Melvin McWhinnie

CHAZY — Melvin E.J. "Mac" McWhinnie, 80, of Fisk Road, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Ormstown, Quebec, on July 24, 1922, the son of Edwin and Jessie (Todd) McWhinnie.

Mr. McWhinnie graduated from Chazy Central Rural School in 1940 and from Delhi University in 1943, then joined the Army and served as staff sergeant during World War II in the European Theatre.

Returning home, he married his high-school sweetheart, the former Esther C. Labare, at Chazy Methodist Church, in 1946.

Following the war, Mac worked with his father, building houses in the Chazy area, then, early in the 1950s, he and his father started E.C. McWhinnie & Son Lumber and Building Materials. Mac operated the firm with his wife and son for more than 40 years, retiring in 1993.

Mac was a longtime elder and trustee of the Chazy Presbyterian Church, a volunteer fireman and chairman of the Chazy Board of Fire Commissioners for more than 50 years; member, past commander and chaplain of American Legion Post #769; member of VFW Post 1418, Chazy Chamber of Commerce "Citizen of the Year" in 1973 and Northern Tier Chamber of Commerce "Citizen of the Year" in 1996, past President of Riverview Cemetery Association for more than 30 years, Chazy Central Rural School "Alumnus of the Year" in 1987 and a Master Mason of the Northern Lights Lodge #505 for more than 55 years.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; one son, James McWhinnie of Chazy; one daughter, Mary Faye Pratt of Chazy; one sister, Violet Cassidy of Montreal and one grandson, Todd Pratt of Chazy.

A brother, Merrill McWhinnie, died in 1945.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

A funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Chazy Presbyterian Church followed by burial at Riverview Cemetery.

Donations in his memory may be made to Chazy Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

Raymond H. Tavernier

DANNEMORA — Raymond H. Tavernier, 72, of Route 374, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at his home.

He was born in Churubusco on Dec. 25, 1930, son of the late Henry G. and Yvonne (Gagnier) Tavernier.

Raymond was a graduate of Dannemora High School. He had been a corrections officer for more than 37 years, retiring from Clinton Correctional Facility. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Raymond belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8793 in Ellenburg, treasurer and member of Lot 32 Hunting Club, Inc., and was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed four-wheeling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 37 years, Genevieve L. (Miller) Tavernier of Dannemora; a daughter, Amy Doherty of Dannemora; two grand-daughters, Krystin and Alyssa of Dannemora; a brother, Frances Tavernier of Plattsburgh; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Tavernier, Merilda Wallace and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Raymond was predeceased by a son, Christopher Tavernier and two brothers, Lawrence Tavernier and Gerald Tavernier.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday from St. Joseph’s Church in Dannemora. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Fred Jackson

PLATTSBURGH — Fred "Freddy" Jackson, 36, of 11 Alexis Lane, was born in Stafford Springs, Conn., on April 4, 1967, and died July 4, 2003, in Plattsburgh.

He was the only son of Fred and Arlene (Barcomb) Jackson II, also of 11 Alexis Lane. He attended Beekmantown Central School and was a carpet installer by trade. He was an avid fisherman and will always be remembered by his gift to make you laugh.

Freddy is survived by his maternal grandmother, Clayda Cote of Plattsburgh and his paternal grandfather, Fred M. Jackson of Waterviliet. Also surviving are several loving aunts and uncles and their children, Jan and Dan Fullington of Milton, Vt., Eunice and Jim LeClair of Churubusco, Gail Clark of Malone, Francis and Joy Barcomb of Cadyville, and Cleo and Roxie Jackson and Paula Jackson of Schenectady, and Chauncey Flemings of California.

Freddy was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Francis J. Barcomb Sr., and paternal grandmother, Margaret Flemings.

He will also be greatly missed by the family pet ... Misty.

Calling hours will be at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. only.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joseph Wheelock of St. Edmund’s Church, Ellenburg, officiating.

After the services the family will be receiving guests at 173 Looby Road in Churubusco.

DEATH NOTICES

MARY A. MATOTT, 91, of the Point Au Roche Road and formerly of Altona, died Saturday, July 5, 2003.

She was born in Champlain on Feb. 14, 1912, the daughter of John and Lillian (Mesec) Bellrose.

CAROLINE F. GREGOROVIUS, 90, of the Vilas Home and formerly of Oak Street, died Saturday at the CVPH Medical Center.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., on March 16, 1913, the daughter of Louis and Frances (Baker) Bigelow.
