Patrick C. Murphy

Redford — Patrick C. Murphy, 67, of Clinton Street, Redford, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his home surrounded by his loving family and Hospice of the North Country.

He was born in Plattsburgh, March 24, 1936, the son of late John J. and Mary (Clark) Murphy.

He graduated from AuSable Forks High School in 1954. He served in the United States Army in Korea from 1959 to 1960.

Patrick married the former Gracelyn Smith, Sept. 22, 1962, at St. Brendan's Church in Keene.

He was employed at J.J. Rogers for several years. He had worked in corrections from 1965 to 1995 retiring as a sergeant. He worked at several facilities including Green Haven, Ogdensburg, Adirondack and Lyon Mountain.

He served as Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus in AuSable Forks and was also a member of the Saranac Fire Department for several years.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years Gracelyn Murphy of Redford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patti-Lyn and A.J. Allen of Rochester, Colleen "Cam" and George Brown of Ticonderoga; one son and daughter-in-law, Shawn P. and Brenda Murphy of Peru; four grandchildren, Brianna and Devin Allen, and Alyssa and Kyle Murphy; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John J. and Marlene Murphy of Plattsburgh, Tom and Dori Murphy of AuSable Forks and Michael and Joan Murphy of Plattsburgh; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Clark Everleth of Plattsburgh, Maureen and David E. Mize of Georgia and Ann and Donald Strong of Plattsburgh; one sister-in-law, Veronica Murphy of Plattsburgh; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Charles Murphy; and his nephew and godson Dale Murphy.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Church in AuSable Forks with Rev. Philip Allen, pastor, celebrating and Fr. Francis Coryer, pastor of the Assumption of Mary Church in Redford, concelebrating. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery in Keene. A reception with light refreshments will follow at the Keene Community Center in Keene.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of the North Country, Saranac Fire Department, or the FitzPatrick Cancer Center in Plattsburgh.

Dorothy J. Long

Daytona Beach, FLA. — Mrs. Dorothy J. Long, 84, of Daytona Beach, Fla., and formerly of Cadyville, N.Y., passed away

Monday, June 30, 2003, at her home under the gentle care of her family.

She was born in Cadyville, N.Y., on July 20, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Belina (Rabideau) St. John.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 1619 Auxiliary in West Plattsburgh, N.Y., the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125 Auxiliary in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1590 Auxiliary in Daytona Beach,

Fla., the Daytona Beach Florida Women of the Moose Lodge 1019, Elk Heart of the Elks Lodge 2723, Port Orange, Fla., and Eagles Auxiliary 4033 of Holly Hill, Fla.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert C. Long on Jan. 15, 2003; her parents, Charles and Belina St. John;

brothers, George St. John, Herbert St. John, Fred St. John; a sister, Vina Reil; and three grandsons, David LaVarnway, Ricky LaVarnway and Thomas Millea.

She is survived by her nine children and their life partners, George and Mitsuko LaVarnway of Appling, Ga., Dennis and Patricia LaVarnway of Morrisonville, N.Y., Linda Penders and David June of Kissimmee, Fla., Richard LaVarnway of Ormond Beach, Fla., William and Gloria Long of Albuquerque, N.M., Yvonne and Lamont Smith of Richfield Springs, N.Y., Robert Long of Schenectady, N.Y., Roger and Darlene Long of Peru, N.Y., Marjorie and Ray Heatherton of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive her.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Park Row, Cadyville, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. James Minor Church in Cadyville, N.Y. Interment will follow in the Cadyville Protestant Cemetery, Cadyville, N.Y.

Lucy Mae Hogle

Bloomingdale — Lucy Mae Hogle, age 86, formerly of Bloomingdale, N.Y., died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Born in Bloomingdale, N.Y. on Jan. 31, 1917, she was the daughter of A.P. and Emily (Schairer/Strobel) Smith.

She married Alan Hogle Dec. 25, 1941, in Constableville, N.Y. Mr. Hogle predeceased her in December 2002, they had been married nearly 61 years!

Mrs. Hogle attended and graduated from Bloomingdale High School in 1935. She later attended and graduated form Plattsburgh Normal School in 1938 and later received her Bachelor' of Sciences Degree in Elementary Education, from Plattsburgh State University in 1955. Mrs. Hogle taught school in various schools including teaching at Vermontville School from 1938 to 1941, Keeses Mills 1952 to 1955, Saranac Lake Jr. High 1955 to 1958, Shenendehowa Central School, Clifton Park, N.Y. 1966 to 1967 and Ithaca Elementary School 1968 to 1970. Mrs. Hogle sponsored several student teachers at both the Saranac Lake and Shenendehowa Schools.

Mrs. Hogle and her husband lived in Bloomingdale (in the house where she was born) until 1959. Due to Mr. Hogle's employment with the New York State Electric and Gas, they moved to Plattsburgh, later transferring to Clifton Park and then to the Ithaca area until Mr. Hogle's retirement in 1981. After retirement, they returned to the Adirondacks and resided in Lake Clear until last year. Due to serious illness, Mrs. Hogle became a resident at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh in August 2002. Mrs. Hogle was an avid gardener and painter and, in recent years, had taken a great interest in local Adirondack history.

Her father, AP Smith, established Smith's Grocery & Feed Store in Bloomingdale in the late 1800's. After the death of her parents, Mom, along with her sister, Edith Strobel Baker (now deceased) ran the business from 1944 until the Store closed in 1950. Mrs. Hogle family has many fond memories of "penny" candy, store-bought cookies sold in bulk and of their Mom driving the truck to Saranac Lake to pick up coal!

