James S. Boyd

Norwood, N.Y. — James S. Boyd, 63, of 5 Douglas Rd., Norwood, died Thursday evening, July 17, 2003.

He was born Oct. 18, 1939, in Plattsburgh, the son of Ralph and Dorothy (Sibley) Boyd.

He graduated from Peru Central School in 1957. He achieved his bachelor of science degree at Plattsburgh State and his master of science at Potsdam State University. He married Bonnie Stewart at Hilltop Methodist Church in Seaside, Calif., on Feb. 24, 1968.

He was a teacher at Massena Central from 1963 to 1967, McFarland Elementary School, McFarland, Calif., from 1967 to 1968 and Potsdam Central School from 1969 to 1994, when he retired. He coached wrestling and soccer at Potsdam Central. He was also a soccer and lacrosse official for both the Northern N.Y. Soccer Association and the NCAA.

He was member of the Potsdam Country Club, Beeham Game Club, South Colton, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 2074, Potsdam, N.Y., State Retired Teachers Association and the First Presbyterian Church of Dailey Ridge.

He enjoyed golf very much, along with hunting, gardening, woodworking, kayaking and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife Bonnie of Norwood; sons Andrew M. and Elizabeth C. of Norwood, Mark S. and Mandy M. of Norwood and James B. of Duluth, Minn.; daughter Beth and Mark Erdmann of Widefield, Colo.; a niece/ daughter and her fiancé, Shannon K. Boyd and Matthew R. Bartholomew; a brother, Robert R. of Dunedin, Fla.; one grandson; two granddaughters; two nephews; one niece; and two grandnieces.

Calling hours will be held at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Potsdam Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mike P. Catanzaro presiding. Burial will be held in the Dailey Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Dailey Ridge, 411 Elliot Rd., Norwood, NY 13668, Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley and the Elks Lodge of Potsdam.

Linda Phillips Penfield

Piscataway, N.J. — Linda Phillips Penfield, 60, of Piscataway, N.J., died on July 18, 2003, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, N.J.

She was born in Hastings, Neb., the daughter of Clifford and Jeanne Phillips, both deceased.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Phillips.

Linda is survived by her husband, Douglas; a son, Adam of Piscataway, N.J.; two stepsons, Randall of Ocoee, Fla., and Derek of Santa Monica, Calif.; a brother, John Phillips of Raymond, Neb.; and a sister, Kathe Cox, of Kearney, Neb.

Linda and her husband Doug spent summers at their camp on Lake Champlain at Point Au Fer.

She was a graduate of Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in music and of Manhattan School of Music with a master's degree in music.

Linda Phillips Penfield was an opera singer who performed leading roles with the St. Paul opera, the National Opera Company, the Syracuse Symphony, the Kansas City Lyric and the Opera Orchestra of New York. Some of her most famous roles include Susanna in "Marriage of Figaro", Norma in "Don Pasquale" and Rosina in "Barber of Seville." In addition, she sang concerts with the Florence Orchestra in Italy, contemporary concerts with the Dorian Quintet in Mexico and performed the American premiere of Benjamin Britten's "Death in Venice" with the Metropolitan Opera.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church in New Brunswick, N.J., on Sunday, July 27th, at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Rouses Point, N.Y., on July 29th at 10 a.m.

Lawrence W. Gonyo, 87, of Beekman Lane Farm, Route 22, Beekmantown, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Cedar Hedge Nursing Home in Rouses Point, N.Y.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1915, in Chazy, the son of Willard and Katherine (O’Neil) Gonyo.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time with the R.W. Walker Funeral Home.
