald and Althea Miller of AuSable Forks; Charles and Sally Miller of Milton, Vt.; five daughters, Patricia Skelton and companion, Glen Clausen, of Plattsburgh; Mary Miller of Plattsburgh; Janis and Ron LaHart of Keeseville; Susan Kusalonis and companion, James of Schenectady; and Helen Harris of Troy; one brother, Calvin Stewart of Plattsburgh; one sister, Frances Witherwax of Springdale, AK; one sister-in-law, Mary Stiles of Morrisonville; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by the following: her husband, Emmett Miller, whom she married July 7, 1931, and who died in 1969; her parents; three brothers, Charles, Orville and Robert; two sisters, Lillian and Mildred; and one granddaughter, Althea Davies. Calling hours will be Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church in AuSable Forks. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorials may be made in Marion’s memory to the Clinton County Nursing Home Activity Fund, 16 Flynn Avenue, Plattsburgh. Betty Eleanor BrownBURKE — Betty Eleanor Brown, 69, of Mill Street, Burke, died Sunday, July 20, 2003 at her home in the care of her family and friends. Born in Whitesville, N.Y., on Oct. 22, 1933, she was the daughter of Seymore and Helen (Pfeiffer) Brown. Ms. Brown is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Youngs of Burke; Janice and Richard Libson of Potsdam; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father in 1952, her mother in 1992, a sister, Barbara Premo in 1959, and a brother, Stanton Brown, in 2003. Ms. Brown graduated from Chateaugay High School in 1951 and then graduated from Potsdam State University in 1954. She earned a master’s degree from Plattsburgh State. She taught school from 1954 to 1956 in Balston Spa. For five years she was a missionary in South America with Wycliff Bible. After returning to New York, Ms. Brown taught in Malone for one year in 1961. She then taught in the Beekmantown School District as a kindergarten teacher for 26 years, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed spending time at her camp on Chateaugay Lake in the summer. She was a member of the Chateaugay Presbyterian Church, Retired Teachers Association, Golden Age Club of Malone and Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club. Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral services will follow in the Funeral Home chapel at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Derek Trudell officiating. Burial will take place at Eastside Cemetery, Chateaugay. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Burke Rescue Squad or Burke Fire Department. Lawrence W. GonyoBEEKMANTOWN — Lawrence W. Gonyo, 87, of Route 22, Beekmantown, died July 19, 2003, at the Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in Rouses Point, surrounded by his family, Hospice of the North Country, and staff at the nursing facility. Mr. Gonyo is survived by his loving wife, Adrienne, whom he married on April 30, 1940; four children, Larry Gonyo and his wife, Beverly, of West Chazy; Ellen Cook Miles of Southwick, Mass. Joe Gonyo and his wife, Peggy, of Suffern; and Jim Gonyo and partner, Judy Paquette, of Beekmantown; eight grandchildren, Kevin Gonyo and his wife, Katie, of West Chazy; Karen Kain and her husband, Jeremy, of Plattsburgh; Dan Cook and his wife, Linda, of Westfield, Mass.; Todd Cook of Southwick, Mass.; Meghan Gonyo of Suffern; Carrie Gonyo of Chicago, Ill.; Jill Ward of New Haven, Conn.; and Janine Ward of San Diego, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren Gonyo of West Chazy, Jackson Kain of Plattsburgh, and Kayleigh Paradise of Westfield, Mass. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, James Miles, in December of 2002. Mr. Gonyo was born Dec. 20, 1915, in the Town of Chazy to the late Willard and Katherine (O’Neil) Gonyo. At the age of six months, he and his parents moved to the farm on Route 22 in Beekmantown, Beekman Lane Farm, where he resided until he entered the Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in the fall of 1998. A progressive dairy farmer, Mr. Gonyo incorporated traditional farming methods with current technologies to make farm work easier and more productive. Several years ago, Mr. Gonyo’s Beekman Lane Farm was recognized as a Dairy of Distinction. This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of dairy owners and operators who maintain attractive, well kept homesteads. To improve the lives of farm families and to encourage productivity, Mr. Gonyo served on many agricultural agencies. For 34 years, he was a member and chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee (ASCS). During this time, he assisted hundreds of farmers in the Champlain Valley with federal farm programs. Mr. Gonyo was also a member of the Farm Home Adminstration (FHA), an agency designed to assist farmers with loans for equipment, seed, land and buildings. Additionally, he was a director of the New York State Artificial Breeder’s Association. Mr. Gonyo was a civic-minded person who maintained an active interest in the community. For years he served as an elected official and showed his ongoing support of candidates seeking election. He served as a Town of Beekmantown councilman for 16 years and during his tenure participated in the planning and construction of an expanded town hall on Spellman Road. In 1994, Mr. Gonyo received the Democrat of the Year Award in recognition of his many years representing the Town of Beekmantown and Clinton County as a Democratic Committee person. In 1998, he and his family hosted the Democratic candidate for the governor of New York at his residence. Mr. Gonyo also served on the Assessment Board of Appeals. The Gonyo family donated the land for the Beekmantown Senior Citizens Housing Project located on O’Neil Road, of which Mr. Gonyo was an original director. It is named in honor of Lawrence and Adrienne Gonyo. In 2001 he was recognized by the local Lion’s Club and was awarded the Lauren Hobbs’ Citizenship Award for his many years of service to the community. Mr. Gonyo was a life-long member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church of West Chazy. He served on the Church Council and was an active participant in the fund-raising project for the current church’s construction and numerous Bishop Fund campaigns. In 1998, Mr. Gonyo and his family hosted a visit by the bishop of Ogdensburg to discuss the effects of the ice storm on affected farms. Calling hours for family and friends will be at the Walker Funeral Home, Court Street, Plattsburgh, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church in West Chazy 11 a.m. Tuesday with internment at the family plot at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Chazy. A reception will follow at St. Joseph’s Church Hall. Donations in Mr. Lawrence Gonyo’s memory cam be made to Hospice of the North Country, 386 Rugar St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901, or the St. Joseph’s Building Fund. Sherlene M. BoyeaMORIAH — Sherlene M. Boyea, 50, of 167 Furnace Road, Moriah, died peacefully at home with her family after a long illness, on Saturday, July 19, 2003. She was born Jan. 12, 1953, the daughter of Carl and Lillian Perry. Sherl is survived by her husband of 32 years, Jim, and three children: Jim Jr. of Moriah, Jennifer of Ballston Lake, and John of Troy; her dog, Baby; thirteen brothers and sisters, Wanda and Ray Weston of Phelps, Bettie and the late Edwin Genier of Witherbee, Bert and Tracy Sprague of Mineville, Carlene and Mike Wojewodzic of Mineville, Ruthie and Bobby Simpson of Mineville, Rae and Mike Genier of Mineville, Donna and Don Sherman of Moriah, Chip and Barb Perry of Mineville, her twin, Sharlene, and the late Kim Joiner of Witherbee, Ricky and Joann Perry of Mineville, Darlene Perry of Port Henry, Dorene LaWare of Port Henry and Dennis Perry of Mineville; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from the Boyea family; step-brothers and step-sisters from the Dupuis and Rogers families and many nieces and nephews. She attended Moriah Central School. Before her illness, she worked at PreTech Plastics in Mineville where she enjoyed her job. She would often spend a lot of time with her family and friends, whether it would be shopping, in the pool, or just having coffee. She will be deeply missed by all. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of All Saints in Mineville with Msgr. John McAvoy officiating. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad. |