Mrs. Hogle is survived by her daughter, Betty Jackson of New Rochelle, N.Y.; grandsons, Christopher of Briarwood, N.Y., and Jeffrey of Paris, Maine; her niece, Patricia Stephenson of Bloomingdale; and nephew, Erwin (Joe) Strobel Jr. of Victor, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Inc. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Friends wishing to remember Lucy Mae Hogle may make memorial contributions to Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or Meadow Brook Healthcare in care of the funeral home.

Barbara E. Golovach Martin

Tucson, Ariz. — Barbara E. Golovach Martin, 55, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Lyon Mountain, N.Y., and North Wilkesboro, N.C., passed away Thursday, June 26, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on May 23, 1948, daughter of Anthony and Loretta (Robinson) Golovach.

She married Harold R. Martin on Sept. 27, 1969, in Lyon Mountain, N.Y.

Barbara was a graduate of Lyon Mountain High School. She worked for a large retail store in North Wilkesboro, N.C., and transferred to Tucson, Ariz., were she retired to enjoy more time with her family and friends.

Barbara enjoyed writing poetry and drawing intricate illustrations. She always remembered birthdays, holidays, anniversaries and any special day or event. She always kept in close contact with family and friends with her animated letter writing and humorous phone calls. She had a great sense of humor and infectious laugh. She brought a smile and a chuckle to everyone she encountered.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Harold R. Martin and her father, Anthony Golovach.

She is survived by her mother, Loretta Golovach of Lyon Mountain, N.Y.; her three sons, Erick K. Martin, Israel A. Martin and Travis G. Martin, all of Tucson, Ariz.; five brothers, Anthony and Carol Golovach of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Robert and Elise Golovach of Cadyville, N.Y., James and Patricia Golovach of Lyon Mountain, N.Y., Michael and Mary Golovach of Williston, Vt., John and Susan Golovach of Lyon Mountain, N.Y.; two sisters, Priscilla and Edward Siskavich and Anita Golovach, both of Lyon Mountain, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and former coworker, Penny Schnider of Tuscon, Ariz.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Evergreen Mortuary in Tucson, Ariz. The service was officiated by Father Joseph Saba, chaplain at St. Mary's Hospital. Readings were done by her brother-in-law, Edward Siskavich. Interment will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Lyon Mountain, NY at the convenience of her family at a later date.

Arrangements were made by Evergreen Mortuary in Tucson, Ariz.

She will be dearly missed.

Aileen G. Newell

CROWN POINT — Aileen G. Newell, 90, of Crown Point, N.Y., passed away on July 1, 2003.

She was born on Oct. 9, 1912, in Mineville, N.Y., the daughter of the late John and Mary Grogan.

Aileen graduated from Mineville High School and Plattsburgh State College. She taught at Moriah school for four years and at Crown Point Elementary for 27 years. She enjoyed walking, swimming, golfing, traveling and she bowled on the same team for 40 years.

Her survivors include Jack and Joan Newell of Fort Edward, Patricia Justice of Colonie, Richard and Edna Newell of Whitehall, and Alan and Jill Newell of Fort Edward; one sister, Eleanor McKenzie of North Hudson; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Aileen was the widow of George A. Newell, who passed away on Feb. 2, 2001. She was also predeceased by two brothers, John and Mark Grogan, and one sister, Yvonne Michalak.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 3, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home, Port Henry. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Crown Point, with burial to follow at the White Church Cemetery, Crown Point.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crown Point Rescue Squad.

Rev. Dr. James R. Mapstone

Plattsburgh — Rev. Dr. James R. Mapstone

Rev. Dr. James R. Mapstone was born in Uniontown, Pa.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Ruth Mapstone; and his brother, Gary.

Jim graduated from Penn State and went on to gain a Divinity Degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Upon graduation he served the Churches of Summerville and Hawthorn in western Pennsylvania for three years. Expanding on his involvement in the Presbyterian Church Jim went back to Penn State for an Masters of Science Science in Rural Sociology and then gained his Ph.D. from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. Jim stayed very active at the Presbytery level, working on committees for "Small Church Concerns" and "The Self Development of People".

Jim's teaching career began in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, then to Bowling Green, Ohio. In 1970 he joined the faculty of the Sociology Department at Plattsburgh State University College where he a was very involved member of the department and of the university, serving on the Senate for a number of years.

Jim loved to teach and preach and these he did with great dedication. He also applied the same dedication to his enjoyment of running, swimming and cycling, but especially running. He was seen running on hot days and on cold days with icicles hanging from his beard. He ran many local races and some marathons. He was very sad when his Parkinson's disease brought this part of his life to an end. But above all Jim was a family man, he loved his wife and children and seven grandchildren. He bequeathed memories of fun and laughter, jokes and puns. He had a great love of travel, anywhere! Anytime!; he was also an avid movie goer and even at the end of his life remembered who was in what movie.

Jim loved life and embraced death. He had a rock solid faith in the love of God.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his sister, Sara Jean and her friend, Georgiana of Erie, Pa.; and his aunt, Jean Yanow of Keisterville, Pa.; his three daughters, Kathryn and Lisa Schoewater of Sudbury, Mass., Elizabeth and Frank Hagelberg of Jackson, Miss., and their children, Ellen, Julia, Philip, Jennifer and Eric Gessner of Manchester, N.H. and their children, Matthew, Lukas, Zachary and Joshua; his son, Jonathon and Wendy Mapstone of Guilderland, N.Y.

There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church on Brinkerhoff Street on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003 at 11 a.m.

Donations in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Building Fund, First Presbyterian Memorial Fund, Hospice of the North Country or in memory of Dr. James R. Mapstone.
